How Far Away Were We from a SB in 2014?

According to PFF we were only 8 above average players away from contending? Do you agree?

PFF examined the 28 teams that played in conference championship games from 2007-13, and found that 40 percent of those rosters, on average, comprised what PFF deemed to be good or elite players.

So here's the question PFF tried to answer: How many above-average players stood between every NFL team and contending for this season's Super Bowl?

This isn't gospel, but PFF believes the Jets were eight players away. That ranks 14th-fewest in the NFL, out of 30 teams, because the Super Bowl participants were not included.

PFF's top five were the Cowboys, Ravens, Broncos, Packers and Eagles. The Cowboys were zero above-average players away from contending for a Super Bowl spot, according to PFF. They bowed out in the divisional round at the Packers.

So the Jets are right there in the middle of the pack.

According to PFF, the Jets this season had two elite players (center Nick Mangold and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson); four good players (defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, safety Dawan Landry, rush outside linebacker Jason Babin and nose tackle Damon Harrison); 19 average players; and eight bad players.

Those bad players were: safety/cornerback Antonio Allen, left guard Brian Winters (who played just six games before hurting his knee), running back Chris Johnson, right guard Willie Colon, quarterback Geno Smith, quarterback Michael Vick, wide receiver David Nelson (who played in six games before getting cut) and tight end Jeff Cumberland.

It's never a good thing when your two quarterbacks, Smith and Vick in this case, are listed among the worst players on your team.

So do you agree or disagree with the assertion that the Jets aren't incredibly far away from being a successful team? Leave your thoughts in the comments section down below.

Well, we are pretty damn far from a SB in 2014. As our 4-12 record indicates. My crystal ball says we turn it around in 2015 and make the playoffs. 2016 , We make that push back to the AFC Title game.

But, with that said, 8 of our losses was by only 48 points. The difference in being 12-4 as to 4-12. That is 6 points per game on average. If we could score 1 more touchdown per game and give up 3 less points per game, you never know

as long as you have no QB you might as well be 53 players away.

You just need a QB that isn't going to turn the ball over. There are just not many of them around but I think Russell Wilson was that last year.

Seems like a fair analysis. 8 above average players or 1 elite QB however you want to measure it.

Agree

A good QB, and somebody who can play CB, and the Jets are in at least the chase for a playoff spot. I've said it before this team isn't as terrible as the 4-12 record. The few games that Smith didn't play for the opposition, the Jets' won, or contended in.

Wasn't many acceptable games by Smith

Franchise QB or not with the 2014 team, the Jets would have not made the playoffs. I would have given them 8-9 games at most which would not have been playoff worthy. The secondary was God awful, o-line issues and WR was still a major issue. If Harvin would have been acquired during the off-season with a franchise QB that we don't have, I would say 8-9 game win season. If the Harvin trade happened the same way it really did, then I say 6-7 games. Overall, there are or WERE more issues with the 2014 team then just the QB. The coaching staff, scouting and GM were garbage beyond reason. They didn't have the team prepared enough by their off-season moves or non-moves and their season game preparation and time management was just as bad. That right there would have cost us the other 2-3 games to make our team a 10-11 win team and playoff and SB worthy. The Jets in 2014 WERE doomed under Rex, Idzik and Bradway regardless and I couldn't be happier that they are gone. Lets go new regime, LET'S GO!!! J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets
