The Jets still have five games left in this lost 2-9 season, but the race to find a replacement for head coach Rex Ryan already appears to be underway.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Raiders and Jets are "expected to inquire" whether 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh can be had in a trade. Via Twitter, Schefter also said: "One NFL source convinced Raiders are the favorite to trade for HC Jim Harbaugh, but Jets also known to be keeping a close eye on situation."

Last month, we had spitballed Harbaugh as a potential candidate to replace Ryan with the Jets.

Harbaugh has taken the 49ers to three NFC championship games and one Super Bowl in three seasons. At his previous stop, he quickly transformed Stanford University into a winner. But he and the Niners have been rumored to be on the outs for months. Back in October, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that Harbaugh would not be back in San Francisco next season, even if the team were to win this year's Super Bowl.

Trading for an NFL head coach is not unprecedented—even for the Jets. In 1997, the Jets had to swing a trade with the Patriots to get Bill Parcells. Three years later, the Jets demanded—and received—compensation after Bill Belichick resigned as HC of the NYJ one day after being hired, only to sign with the Patriots a few weeks afterward. In 2006, the Jets received a first-round draft pick from the Chiefs for Herm Edwards. And in one high-profile deal that didn't involve the Jets, Jon Gruden had been traded from the Raiders to the Bucs once upon a time.

The Jets would likely have to send the Niners a first-round pick to get Harbaugh, who figures to have other suitors. The Raiders are one potential option, and their Bay Area proximity means Harbaugh wouldn't have to move his family. Another Harbaugh landing spot could be the University of Michigan, which seems likely to fire head coach Brady Hoke. Harbaugh had been a star quarterback at Michigan back in the '80s.

Trade or no trade, here are three questions a potential Harbaugh-Jets marriage presents:

1. Would Harbaugh want control of the football operations as general manager, too?

2. Right now, the Jets would pick fifth in next year's draft. Would Harbaugh want to take over without the opportunity such a high draft pick affords? At the same time, the Jets figure to have a boatload of salary-cap space this offseason, which Harbaugh might find compelling.

3. What would Harbuagh want to do at quarterback if he were to come to One Jets Drive without a first-round pick? Try to work with Geno Smith? Bring back Michael Vick? Trade for Robert Griffin III?

The race is on, but this is the only thing certain at this point: Schefter's report signals the Jets are indeed preparing to fire Ryan in the weeks ahead.

I wonder if we can swap firsts? We would also need to give them our 3rd and prob a 5th and then another 2nd the next year?

I wouldn't mind Harbaugh, I feel the Jets need a offensive minded coach to help balance this team, however I would not trade a top 5 pick for him.

a top 5 pick is steep.. but if the reports are true that his wife doesn't want to move it's probably a moot point..

True, I heard she doesn't want to leave the west coast. However, throw enough money at someone and they change their tune quickly.

While I love what Harbaugh has accomplished at Stanford and with SF, I don't want him here. Something about him- from his mannerisms to the way he handles the media to the way he clashes with FO...it just doesn't sit well with me.

Additionally, on the field, he had Andrew Luck at Stanford. He took a #1 overall pick and made him serviceable in Alex Smith, who is still enjoying similar success with KC under Reid- yet Harbaugh gets star treatment simply for making him serviceable. Kaep on the other hand has extraordinary physical talent, a strong receiving corp, and Frank Gore in the backfield, yet he's regressed substantially since Harbaugh made him the starter. And coming from a friend who is a gigantic 49ers fan: Harbaugh's offensive play calling at big and critical moments of games is atrocious.

All of this makes me very weary of wasting a top 5 draft pick on him.
