Jets GM John Idzik involved in early stages of coaching search
December 14, 2014 9:00 am ET

Beleaguered Jets general manager John Idzik, who has been at the center of fan and media scorn in just his second season on the job, has been helping craft the preparations for the franchise's ensuing coaching search along with owner Woody Johnson, league sources said, at a time when many have wondered if the GM would be back himself.

Some sources cautioned that Johnson could still perhaps opt to hire a new general manager as well, especially should he pursue an A-List coach who might want his own personnel executive, but it surprised some around the league to learn that Idzik has been involved in the pre-vetting stages of the search. It's widely known that Jets coach Rex Ryan will not be back in 2015 -- he could well end up choosing broadcasting over a return to coaching next season, sources said -- and, with a the competition for coaching candidates expected to be heavy, Johnson and Idzik are preparing lists and sniffing around on certain potential candidates.

To this point the franchise is not using a headhunter or search firm -- Johnson has in the past -- and while that could change at some point, for now it has been Johnson, Idzik and team president Neil Glat who have been handling the behind-the-scenes stuff. Idzik has some natural ties to both of the Seattle Seahawks coordinators -- Darrell Bevell and Dan Quinn, who have interviewed for head coaching jobs, and whom he worked with in Seattle. And Idzik has also thought highly of 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman in the past, though the descent of San Francisco's offense this season would seemingly put a dimmer on his coaching star.

The Jets have been a dysfunctional franchise, which would certainly scare some candidates away, but the glare of the Big Apple, a high 2015 draft pick (perhaps even the No. 1 overall) and the high-profile nature of this job will appeal to others.

This is pretty bad news and unexpected. Doesn't seem like he'll be on the way out. I have no confidence in Idzik to make good decisions.

i have a feeling idzick will get another chance. I am more wanting a HC change then a GM change anyway although if we did it would be no bother. I want to hear that a new scouting dept is being hired.

Jets hire ex-Cards GM Rod Graves

The New York Jets, continuing to restructure their front office under new general manager John Idzik, hired former Arizona Cardinals GM Rod Graves Monday as the senior director of football administration.

It will be a role reversal for Graves, who served as Idzik's boss in Arizona from 2004 to 2007. The two remained close, and it was reported a month ago that Idzik was targeting Graves for a position. They met as ball boys for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Graves was fired this offseason by the Cardinals after a 5-11 season, their third straight year out of the playoffs. He spent 16 years with the organization, the last nine in charge of the football operation. He had one year remaining on his contract.

Graves has a scouting background, so he should be a good complement to Idzik, who came up through the ranks primarily as a contract negotiator and cap expert.

Since replacing Mike Tannenbaum, who was fired after the season, Idzik has overhauled the front office, the scouting department and the roster.

The Jets parted ways with three executives, including assistant general manager Scott Cohen. Graves will step into the role of second in command.

The Jets also announced the hiring of Matt Bazirgan as the assistant director of pro personnel. Previously, he was an area scout. Rick Courtright was named the national college scout.

Idzik also had to replace four college scouts, two of whom were let go. He named four new scouts, including former Jets and Houston Texans cornerback Aaron Glenn, who spent last season with the Jets as a pro scout. The other new scouts are David Boller, David Hinson and Christopher Prescott.

Of Tannenbaum's closest advisers, only three survived the front-office shakeup, including former GM and current senior personnel executive Terry Bradway.

Although I know it's not popular, you can make an argument to keep Idzik:

He took over a bad team in cap hell;
With the cap rollover & and the cap rising next season, the Jets will be about $40M under the cap.
Idzik never had the opportunity to hire his own HC.
My opinion is Woody is more culpable then Idzik for the mess we are in, because he forced the HC on the new GM.

With the exception of Ivory and Richardson, Idzik's personnel decisions have been horrific. The cap cuts were obvious. They were heavily debated on the boards, and almost all of them were agreed upon by posters. The only one that was heavily debated was Revis, and he was available at the beginning of the season for 12 million. Idzik passed. Felt he had a very strong secondary.

The GM's main job is giving the HC good players. Idzik has failed at that from top to bottom. Book keepers are a dime a dozen, to rebuild, a team needs good young players.

If Idzik stays it will set back the Jets for years.

IMO, the receiving position is better also with Decker and Harvin. I also think Amaro will prove to be a quality TE.

but the hc has to ask for the players he wants also..........a GM's main job is to agree with on the a roster and then get the players the coache's wants....rex in his arrogance thinks he can make the powderpuff girls into a dominating defense.

I guarantee you if Rex had anything to say about it Revis and Cromartie would still be on the Jets

I'm hoping it is a situation where woody is just using him because he has to pay him at this point.

This is the worst the Jets have been since Rich Kotite. The sad thing is, there is no Bill Parcells riding into town to right the ship. It's going to get worst if the rumors of Idzik being retained are true.

Idzik right now is the most hated Jets leader since, well I don't know, I can't remember anyone more loathed. Joe Walton?

He is the absolute definition of a lame duck GM. The fans are going to get totally apathetic, give up seats, have an empty, or hostile stadium. Then get fired next year.

What quality HC candidate is going to want to come here under those conditions? It appears there are going to be several HC changes in the league next year, any good HC candidate is going to have several offers. If Idzik is fired after the 2015 season, what happens to the HC? Is he retained, and forced on the next GM? Isn't that the definition of insanity? Doing the exact same thing over again and expecting a different outcome? What GM is going to want to come here in 2015 under those circumstances?

The one ray of hope I had after this pitiful season was that the entire thing was going to be burnt down. New GM, New HC, new young promising QB. The win yesterday, in one of the most ugly games I have ever watched, sets up this scenario. Geno Smith once again having a make believe competition with a has been/never was aging QB, to see if they can win the 1st pick in the 2016 draft, to select who ever is the hot QB, and get Idzik fired.

Oh joy, this is something to look forward to

This team is saving me a ton of money. They won't be watchable for years!!

Were the 1-15 Jets in 1996 watchable no but the 1997 Jets were.As were the 2008 Fins after going 1-15 the year before.. However if your a charter member of the Chicken Little brigade I understand..:waving-white-flag:
