New York Jets wide receiver Braxton Berrios posted career-highs in targets (65), receptions (46), and receiving yards (431) with two touchdowns across 16 games in 2021. He owned 11% of the team’s target share while averaging 5.3 YAC per reception, 22nd among all wideouts. Berrios made the first All-Pro team for his contributions to special teams. The 26-year-old is expected to start the season No. 4 on the wide receiver depth chart behind Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, and first-round rookie Garrett Wilson.
Berrios Has Enough Skill Set to be Dangerous
Berrios can get open and should have a vital role on special teams as one of the league’s top returners. With the former New England Patriot being buried at the No. 4 on the WR depth chart, Berrios is mainly a late-round flier in an ascending Jets offense.Berrios has personally seen his own stock fly in that time. From six catches in his first season to becoming a trusted target of quarterback Zach Wilson at the tail end of last year.
Berrios’ production hasn’t been prolific, but it has been impactful. He has clear chemistry with Zach Wilson dating back to last season. Either be end arounds or quick screens and slants his production has been limited due to all the talent now in the receiving room. There have been rumors about one maybe two players likely trade chips. Rookie receiver Garrett Wilson has been extraordinary to start his first three games.
By chance there is a trade either Corey Davis who was revealed by ESPN Rich Cimini as one candidate as possible target for some NFC teams as one possibility. Another is Denzel Mims who requested a trade prior to the beginning of the season, but balled out in the final preseason game putting his name in the mix for more snaps this season.
Now that LaFleur has capable options from the receiver room, tight end room and receiving backs there is only one ball to spread around. The key for the foreseeable future is how to get the ball into everyone’s hands? Or is it time to shop some of the bigger contracts to let the young one feast? Joe Douglas is finally in a good position with so much talent in key position groups affords him flexibility to make moves.
So What Is Next?
Could we see one or two Jets be on the move via trade, with the depth at the receiver position with second year Elijah Moore clearly the true number one option. Rookie Garrett Wilson has quietly pushed the envelope so far just in three games. Can or will Denzel Mims push the envelope he clearly has the talent. Security option Braxton Berrios has a role, but will they finally incorporate him in the offense? Time will tell.
