I'm sure it's just rumor or speculation but I heard something today about Winston to the Jets?

It's been reported that the Owners don't like Winston because they value image and character. The beat reporter who broke this has a solid history. Who knows if this will mean anything come April 30, but it sure makes things interesting
Again, this report suggests they found something troubling about Winston.

The question is, WHAT, is it something anyone would find troubling, or are they just being ultra conservative and careful?

I don't know the answer, but if Tampa soured on him and he's suddenly falling to 6, we better find out why.

Hallelujah...... someone who sees it. I have been saying since Feb that I dont believe Wilkerson will be with us after the draft. Now while I dont agree with this, it makes sense that MacBowles have put him off this long when the obvious was to extend him asap. I fully believe Wilk is trade bait in this draft. Tennessee could use a Dlineman and perhaps it was fodder to move up to 2 . I dont believe Wilk and our 1 this year gets you Tampa's pick. I think teams are really looking at the washington trade fiasco with RG3 .... and saying no way

Are you nuts! Wilkerson and our first round (#6) to move up four spots If we franchise him next seasom his value alone becomes two first round picks.
If Tennessee does not want him at # 2, ...Jacksonville, Oakland and Washington are not in the market for a new QB so he falls to us at # 6 anyway ... so by your logic we will be willing to give away our best player, when we don't have to.

I'm generally in agreement, dreamer.

Its no secret that I've never been a fan of Winston's to begin with, never really loved either QB, though I was warming to the idea of Mariota, but I can't get excited about Winston, there's just something about this kid that rubs me the wrong way, he strikes me as a bit of a con man and a lot more arrogant than he has any right to be. I have a bad gut feeling about this kid. I think he's gonna get the big money and implode. I could be wrong, but thats my gut.

That said, if we take him I'll root for him, give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that I'm wrong, but I wouldn't draft him and I'm not gonna lie, I was glad when it seemed like he was a lock to Tampa, now I'm worried that he might fall to 6, but I just wanna go on record, if it was me I wouldn't take him, I think he's gonna bust.

Since when did Wilkerson become our best player? Is Richardson on this team? Is Revis on this team? Hell... Im not even sure he is the second best D lineman on the team. An if your read my post.... I said I wasn't in favor of it, because I think he is good. But there is a reason the extension hasn't happened. You think Mac is just sitting on his ass playing checkers? There is a reason the extension hasn't happened. There is no valid reason to wait till after the draft with the rookie wage scale. So whay hasn't it happened yet?

That doesn't have to be the case. Perhaps they don't like what we know already, and it is only now being reported. It's sounds like Lovie likes the kid, so I don't see how they pass on him

At this point,, I'm just trusting whatever Mac, Bowles, and Gaily decide. I don't want him either and I have a feeling we are coming out of the draft with Grayson (they are bringing him in 2 days before the draft, that's interesting timing to determine if he fits our system)...but if Mac, Bowles, and Chan hang their hat on Winston (making this type of trade essentially puts your job in Winstons hands), than so be it. Every GM should get to pick their franchise QB, if Mac and Gaiky feels like he's the guy, I'm behind the move...but I don't like Winston either, trust me.

I agree 55. I don't think Mac will trade valuable draft picks to move up he is a scout at heart and the draft is where he will succeed or fail. I actually like Grayson and I have said it before but not for a 2nd rounder as people have him going. He is a 3rd or 4th round grade who will have to sit for two years if you want him to succeed the write up Elias had on all the QB's on another thread was scary and was shocked to read that Petty was a one read QB don't need another one like that on the roster. As you mentioned Superman these are all future backups except the for the Duck who will not be there at number 6.

The wild card in all this could be ownership. The Jet Stadium season ticket sales are not great and there is a lot of churn from the season ticket holders. Many season ticket holders are withholding their PSL payments and simply walking away from the tickets.

So would that cause Woody Johnson and upper management to push for a trade up for Mariota to create publicity buzz even though it may not be the prudent thing to do? It's a question worth asking. And I hope it's not the case. If Mariota falls to 6-the Jets should take him. If not, they should take one of the WR's or a Fowler type player.

Good variable to bring up, Parcells. Great post. I could see a move for Mariota or Winston to cause a buzz...but making such a move puts jobs on the line (everyone's but the owners). I tell you what, I'd be excited about the move, wouldnt you? Im not saying I would agree with a trade up for Mariota or Winston; but once they were on the roster, the analysis of every pass thrown in practice would be a daily interesting read, IMO...then when they got in the game, it would be cant miss TV.

Well, just look at Geno and RG3 as examples of the uphill struggle that is in front of Petty. In all honesty, I could see RG3 and Geno turn it around this year; but if they dont, their days as NFL starters will likely come to an end in 2016. I dont think the NFL has found a way to transition spread QBs into traditional QBs yet; but you know what, the NFL is full of really smart people...someone will figure it out. the Packers did with Rodgers, but they did it by having him hold a clipboard for almost 3 seasons. Most teams do not want to follow that model; but truth be told, that may actually be the formula...spread QBs need 3 season, likely 2 on the bench. I think NFL scouts and coaches have too much pride to admit anything takes 2 years to develop, so if someone cracks the code, great...until then, I think drafting spread QBs is a HUGE risk, especially if you're not patient. Its something fans need to keep in mind if their team drafts Petty or Hundley....likely even Mariota (though I like him working out in the offseason with Rivers, I think that will really help him develop fast).

I don't care if he falls, I just want to know why the consensus #1 Overall Pick for months, the guy everybody in his mother was touting as a mortal lock to the Bucs at #1 , and until this week the Bucs gave no indication that they weren't taking Winston, have suddenly appeared to do a 180?

You don't have to be Lt. Columbo to surmise they found something that scared them about Winston and its probably not football related, and we're talking about a kid in their own backyard, so their PI's know the lay of the land.

If you're gonna take this guy at 6, you better know what they found, thats all I'm saying.

the jets are doing their own due diligence. so i'd hope they make a decision (if it came to that) based on their own findings. i don't care for tampa's reasons for passing on him. i care what our scouts and front office think, after conducting their own research, meeting with the player, his coaches, and whomever else they talk to in doing the due diligence on winston.

that said, i find it highly unlikely winston is there at 6. personally, i'd be shocked if he isn't taken #1 .

Would I be excited by a move up for Winston or Mariota? No for Winston. I don't think you trade up for a guy with as many red flags as Winston shows. Winston has huge downside risk. As for Mariota-it depends on the package. If the Jets had to mortgage this year's 1 and 2 and next year's 1 for the move up, I would say no. Would it be fun to read about Mariota's progress and exciting to see him develop? Absolutely. But in my mind it's far better to hang on to those picks, pick wisely and develop a talented and deep roster and try to acquire a better QB next year. After all the ultimate goal is to develop a new culture of winning and excellence with the new regime, no?

I agree with everything said here.

1) I think Winston goes #1
2) Who cares what Tampas OC, QB coach, scouts, and GM think of Winston...we dont run tampa's offense, we run Chan's Spread offense....we need the QB our coaches and scouts like and front office approves.

All good points by Hobson.

I dont disagree. The only part I disagree with is the compensation to move up. if Chan gaily stood in front of me and said mariota leading the offense and the quality of our defense will win us Super Bowls and have us in the play-offs annually...I give up next years 1 and never look back. Gaily knows about Qbs that he can use to win a lot of football games from his time with the Steelers and Cowboys...if he looks at mariota and see a big time prospects that perfectly fits what he's trying to implement, im 100% behind the move to move future picks to get "our guy." I even like the players we've put around him to be successful with Decker, marshall, and Kerley to go with ivory, Ridley, and Powell. id have a hard time hearing that from Gaily and not making a move to get him if one presents itself...but we dont know who Gaily likes in this class, so it will be interesting.
