DE/LB Takkarist McKinley of UCLA had a meeting with Jets LB Coach Kevin Greene, McKinley was in a sling recovering from shoulder surgery and didn't partake in any events/drills at his Pro Day... Expect McKinley to be on the Jets draft board as a late 1st early 2nd round options...
CB Obi Melifonwu of UConn met and was worked out by two Jets personnel in DC Kacy Rodgers and CB Dennard Wilson... After a strong combine Obi boosted his stock from a mid-high second to talk of being a late first round selection... Obi is one of those longer, lengthy cover corners to matchup against those bigger receivers...
LB T.J. Watt from Wisconsin also worked out of Jets LB Coach Kevin Greene is widely considered a top second round prospect with ability that could get him drafted in the back end of the first round... Watt the younger brother of J.J. Watt from the Houston Texans is actually considered more athletic then his older brother... Some may actually say he has a high shelf than J.J.,
CB Chidobe Awuzie of Colorado was worked out by DC Kacy Rodgers... Awuzie has the experience and athleticism to start day one... He has exceptional closing speed to recover on a miss step which he rarely makes, his high football IQ allows him to dissect when or if to make a play on the ball without losing containment on his receiver...
ILB Raekwon McMillan from Ohio State worked out by Mike Caldwell our Ass. HC - Inside LB coach... McMillan is considered a high second round selection and arguably the second best inside linebacker behind Reuben Foster...
Oddly enough so far the Jets aren't noted in working out or having any significant interviews with first round talent in these positions: OL, RB, WR, DL which could exclude the majority of the prospects on the board and probably stir up a lot of discussions... Looking at the roster, we filled a few needs in free agency like Kelvin Beachum at left tackle, re-signing backup Ijalana... Bringing in Claiborne at corner gives the team flexibility at these positions... Not the sexiest of moves but they were important to the development of this team's future...
The above five prospects were noted very high on the Jets stock board... Of the five McKinley Melifonwu are probably the best of the bunch but one can debate that all five would be a big improvement overall between the three positions they represent... Everyone has been down on last year's first round Darron Lee, but adding McMillan whom already shows NFL-caliber strength, taking on and shedding opponents efficiently with active, powerful hands, lateral agility and balance. He is a powerful tackler, often stopping ball-carriers dead in their tracks, letting him work behind a veteran like David Harris for one season could give us a dynamic young duo for years...
Yes, Kacy Rodgers was at Colorado's Pro Day the real sleeper prospect that he was there to see wasn't CB Awuzie even tho he worked him out and Chidobe impressed, NT Josh Tupou who is about the same size and strength of our own Deon Simon was the prospect on tap that Rodgers was there to see... Tupou showed his versatility of playing multiple positions on the defensive line...
Have to expect even though Edge Rusher like McKinley would be an upgrade, a player like T.J. Watt may slip to our second round selection being that edge rusher is one of our biggest needs for a decade now and counting... Both Obi & Chidobe would be immediate upgrades but in fact this draft is really deep at this position is not imperative that leaves the inside backer in McMillan as the best possibility if we trade down...
