Inside the mind of GM Mike Maccagnan & 2018 NFL Draft

This is the first draft that all hands on deck approach was used... Some may get a little overwhelmed in that statement saying what the hell has he been doing since taking this job but in reality when he got here the team was built for success and any good G.M. would roll the dice and try to continue the success from the previous year... The notion of a successful failure of a season is exactly what happened... With a winning record, but missing the playoffs Maccagnan did what any other G.M. in his position would do, and tried to fill the holes to continue what his first season was and this time try to make the playoffs, boy complete disaster which led to the ultimate decision it is time overhaul this roster from top to bottom... To this point he has done just that only less than a handful of players are left from the old regime and even tho the potential is there, there is plenty more to do...

Right now thee roster on defense has lots of potential after opening the wallet to sign a true leader and no. 1 corner, consider last season Claiborne played well, didn't stay healthy for the entire season but bringing in Trumaine Johnson will allow the secondary take the next step along with the sophomore safeties to be more aggressive... Last year we got plenty from the linebacker positions, and chose not to over pay for a career year in Davis, then going out into free agency and signing one of the premier run stopping - coverage inside linebackers available to help Darron Lee do his thing better moving forward...

Curious decisions now are from what was the strengths of this defense for many years now, looks like the handicap but is it really? Still a long ways before we should start complaining... So what is he thinking? Plenty of options in free agency and one everyone seems enamored in signing Johnathan Hankins, there are others but we have time to make this signings happen, right now it is draft time...

Breaking down the interest at Quarterback in this year's draft... Sam Darnold looks to be in the driver seat to be this year's one overall but some debate on who the Browns truly like... There is some speculation that the Browns could go Josh Allen, while this could be true doesn't really help the Jets out as the Giants are said to be taking Saquon Barkley only if Sam Darnold is not there... So it comes down to the next two Quarterbacks on everyone's big board in Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen....

The nitch:

Sam Darnold
His intangibles, clutch gene and prowess at making plays off platform enable most NFL decision-makers to overlook his elongated throwing motion and propensity to fumble. Accurate on the move with good anticipation.

Josh Allen
Looks like Tarzan, is as accurate as Jane. Biggest upside. The prototypical size and rare arm talent will seduce many, but this is the definition of a project. Boom or bust. Whoever drafts him will ignore his 56.2 completion percentage.

Baker Mayfiled
More Drew Brees and Russell Wilson than Johnny Manziel, but he’s still a shade under 6-1. Accurate alpha dog with a forever chip on his shoulder. Inspirational leader with accuracy, mobility and moxie.

Josh Rosen
The most pro-ready of the bunch comes armed with baggage — durability (two concussions, shoulder) and his love for the game. Silky smooth throwing motion. Is he too smart for his own good? Too entitled? How much does he love football?

If you are G.M. Maccagnan who would be your sure fire guarantee, there is none but the most overall sound prospect is the one that doesn't meet the norm. in height requirement that the league is or has been used too... Do you go with the prototypical signal caller in Rosen who is the only one pro ready to start day one, the other two Allen and Darnold need one maybe two years to acclimate to this level and our current roster has a stable that can give either of those two the chance to evolve... Or do you go with the guy that has everything a New Yorker stands for, leave it on your sleeve mentality or is his brash attitude too much to bet the house on...

Look at the chances Maccagnan has done so far, everyone tells me that there is one way to go and its all or nothing... The Jets do like Sam Darnold because he has the highest ceiling but there is no way he is getting past No. 2 overall and we do not have any more assets to move up from 3 to 2... Darnold goes one then we have three to pick but Mayfield looks to be on the Jets big board as the clear cut favorite number two with all the separate visits that he had with G.M. Maccagnan, Todd Bowles, two meetings with O.C. Jeremy Bates, workout with Chad Pennington, meeting with interim owner Christopher Johnson, dinner with the coaching staff and GM, then another lunch with the interim owner not to mention meeting with the scouts and coaches at the combine, and sr. bowl... Team was at his pro day, watched then worked him and his favorite targets Dimitri Flowers and Mark Andrews shows the interest or intrigue they have in him...

This is the mindset of a G.M who doesn't care who thinks he is desperate, more so trying to find that guys to lead this team and current reclamation project (full rebuild) a guy with moxie, the attitude, leadership and New York Personality that will come in here and never lose that chip on his shoulder to prove he can be this team's savior... If the Jets don't take Mayfield this would go down as the biggest smoke screen ever in any NFL Draft in history... Have to look at it like this, Mike Maccagnan traded three twos to guarantee he can make this pick, now if it is Mayfield then Baker will need to prove he was worth it...

And he needs to prove it day 1 on and off the field. I don't like him at all and everyone knows that, but I want him to succeed if selected by the Jets. My support as a fan will probably be on a much shorter leash than Ham and others, but I surely don't want him to fail because that means the Jets move farther away from the SB.

And then again, perhaps it is all a bluff to con Cleveland or the G-aints into taking Mayfield so we are left with the guy we REALLY want. Who can tell?

wouldn't be the first time... I am torn, my head tells me Rosen but the injury issues are concerning. My heart is all Mayfield; the kid will leave it all out there and has done so his whole career. His teammates and the fans will love him. A new era for sure.

We all would want him to succeed. We all have seen the numbers. You have tried to look beyond those numbers and look at what is inside his head. You see the problems.
I tried to look inside his heart. This is someone who had the grit and dedication to walk onto the campus of two major Division I schools without a scholarship and become their starting quarterback. That shows me the kind of person who won't quit until he has attained his goals of being the best.
Add that to his ability, and I want that kind of tough sumbi**h leading my team.

When reading this Tebow looks good lol...........I will be happy with any of the four but Bridgewater is my man now. It would be funny to win the SB with Simon & Garfunkel & our draft choice turns out to be a bust at qb. I just wish I knew how healthy he really will be by the start of the season.

If Macc drafts Mayfield, he might as well pack his bags because he will be gone in 2 years. IMO Mayfield will turn out to be another Mike Phipps.

Good post Tebow. Agree completely. I'm not a fan of Mayfield and would prefer any of the other QBs frankly. If we draft him, I'll support him. But he needs to prove it on and off the field. He's on a very short lease. I've spoken to a number of Jet fans that feel the same way. This kid will get run out of town the by media and the fans if he screws this chance up. So he'd better bring his A game, every practice and every game, and better be a model citizen off the field.

More than anything, I think that first year's 10-6 record delayed the full rebuild a year, but now that is being used against the front office. You can't blame them for not tearing down the team after a 10-6 year, for instead going into win-now mode. Could you imagine Jets fans if they had torn it down after going 10-6?

But this is the first example we have seen of the full rebuild. The jettisoning of veteran players, the freeing of cap space to use on good young free agents. The expense of draft capital to try to secure a franchise QB.

I'm sure some fans will be upset with any QB they take early. Some fans are down on Mayfield, others on Allen, others on Rosen...maybe even a few on Darnold. I, for one, look forward to seeing how any QB taken in the first will develop, and hope fans remember whichever one is taken is still a young man and a rookie.

Sack - agree on virtually all counts. I would just say this - his youth does not give him license to be a problem, immature, irresponsible or worse. As far as play goes, of course he gets some slack as rookie. He'll need time to develop. But when you draft a guy at the #3 pick, and you give up as much we did to get him, he'd better be worth it. So this pick comes with a lot of pressure, no matter who the Jets draft. Pressure on management, the coaches and most importantly the player. And with Mayfield, there's a lot of character concerns that he needs to overcome. I'm not saying he can't, I'm just saying he needs to prove it. On the field, his height is a concern, he needs to overcome that..I think that's an easier bar to hurdle than character issues. That's my concern with this kid. I think he can play. I'm just not sure if he's ready to lead men and be a leader in the community.

I can agree with that. Stupidity off the field should not be tolerated. Someone with opinions, fine. Someone who is getting into trouble, though? No, thanks.

I am most concerned, when it comes to character, as to how a locker room feels about a QB. To me, that's the most important barometer.

Well, lucky for us the fans aren’t the GM of this team, because we’d have a new coach every single year. And a new QB, and a new OC....

I’m going to try to be realistic and assume that nobody is walking through that door on day 1 and taking the job. They’re going to have to demonstrate that they’re ready for the QB1 position before they get handed the keys. I expect at least a half season of preparation and maybe even a full season before anyone we take is ready.

Well, at least we agree on this one. No way any qb we draft starts opening day unless he looks like Tom Brady ....And the only way he will look like Tom Brady is if he has 10 seconds to throw like Tom brady.

Told you I like to make people laugh and that made me laugh and if no one else laughed but me, I'm ok with it cause I'm still laughing

I'll throw in my agreement here too. The 10-6 record actually hurt us in the long run but Mac did what any other gm would have done. Now let's hope he continues to do only what great gm's do

I'm not as excited as everyone else about drafting a qb, cause I don't believe we see him play this year

I agree. I am pretty impressed by someone who could walk on to 2 college teams uninvited and win the starting job both times.
