Is Darrelle Revis done at cornerback?

The New York Jets spent a lot of money on Darrelle Revis last offseason and he failed to prove he was worth it.

He was better than most cornerbacks in the league, but when stacked up against players like Richard Sherman and Josh Norman, he didn’t compare well. Norman and Sherman both shut down some of the league’s best wide receivers.

Norman was able to stop the receivers he faced on the outside like Julio Jones and Odell Beckham . The only time receivers had success against Norman was in the slot position.

Sherman was the only cornerback to stop Antonio Brown this season. Sherman limited him to just six receptions for 51 yards. He was able to stop the best wide receiver in the league in a game where Ben Roethlisberger threw for over 500 yards.

Yes, Revis had five interceptions this season, but so did Marcus Williams. That statistic does not measure how well a cornerback is playing. Meanwhile, Revis got beat on several occasions by both DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins. The final game of the season was the most important and Revis did not show up to lockdown Watkins.

It appeared as though Revis was playing off of him all game to avoid getting beat deep but Watkins ran circles around him on short routes. In a game where the Buffalo Bills faced a lot of short 3rd downs these routes mattered.

Watkins had 11 receptions for 136 yards. Revis is getting paid to lock up wide receivers and take away the opposing team’s best weapon.
Hopkins had 118 yards receiving and two touchdown catches against Revis. On multiple occasions, Revis was getting beat down the field. This game made it very evident that Revis has lost a step and can no longer play the same type of press coverage we are accustomed to seeing.

Sherman and Norman are about three years younger than Revis, but when the highest paid cornerback in the league doesn’t produce people start to notice.

Now, the Jets are not going to release a player that has almost as much guaranteed money as most quarterbacks in the league. Maybe it is time for Revis to change positions like Charles Woodson.

His football IQ is astronomical and that is why maybe it is time for him to take a few steps back and play safety. It would be a great option for the Jets and Revis. Woodson extended his playing time in the NFL by switching to safety and even won Defensive Player of the Year with the Green Bay Packers at the age of 33.

The Jets still have Calvin Pryor and he is getting better and better. The logical spot for him would be a free-safety and move Marcus Gilbert back to cornerback.

Revis will not have to worry too much about getting beat by the quicker receivers and he can still blanket one side of the field. He can also increase his longevity in the NFL.

Revis is still a top tier CB who just isn't the player he once was.( must understand that ,but there isn't any wrong with that- everyone gets old) There is no way you move him to safety making the money he's making.( he's getting Qb pay) .

Maybe in couple years after you stop paying him top CB money you might have this conversation . Not now.
Now you must understand against the elite Wr you might have to give him a little more help.( against Watkins that more on the coaching staff not adjusting their coverages, than on Revis). If D Revis is the Jets biggest problem in their secondary, than the Jets secondary is in pretty good shape.

Marcus Gilchrist at CB would be a disaster. D Revis even now is so much better at CB than Marcus Gilchrist would be. ( the Jets aren't getting better making that move , but creating a bigger hole in the secondary).

Revis gets burned a couple of times, has a couple of bad games, and everyone starts flipping out. Look, Revis isn't in his prime years anymore, but he still played well over the course of 16 games. He got whipped by DeAndre Hopkins, who's one of the up and coming stars in this league. He also struggled some against Sammy Watkins, who again, is another very good WR. Most CB's are going to get beat by those two.

He's not going to lock down everyone, but he'll still lock down over 90% of them. For a 30-31 year old player at that position, that's still very good.

Revis used to be the complete package, his turns and speed are gone. He needs to compensate with his emense football knowledge and by giving a ton of cushion. He can almost shut down your run of the mill number 1wr, but can't stop the elites.

In the past he could guard any wr at any time and hold him to 0 catches. Now the elites will be covered but know how to trick him when they need a catch.
