The Jets fell to the Bengals, 27-12, at MetLife Stadium in Week 3. Here is some quick takeaways from Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Rookies showing they belong, but issues with depth on the offensive line especially at the tackle position is starting to become a problem.

Breece Hall continues to show his versatility

Rookie RB Breece Hall continues to show his versatility as he received an increased workload Sunday. Hall was targeted 11 times by Joe Flacco and finished with 6 catches for 53 yards. He and Michael Carter both had 39 rushing yards, and the Iowa State product led the backfield averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

A couple of those early grabs kept drives alive as Hall got 18 on a third-and-3 early in the second and then displayed his elusiveness on a 7-yard gain after the two minute warning on a third-and-4.

“He’s really good in the pass game,” Saleh said. “Obviously, we have to find some more opportunities for him, but he’s a dynamic back. Just get the ball in his hands somehow and he can make something happen.”

No. 4 Pick Broke Up 2 Passes vs. Cincinnati

After the Jets’ loss to the Bengals on Sunday, rookie CB Sauce Gardner told reporters he had two goals. First, get a win. Second, jumpstart his campaign for the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award by playing well against Cincinnati WR Ja’Marr Chase.

The Jets fell short, 27-12. But when asked if his performance sent a message to the NFL, Sauce responded emphatically: “Most definitely.”

“I felt like I did what I had to do,” Gardner said. “But it’s not about me, it’s about the team.,” Gardner said. ” So, we got to be able to do what we have to do as a collective.”

Gardner stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 4 tackles, 2 passes defended and a tackle for loss. He lined up primarily on the left side of the defense and matched up multiple times with the 2021 Second Team All-Pro Chase. just as he planned.

“I had this one circled,” Gardner said. “I was looking forward to going against Chase. A lot of people say he is the best receiver in the league, and I have the goal of being defensive rookie of the year. That is one of my big individual goals and I feel I got to be able to go against the best if I want to be able to achieve that. So yes, I was looking forward to it.”

Early in the 1st quarter, Cincy QB Joe Burrow tested Gardner. He went step-for-step with Chase on a long pass downfield and broke up the well-placed ball with his nearly 80-inch wingspan.

Jets Sauce Sizzling vs Chase

Continuity issues along the offensive line

George Fant, forced back to left tackle to start the season after Duane Brown sustained a shoulder injury in practice, left Sunday’s game with a knee injury. He was replaced in the lineup by Conor McDermott, who had been inactive on gameday until Sunday.

Fant ended up having a tough day against Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson and left the game in the third quarter, after allowing Hendrickson a strip-sack.

“He’s a good player. It’s tough going against anybody right now,” Fant told The Post. “Right now, I’m just working my butt off trying to get back healthy, back to 100 percent.”

When asked if he thought he needed to take a week off, Fant said, “I don’t know.”

The Jets already are hurting at tackle and having a hurting Fant, or no Fant at all. Just another blow to the shaky offensive line. The Jets lost Mekhi Becton to a knee injury in August and then Duane Brown, signed as Becton’s replacement, injured his shoulder before Week 1 and is on injured reserve until at least Week 5. So what is next, do they have a plan in place or could this be another big issue moving forward?

My takeaway is that yesterday was a bad performance overall by the Jets. But suggesting that the season is over at 1-2 is so Jets fan. We’ve got 14 games left. Let’s watch about half of those before writing the season off.

Your always pretty positive. Are we beating the Steelers this week? Because isn’t Miami up next? It’s not getting too much easier. This week it could be argued that we should win

flacco has a better chance against the Steelers defense then Zach according to Bart and Willy. I agree

My takeaway is that the team isn't ready for the season. This is not unusual but this is on the coaching. And I don't expect it to continue all season. If Wilson wasn't ready then Flacco should've been pulled for White. Why? Because coaching can't fix what's wrong with him. You can see this in a handful of throws.

Yet somehow, he's throwing about 50-60 passes a game. I mean you have a weakness qb and you don't fix it but instead pass as much as possible. What more can anyone say about this?

Under pressure Flacco throws the ball like he’s afraid to get hit . He doesn’t look down the gun barrel so to speak anymore almost like a kid playing against grownups.

Brady does the same and has for years and he still goes to super bowls. He does also have 10 times the talent around him as he always has

Without the preseason, most teams except the top ones are not ready for the season. I think this is going to be the norm now. The first few games are going to be ugly for most teams

Maybe my observation is incorrect, but I think this has always been the case with the first 4 games of the season...even with the 4-5 game preseason. It's not uncommon for a team to go from loser to champion to loser to champion in the beginning of the season. And I don't mean a 2-2 record. I mean looking leaps and bounds better than most of the league and then looking leaps and bounds worse.

So far, the team has looked worse but managed to pull a win out of its arse. There is only one 0-3 team in the NFL. And if it weren't for 90 seconds of opportunities and good fortune against Cleveland, the Jets would've been the second. I think the Jets have more talent than most of the NFL. So this is on the coaching staff. The team will play better this season or the coaching staff will be replaced in the offseason. Hopefully going forward the will conduct better preseasons.

It’s just amazing how negative some fans are. I get being disappointed in the game, but saying the seasons over is SOJ material.

Our starting QB isn’t even playing yet. And we’re not out of September. Mailing it in already? To each his own.

Flacco can still throw the ball. Problem is, he doesn’t feel the rush coming and he can’t get outside the pocket. Two mandatory traits for any modern NFL QB.

I am generally negative in a joking way as I believe most of the guys here also are. a lot of us vent here that way. Remember I started that sticky thread here to explain to anyone who doesn’t understand, that most guys are joking here most of the time… or half serious. We are trained to expect the worst cause most times that’s what we get and while this regime is not responsible for the past 50 years, and I personally like JD and Saleh, we are still seeing the same things happening that have been happening forever. This past week rather than building on the previous happy ending, they let cincy march the field on the first 2 drives. That is a same old Jet thing to do

anyway, I was just asking you as one of the more positive guys on the site if you think we will beat Pittsburgh this week. I’m not trying to be a weenie or anything negative or positive.

i know what @Bigmoe would answer to that question, wondering if you have a more positive answer. I think we have better players but I wouldn’t bet on winning

Zach will not play this week due to shitty LT situation. Something will come up...... The Jets left his return date so open ended for a reason

I think the Jets have a shot against Pittsburgh. Especially if Zach Wilson is playing. I’ve seen enough of Flacco. He’s a statue in the pocket. Wilson has the ability to extend plays with his feet.

No TJ Watt this week, or Big Ben anymore. We can beat Pittsburgh with a better game plan than the stuff we showed against Cincinnati. And players still gotta make plays. If the D plays like it did on Sunday, we’re gonna lose.

i know what @Bigmoe would answer to that question,
Ok my answer
Mitch Trubisky is terrible
Probably headed to the bench for Kenny Pickett to see what they have there
Flacco is worse , he’s finished
Playing in the steel city is a tough place to play
I’m saying this is the worst team in trouble right now that we play on the schedules
And the Jets are still underdogs at + 3 1/2
Two bottom feeding teams
Do I think we win
You know my answer
But the upcoming part of the schedule will bury us if we’re not dead and buried by Sunday nite

“ Oh you Jet fans are
all the same “

My gut is telling me that either Trubisky or Pickett will play like a champion against us. I hope that it's wrong or at that least we can muster enough points to win. I don't want this team to go to 1-3.

I'm not as down on Saleh as I was last season. He swayed my opinion to favorable with his preparation for the Eagles and Bucs games last season. He knew the importance of both of those games and the coaching staff did their job. Had the '21 Jets and iota of talent, the would've won both games.

I'm fairly confident that he'll right the ship this season. But I'm expecting no less than .500 ball. And a loss against Pittsburgh would be a big step in the wrong direction. They would be ready to play with Christian Hackenburg at qb.
