I'm Getting Defensive

With all of the gloom and doom predictions for the 2017 Jets I believe there are a number of things to look forward to. And they're all on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive Line
Leonard will be the best player on the field most Sundays. Period. IF we are to believe Wilkerson, he is once again healthy and out to prove last year was not the real thing. Fair enough. IF Sheldon has an once of common sense, he's going to stay out of trouble, stay in team meetings and will take advantage of Leo's double teaming and register double digit sacks and TFL. Mclendon, Simon and hopefully Pennel will be picking up the loose scraps the other guys will leave behind. This group could be fun to watch. Of course, we thought that last year. And the year before that. And the year...

Linebackers
The guy who benefited the most from the Adams/Maye selections is Darren Lee. He had zero help behind him last year and that will change drastically in '17. With that help Lee will be able to use his speed and take a big step forward this year a la Deone Buchanan. Jordan Jenkins will be the next David Harris, a solid contributor and leader year in and year out. No idea what will happen with Mauldin given his arrest. I'm not buying in to the Dylan Donohue hype just yet. His story reads like training camp fodder until proven otherwise. This group will not be the strength of the defense but there's enough here to hide most of the weaknesses. Also, I would not be surprised if Mac finds a one year starter when teams start paring their rosters.

Secondary
Here's where it gets interesting. Was the lack of success of last year's secondary a result of the poor penetration and pressure from the defensive line or the other way around? Either way, the corners should be MUCH better this year, especially IF Claiborne can stay healthy. If he does miss games, it will be very interesting to see the disparity in passing yards allowed with/without him in the lineup. What I'm excited about most is to see how much of a difference a stud CB will have on this team. It could be a total game changer which would make Mac focus on that with the $90mm he'll have to spend next off-season. On the other side should be Burris who is another key in the development of this defense. Skrine should not be seen anywhere near the outside and should stay in the slot. Would love to have Williams take over the slot by year end so we can move on from Skrine. I think the safeties will change the entire defense for the better. That likely won't be complete until mid-season but it should happen.

The record may be something to forget this year, but there are many things to prove, not the least of which is to see if Bowles has the chops to move the pieces around to create his opus magnum defense.

The greatest quarterback in football history never completed a pass from a prone position.
They have to be able to do that consistently. Pressures are nice, but they can be like kissing your sister if the ball has already been thrown.

The linebackers will be terrible. First of all, Mac has spent two seasons trying to unfuck the linebackers. He drafted 3 linebackers and acquired a few more via FA. All to essentially ZERO results. Lorenzo was supposed to take a huge leap forward. Instead, you hardly ever heard his name mentioned and now he's more interested in punching guys that spill champagne on him. Jordan Jenkins was terrible in his rookie season and Darron Lee lacks the size necessary to play the role Toilet has planned out for him. Lee was horrible in every measured statistic from last season. He's also going to probably have to walk the plank with Roger Goodell for trying to beat the shit out of girlfriend. Honestly, even though he didn't hit her, he'll probably still have to serve a suspension?

Add to that Toilet has been exposed as a horrendously BAD coach. He was downright inferior to most every HC he played last season. Add to that David Harris was cut and even last season, well into his twilight playing years, he was still the best linebacker the Jets had.

Really, no amount of help in front or behind this incompetent group will make them look presentable.

Hell, Demario Davis was never resigned because he got beat like a rented mule on the wheel route. So after one season away, now they suddenly wanted him back? I feel compelled to say Mac has no idea how to pick linebackers and Toilet has no idea how to coach them.

I mean how many Jets fans screamed at the top of their lungs that Sheldon Richardson playing linebacker was a terrible misallocation? Yet Toilet trotted him out there every game.

Beautifully said MJ. Of course I hope you're wrong AND I hope you're a big enough man to say you hope you're wrong.

We shall see.

I live in Dallas and until last year he was considered a complete bust. He was better than what we have, but I wouldn't call him elite. If he plays to potential, then maybe he can be, but I doubt it.

He played in 15 games in his rookie season and he was very good. I don't care if that's called elite or almost elite or elite adjacent or whatever but I do know he wasn't a bust when he was on the field. If he stays on the field, he will be a drastic improvement over the last few years.

I will agree with that.

I understand that most of the pieces coming out now are fluff but it's pretty encouraging to hear about Jamal Adams. The guy is uber talented, smart and a is a leader, something this defense hasn't in a long, long time (Joe Klecko?). David Harris was smart and a leader but had limited physical ability. Revis was smart and uber talented but the only leading he did was with his agents. Klecko made that defensive line better and in fact improved the entire defense. That's the kind of impact Adams can have.

Last year's debacle was in part because we had 11 individuals out there on defense and every week teams exploited them. The only thing Pryor was interested in was finding someone to hit just when they went out of bounds for another 15 yard penalty. I sit in the 12th row from the field and I was closer to the receivers Revis was covering than Revis was. I have no idea what Gilchrist was doing out there. Sheldon was looking to clock Marshall more than he was looking to flatten Brady. Skrine was in way over his skis on the outside. Lee had zero help behind him and that was constantly being exploited. By his own admission Kacy Rogers doesn't know why Burris didn't play more last year. Mo was presumably hurt and apparently didn't have enough cash to buy a backup alarm clock. Mo and Sheldon growing up will make the second biggest difference on this defense. And hopefully Bowles has been mentored by his ex coach Parcells who told him he needs to stop being buddies with his guys and act like the damn coach. The third biggest IF on this team.

This is really a great post and one I wholeheartedly agree with. Adams appears to be a born leader and a guy Mac can build the team around?

I'm also curious to see if and how Leo steps us as a leader. It would be great for him to lead Wilkerson and Sheldon not only on the field but off of it as well. I suspect Marcus Maye will be a very positive influence on this team. All of the Florida cornerbacks drafted this year raved about Maye's leadership. I was expecting Mac to take either Quincy Wilson (one of the corners who raved about Maye) or Awuzie in round 2 but he took Maye instead. That tells me they really like Burris. The secondary was sickening to watch last year and I suspect it will be greatly improved. That could make it fun to watch this defense. I'm planning on binge watching Two and A Half Men (Charle Sheen episodes only) when the Jets have the ball.

Based on Williams actions in keeping Lee in check at that party, you would think Williams has some leadership qualities? He's also the kind of guy that can lead by example, he's very talented and still on the rise IMO...
