The Jets have agreed in principle for Robert Saleh, the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator for the past four seasons, to become their head coach.

Saleh will become the Jets' 20th head coach in franchise history and their 18th coach appointed to take Green & White reins before the start of a new season.

Under Saleh's direction in 2020, San Francisco had a top-10 defense in total yards (fifth), rush yards (seventh) and pass yards (fourth). In '19 San Fran finished second overall in the league in total defense — with its 281.8 yards/game allowed the best by the team since 1997 — and first in pass defense — with the 169.2 pass yards/game allowed coming in as the best in the NFL since Rex Ryan and Jets defense allowed 153.7 pass yards/game in 2009. After coaching up that 49ers unit, Saleh received The Sporting News' Coordinator of the Year award.

Similar rankings occurred in Saleh's previous pro stops in the previous 16 seasons. At Jacksonville from 2014-16 he was the Jaguars' linebackers coach, and the team improved to sixth overall and fifth vs. the pass in his final season with the Jags. From 2011-13 he was Seattle's defensive quality control coach focusing on LBs and the Seahawks defense rose to No. 1 in the league overall, vs. the pass and in scoring in his last year in the Great Northwest in 2013.

Saleh held three different titles in six seasons with Houston from 2005-10 and the Texans moved into the top half of the league in many defensive categories in 2009, his first of two seasons as assistant linebackers coach.

A native Michigander, Saleh grew up in Dearborn and started at TE for four seasons at Northern Michigan University. Before entering the pro coaching ranks, Saleh extended his Michigan roots with two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State and one at Central Michigan before a brief stop at the University of Georgia in 2005 before heading to Houston.

Beyond excited. Most excited I've been for a coaching hire since Rex. Look at quotes like this one from Richard Sherman a few weeks ago, I think:

“He has to get the Detroit job,” Sherman said, per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. “Homegrown. He’s a great leader of men. And he’s not stubborn. He doesn’t just think he has all the answers. He comes up with a great plan and evolves it with his players.”
And Sherman on Twitter after the hiring was announced:

How about this from Fred Warner:
"Best D.C. in the league," Warner told reporters right before the 49ers' final game of the season. "Just got so much respect for that guy. He's just such a smart mind and on top of that, just knowing exactly what he wants. He makes it crystal clear for everyone, black and white. We know exactly what to do on any given snap, no gray area.

"I love that guy. I know he's going to be a great head coach one day soon."

And if the Mike Lafleur rumors are true, that is exciting as well; the Shanahan style offense is exactly where I'd expect Sam Darnold to excel. To me, Sam D. has always looked his best on the move. Somehow he seems to see the whole field best that way and we've all seen him make great, accurate throws while on the run.

Guys, when was the last time we had a GM and Coach tandem like this to be excited about? I feel so confident about Joe D. bringing in the talent and Robert Saleh maximizing it on the field. Good days are coming! To paraphrase Pete Alonso, LFGJ!!! 😁

I'll guess that was 21 years and 10 days ago. Hopefully this one last more than a day! :batoverhead:

and by this hire the 49ers will be awarded 2021 & 2022 3rd round picks for developing a minority hire...

do not affect Jets picks these are compensatory picks created out of thin air by the league...

Finally the GM hires the the coach so we have a coach working for the GM who reports to the owner. Just like a a real NFL team! Now was that so hard?

Well Ill be damned! The Jets didnt allow a coach to go to the better teams so they could grab from trash heap! Im happy about Saleh, but thats only half. Jets needs to get the coaching staff and still has to Draft BYU QB Zack Wilson to sit behind Darnold next year. This way or new coach has a answer after Darnold . Saleh having a rookie QB like Zach Wilson to do what he wants in keeping the ball. Darnolds INTs are bad And the last Pats game was another cant see green or white when passing. Wasnt a green jersey in site when Darnold thew it to Pats. Cant have our coach start here with no future at QB. Zack Wilson draft him Jets to go with our new coach.
