Panthers have released Clowney. Should the Jets look to sign him to a one year deal. In the 7 million range? Would give us an edge setting DE who can still rush the passer.

The thought occurred to me when I saw the article but then I thought...........to what end ? Glenn wants to develop what he has and he would be taking reps away from a player being developed for that spot. It's not as if we were an edge rusher away from a championship. So I think if I were the decision maker I would pass.

I'll probably get beat up for this, but the guy who hasn't been mentioned at all who may have some value as an edge setter is Michael Cleamons. He was nothing short of a disappointment because of lack of discipline, but he does have some value if Glenn can harness the mental side of his game.

Not really much at the position to take snaps from. McDonald who has shown near nothing, and JJ who improved in 23 but is coming off the injury and may not be ready to start the season.
Clemons has been a liability. That leaves Baron who is a bit of a project and is not expected to take many snaps early as a rookie. There's a real need for an additional player in the rotation. Also need a DT but that's a whole different post....
We're definitely not an edge rusher away from a championship, but we are an edge rusher away from competing on a weekly basis. Roster is not near set. More additions will be made and players will be released.

If....
If the Queen has balls, she would be the King

That's truly a big if. He was constantly out of position trying to set the edge . That lead to big gains and TDs. He was nearly as bad vs the pass. Then there are the stupid costly penalties, late hit, late hit out of bounds, roughing the passer.. always seemed to come on 3rd down stops to extend the opponents drive. His most memorable moments are cursing fans along the sidelines and getting his ass kicked 3 times in one game. Once on the field and twice in the tunnel. And lastly,he is due a bonus due to his increase in snaps last year and his salary will jump to $3.3 mill. None guaranteed

I agree with all of that, but it all stems from the lack of discipline across the entire defense, and yes him particularly. I'm hoping that Glenn sets a different standard going forward and discipline is no longer an issue. I also feel that Cleamons would have been released by now if they thought he wasn't redeemable.
On another note, you mentioned that McDonald has shown near nothing. Was that a typo?

Sounds like a cut candidate to me with that non guaranteed contract.

I think cuts will commence on June 1 for cap reasons so I'm not reading too much into the roster as of now. I expect several players to be released and several additions. No Typo regarding McDonald. He improved his pass rushing but is invisible vs the run. That's why I would love to see an edge setting DE be brought in for a year. Then hopefully T Baron develops into that role. I see McDonald's ceiling as a 3rd down pass rushing specialist. Unfortunately,if we can't stop the run on f first and second down, that leaves few third down opportunities.
