Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is having surgery on his left shoulder soon, so he will be holding his only pre-draft throwing session for NFL scouts, coaches, and executives on Friday.

After three years of play that have almost certainly made him the first overall pick of the 2021 draft, there would seem to be little reason for Lawrence to go through the motions and little reason for teams other than the Jaguars to be heading to South Carolina for the day. The Jaguars will be there and they will reportedly have company.

Albert Breer of SI.com reports that six other teams in the top 10 of the draft will be in attendance. The Jets, Dolphins, Falcons, Eagles, Broncos, and Panthers are also set to watch Lawrence. D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Falcons coach Arthur Smith and General Manager Terry Fontenot will be representing the team.

Per Breer, one of the teams said they felt they had to be there to see Lawrence “just in case” something unexpected happens with the Jaguars. That seems unlikely, but preparing for all eventualities is part of the job.

If you look up "exercise in futility" this would be a perfect example.
Are they planning to give up a substantial amount of draft capital to move up one spot if they feel there is an incremental difference between Lawrence and Wilson? How big is the difference? How much would they give up?
And if there is a substantial difference, is it worth it?
Can the difference be made up by keeping the #2 and using that draft capital to support that #2 pick?
Or:
Do they just think the Jacksonville hierarchy will all suffer a collective brain cramp on draft day and allow Lawrence slip to #2?

Whatever they do, don't tug on our emotions and then draft THE Ohio State guy.

Its called due diligence. What happens if Jags see something that they don't like and either trade pick or select one of the other QBs? JD has to be ready for any contingency.

If that happens, Al Davis will rise up out of his grave and dance through NFL headquarters, taking down pictures of Pete Rozelle and throwing them in the trash (where they belong).

Have to be prepared. A few years ago a certain QB was a “lock” to go to Cleveland with the #1 pick

AND MAYBE, they are just there to check out some of the receivers....................................Maybe they went for the refreshments. Who knows ? It's pretty certain that unless his talent display sucked the Jets weren't getting a shot at him and if that was the case they wouldn't want him. So.........I'm guessing they knew that a receiver they were interested in was going to be there and that is why they showed up. Just a hunch of course.

Trevor is Jags QB and I didnt see the reason for him to throw. What QB does on the field is what matters and how much talent was put around him to be this good. Zack Wilson played great ,accurate passer and could move, throw. Talk of Zack by scouts being better than Trevor is questionable. Zack Wilson is a must for our Jets. Jets needs to build a team to his strengths so Zack can grow with our new Head Coach. Zack has high potential and some comparing to Packer Rogers . Lets hold off on that and give Zack a chance. I think Trevor to Jags with their new College Coach isnt going to turn out well, just like Dolphins college coach giving up heading to Bama. I m not sure Jags with coach and QB is a sure thing. Jets with new Coach and if any brains take Zack Wilson in Draft could be a greatest move by Jets since drafting Joe Namath. Lmfao hard to believe Jets not able to draft the correct QB since 1965. Thats must be a record for dumbest drafting team in NFL. I hope this GM can be smartest since 1965 Jets GM. I like our GM but we will see who he picks with first pick. Hope its Zack Wilson unless Jags takes him leaving Trevor to Jets. Either QB will be good for Jets.
