Jets fuming Sam Darnold's 'seeing ghosts' comment made air

One day after a rattled Sam Darnold unwittingly told a national television audience he was "seeing ghosts" on the field, the New York Jets were seeing red.

The Jets were angry their quarterback's mic'd up comment was aired on ESPN's Monday Night Football.

"It bothers me, it bothers the organization," coach Adam Gase said Tuesday, 12 hours after a 33-0 loss to the New England Patriots. Gase acknowledged it's "part of the deal," coaches and players being mic'd for prime-time games, but he added: "Obviously, you never anticipate something like that happening. The fact that it did, it gives us pause to really cooperate anymore because I don't know how we can allow our franchise quarterback to be put out there like that."

Darnold played his worst game as a pro, committing five turnovers. In the second quarter, after his third turnover, he went to the sideline and said, "I'm seeing ghosts." The clip instantly went viral.

Essentially, Darnold admitted he was befuddled by the Patriots' defense -- an embarrassing moment, to be sure. He handled it well after the game, telling reporters he always tries to be honest with his coaches and that he needed to "see the field a lot better" against New England's blitz-heavy defense.

NFL Films determines which audio clips from mic'd up players are used on the air. The teams expect NFL Films to act as a gatekeeper, counting on its producer to disregard in-game comments that might cast teams and players in an unflattering light.

NFL Films had a representative at MetLife Stadium and cleared Darnold's "ghosts" remark for TV.

Neither the NFL nor ESPN, which has the freedom to decide which clips to use, had immediate comment on the matter.

Jets running back Le'Veon Bell rushed to Darnold's defense, writing on his official Twitter account that "the NFL screwed Sammy over."

The Jets were furious after the game. The Patriots, too, seemed stunned that Darnold's remark was allowed to air. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy asked reporters, "He really said that?"

Darnold was out of sync the entire game, throwing an interception on his first pass. He completed only 11 of 32 passes for 86 yards, including four interceptions. His passer rating was only 3.6, one of the worst in franchise history.

Gase said he expects Darnold to rebound. The coach saved his anger for NFL Films, although he didn't identify them.

"We'll be looking into that pretty hard," Gase said. "That's one of those things that I was really disappointed to hear about after the game. I don't know if I've ever seen that, where somebody that was mic'd up was basically ... a comment like that was allowed to air."

they are worried about the wrong thing...

the performance by this team is more pressing or is it just me?

Exactly right. Just an attempt to deflect and distract fro Darnold's (and the team's) awful play. No way in hell this was the first time any QB or other player had a comment come out.

bell's quote "there's a reason we never heard other QB's on the sideline frustrated like that before" is telling to me.. say what you want about deflection & distraction, because that's a legit point..

but the mother ****er that intentionally embarrassed darnold on the most embarrassing night of his career, (on national TV no less) just because, should be outed & ****ing fired!!

i have no issue with the organization putting someone on this to get that mother ****er shit canned!!

almost like putting your thumb on the scale trying to give up dirt on the kid to every DC/defensive player in the league!!

i'm hot over this!!

right. If you don't want to be picked on , show up for the game. even if it's only for a play or two. They would have been better off not going to the game at all

would they have played what brady said? " coach, I couldn't hear what you said the Jets would be doing on this play."

He is 22 years old. That is a baby in NFL years. The kid has size, talent, and moxie. Cut him a break.
Let's face it, put Sam under Bielicheck's tutelage and he will develop into a HOF quality QB over time.
OR since the Jets are the Jets.....
We do our best Kotite impression and the kid is running for his life, loses all confidence, and severely regresses.
If Joe Douglas is worth his salt, he called in the OC and said "Clean it up fast or you're gone"

Who thought for sure, that when Gase got cute and kept declining 2x the 5-yard penalty on 4th down, that Bielichek would finally tell Brady "go for it" to extend their lead to 40-0

if Belichick drafted Sam, he gets 2 handfulls of rings but the Jets drafted him so he becomes some other teams back-up after 3 years. Just like brady would have if the Jets drafted him.

I remember the dark days of the Jets fan board on the NYJ website. I think the fans were so outraged at the organization they scrapped the board because it was a lot of bad publicity for them and they were afraid it was going to affect ticket sales.
Sanchez was not very talented, but he was NOT the reason for the Jets downfall from the 09' 10' teams. That blame sits squarely on the Johnson's who are without a doubt the worst NFL owners in the league. If I recall correctly after the 10' season, management went the cheap route and started importing lower-cost players. It ruined those clubs. Fast forward to 2019, we let a pro bowl kicker and return man walk. That stupid decision cost us the opening Bills game. The decision to pick Gase over McCarthy is not looking good at this moment. I hope I'm wrong in the long run. I hope Joe Douglas is as talented as advertised because we are stuck with him for a long time.

The team is justified being upset by this. Obviously, getting the ship righted is more important. But this was complete BS by NFL Films and ESPN.

There was more wrong on those boards than that, a lot more...

Always wondered what happened to that message board. Never joined but would go over to read a few of the posters like ProfessorJet.

Gase is the OC,HC,and QB coach. Douglas doesn't have the authority to fire him. Hell, it could be the opposite with Gase having more say than Douglas in this messed up organization.
Declining the delay of game and false start penalties was the only thing Gase did right the entire game though.

On the bright side, Sam managed to turn a low point in his brief career into his first endorsement deal. Like many great athletes before him, Boxing champions, Olympic gold medalist, Super Bowl winners, Sam will be featured on the famous cereal box.
Not Wheaties......

Boo berry!!!!
