Player News:

If an offensive lineman with the last name Shell rings a bell, Brandon's great uncle is Pro Football Hall of Fame member and former NFL head coach Art Shell.

Brandon Shell started his final 47 games at South Carolina dating back to 2012. Most of those starts came at right tackle before moving to the left side as a senior.

Shell miss the 2015 spring after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, but returned to start every game at left tackle, earning third-team All-SEC honors by Phil Steele.

Player Overview:

Shell sports good size and weight distribution throughout... He has broad shoulders oddly enough has a trim mid region... Brandon has excellent initial quickness and plays with solid leverage... He holds up well in pass protection because of his length and patience...

Overall he will need to improve his stance and footwork but projects to be a solid right tackle that will be good against speed rushers while being a dominate run blocker... He has a very good wide base and his first step explosiveness will allow him to gain an advantage against edge rushers at the next level...

Solid pick. Comes from a great pedigree and lineage of the late great Art Shell.

Hear me out. Some Jets fans on twitter are livid that we gave up next years 4rth. These fans should understand that in '17 we WILL be awarded compensatory picks for the losses of Ivory and Harrison. Most likely we will receive our 4rth rounder back.

Mac is buidling this team the right way. So far i'am very happy with this draft. Very strategic.

most draft profiles on him were mediocre. obviously they must like him to give up a 4th next year for him. hope for the best

It's hard to read scouting reviews like that, only to hear he projects as a 6th round pick. Then to know we gave up a future asset for him:global (21):

let's just say it's worth it if it plays ANY role in getting Breno off the roster (though I'm not too confident in that being the case) . . .

I hope you're right about this, because I've also read that's not the case (but too clueless to know who's right!)

I view him as an Austin Howard. He has to be groomed and eased in there this year. By 2017, he should get progressively better.

I just get the feeling Mac is just itching to release Breno..badly.

According to this by OTC the Jets comp picks have been canceled out by FA signings

Not to mention he's had surgery to both shoulders.

Not a good thing for an OL

this pick would do one thing would move Brent Qvale into the starting role so they can develop Shell as the role player... Remember they stated they would be comfortable with Qvale to start at RT...

if they truly want to re-sign Fitz, they will need to release someone and everyone believes Breno could be that guy...

I seem to have missed something. How did the Jets acquire a 5th round pick?

I was wondering the same damn thing but I see they traded next years 4th. Like this pick and this is turning out to be a damn good draft Mac and TB. Great damn job!

Certainly has a pedigree. That said, I have never liked the conventional logic of a pick next year being downgraded one round from this year's picks. That line of thought has never made tremendous sense to me.

I like addressing the OL, so I'm fine with this pick. Right now, I am trusting Maccagnan and his people regarding player evaluation.

I saw Art Shell play.
If this kid has 1/10 the ability of Art Shell, he'll still be 100% better than last year's starter at right tackle. All he has to do is stand there and he'd be better.
Heck, I'm 6' 1/2" , 185 pounds and 72 years old and I'M better than he was.
Good pick.

Don't tell Art he's dead! Maybe you were thinking of his line mate Gene Upshaw, he passed some years back.

It makes sense from the acquiring partner's viewpoint, since they are buying a pig in a poke.
NOBODY knows where a future pick will turn out to be, so coupled with the loss of immediate value, a future pick MUST be scored as the last pick of that round for current trading valuation.
It's not that anyone actually BELIEVES the Jets will win the Super Bowl and make that 4th rounder the last pick in Rd 4 in 2017, but it MUST be valued as such, in case the unlikely happens.
Ultimately the buyer is in charge & has the upper hand in valuation - and the seller, (Jets), has to accept that future value assignment.
Beggers can't be choosers.

There's not a lot of kickback in this valuation system, it's pretty much accepted practice - and has been ever since Jimmy Johnson revised the draft value charts.
Plus, acceptance of it has eliminated a LOT of haggling over what the current year prospects of the selling team's final record 6 months down the road.
THAT kind of talk probably goes on, but nobody is buying the other side's estimates.

Don't forget, a LOT of these trades include swapping future picks as well, (next year's 6th or 7th for your 5th or 6th, thrown in as an equalizer for this year's trade, kinda stuff).
The "last pick of the round" valuation applies there as well, so both teams take it up the arse in the same trade, in such scenarios.
Ditto all those "conditional" future draft picks, which are double-blind, based not only on the team's success, but the individual player traded's success.
