@Old#15 we won't know what Joe Douglas can do until Adam Gase is replaced, he was here first he weaseled his way to control the organization by allowing the former GM do his thing, got him fired and then proceeded to hire his friend who has done next to nothing to this point but the obvious moves that have NOT been made yet...

League year starts tomorrow, hopefully first move is Post June 1 cut Trumaine Johnson, Tender Maulet & Burgess who played well enough to earn another shot to continue their above board play...

We are strapped with the corona virus so we can not bring in IR players to clear them so we can make trades or cuts of current players...

Fair enough 69, but what coaches don't influence player acquisition? Kind of a ridiculous statement... Also sounds as though people around here have already soured on Douglas who is one day into his first free agency period. I understand better than anyone the frustrations of being a Jet fan (since 1969 - yes a bandwagon kid), but it just amazes and frustrates me sometimes the lack of patience that is exhibited. Everybody is an expert who doesn't have to deal with the realities of the job.

I am not sour on Joe D. but we all agreed how this marriage took place if Douglas did not have full control it would be a shit show until Gase is gone... There is influence and there is total control, and right now it seems Gase is Judge, Jury and executioner of the New York Jets until the ownership decides otherwise...

I respectfully disagree; I don't think Douglas would have risked his career's reputation on the judgement of a coach who he doesn't respect. I believe this is Douglas' show, and feel that we are in good hands for a change. Just my opinion though, for what thats worth.

yup your opinion, but like all the GMs of the past until the draft signing free agents are good short term solutions that we can not keep doing every few years...

I think our three FA OL signings are stopgap and that JD will add at least one more OL as a premium pick in draft. Wouldnt be surprised to see 2 of our top 4 picks as OL.

Some possible insight on the Fant signing:

From TheJetsBlog (SNY)
...However, there could be something that Douglas, a former offenisve lineman himself, sees in Fant. Either way, it is a very intriguing signing.
Fant's NFL story is an interesting one. At 6-foot-5, 322 pounds, he was a former basketball player at Western Kentucky that played two college football games at tight end -- not on the line. But the Seahawks took a chance on him in 2016 anyway when they signed him as an undrafted free agent project.
In three seasons, he's started in 24 games, tore his ACL in 2017, and is still a work in progress. According to The Post's Brian Costello, the team is viewing him as a left tackle that could move to right tackle if need be...

...This deal, though, needs to be read between the lines to understand what Douglas truly did in bringing Fant on board.
When you break down the numbers that were confirmed by SNY's Ralph Vacchiano, Fant's deal is actually $27.3 million over those three years. And while $13.7 million is guaranteed, it's only $9.25 million fully guaranteed. The other $4.45 million will be fully guaranteed in 2021 on the fifth league day. Finally, bonuses make the contract's max $30 million.
So, as Manish Mehta of the Daily News pointed out, Fant is basically joining the Jets on a one-year deal worth $9.25 million.

That isn't too bad for someone that can be viewed as still being a work in progress at the tackle position. And the Jets can still add another tackle in the NFL Draft with the No. 11 overall pick.

From NorthJersey.com
The Jets committed far less money to Fant than if they had paid one of the top offensive linemen on the market: tackle Jack Conklin ($14 million per year, $30 million guaranteed) signed with the Browns and guard Grahm Glasgow ($11 million per year, $26 million guaranteed) signed with the Broncos on Monday.
But the $13.7 million guaranteed is still a significant amount, especially considering that Fant has only 24 career starts. The Jets, and general manager Joe Douglas, who is regarded as an expert among executives in offensive linemen, are clearly hoping that Fant can reach his full potential, which would make the contract look like a steal in a couple of years.
Fant has certainly shown upside. He's relatively young, set to turn 28 in July. And he's clearly got some skill, the 6-5, 322-pound former college basketball player at Western Kentucky, went from undrafted to starting on left tackle on the Seahawks' offensive line in 2016. He suffered a torn ACL during the preseason of the 2017 season, and hasn't been a full-time starter since.
