New York Jets are planning to place the franchise tag on Muhammad Wilkerson but the speculation doesn't there. With the new speculated cap charge for 2016 being reported a whopping $155 Million the Jets and other ball clubs have more than enough money to absorb a contract like the one the Jets will be giving Wilkerson, approximately $15.5 Million cap hit. Rumors are the Jets will listen to trade offers especially from the Oakland Raiders who have been openly expressive in acquiring Wilkerson. The Raiders currently hold the 14th pick in the 2016 draft which for the Jets could be just enticing enough to strike a deal to send their franchised tagged player to the west coast.
Considering any kind of trade, what is Muhammad Wilkerson current value? Currently recovering from a broken leg suffered in the final game of the season and is on the mend to recovery will the Jets get max value in a trade or is he just worth lets say the Oakland's first round pick number 14 only? To me, Wilkerson has proven it on the field to be a true competitor and play maker while off the field he is a leader not only in the locker room but in the community. If by those means alone wouldn't his value be multiple draft picks to say least a 1st & 3rd even if the 3rd is a future pick?
Last year the luck of the draw best player available we were basically awarded another potentially great defensive lineman in Leonard Williams, giving us thee option to be in this position this off season. Unfortunately we drafted Muhammad and the hope was he would be a lifer, but that doesn't always happen just because the level of potential and the egos of these players today being hyped up by their agents and the outside world telling them to break the bank of the ball clubs even though they are already stand to make millions on top of millions of dollars playing a game that is a privilege.
So if you were in Mike Maccagnan's shoes what would you do? Would you trade Muhammad or keep him and by keeping him after next year do you re-tag him with another franchise tag if a long term deal is not completed? (2017 tag roughly $19.5 Million). Do we keep him for one season to prove that his unfortunate leg injury didn't affect his game in anyway to drive the price up, but wouldn't that be a gamble on our part? Do you listen to all offers until the night before the draft and make the best trade ever? What do you feel is the right price for a talent who consistently proved himself year to year in the five years he has been in the league?
