Jets in contact with Ron Parker - DB - Chiefs

A lot of rumors linking Jets and Parker out there right now. He was a CB the Chiefs converted to safety to replace Berry when he went out. He had a great season at safety causing a lot of interest on the open market. I found a good article about him below, even if it has a Giants slant to it.

Ron Parker - DB - Chiefs
ESPN New York calls free agent S Ron Parker a "name to watch" for the Jets.
Parker has already been linked to the Jets, and is supposedly receiving interest from as many as seven teams.

Devin McCourty is the biggest prize in the free-agent safety market, but as the head of a thin class he will be extremely costly. That’s why the Giants are hedging their bets and looking at other potential replacements for Antrel Rolle.

One possibility that emerged on Saturday was Kansas City Chiefs safety Ron Parker, a speedy, 6-foot, 206-pounder who started 15 games last season. He began the season as a cornerback, but switched to safety to replace Pro Bowler Eric Berry, who was out at first with an ankle injury and later with Hodgkin lymphoma. The Giants were one of seven teams to express an interest in him in the first hours of free agency, according to an NFL source.

A product of tiny Newberry (S.C.) College – the same place the Giants found receiver Corey Washington – Parker ended up having a career season with 12 pass deflections and an interception. The high point was a November game where he played corner against Buffalo’s Sammy Watkins and held the star rookie to four catches for 27 yards even though he was targeted 10 times.

Parker is generally not mentioned among the top tier of free-agent safeties – a short list which mostly includes only McCourty and Denver’s Rahim Moore (both of whom interest the Giants) – but in this market he still should be able to get a deal worth $4-5 million per season. Many NFL agents believe McCourty’s deal will end up north of $9 million per season, with Moore’s deal falling somewhere in between.

Parker’s bottom line will be helped by the fact that seven teams had already expressed an interest on Day 1, including the Giants, Jets, Texans, Falcons, and Bucs. The Chiefs are apparently hoping to bring him back, too.

Meanwhile, word around the league was that the Giants were also looking for bargain pass rushers on the first day of free agency. The Giants reportedly expressed interest in Bucs DE Adrian Clayborn, a former first-round pick who missed all but one game of last season with a torn biceps. He actually missed most of two of the last four seasons with injuries, but had 7 ½ sacks as a rookie in 2011 and 5 ½ in 2013.

There wasn’t a lot of other news about the Giants on the first day of the “legal tampering” period, which began at noon on Saturday and ends at 4 p.m. Tuesday when free agents are finally allowed to sign contracts with other teams. That’s not surprising, because the first day is generally more important for the top-tier players and is more of a feeling-out day for everyone else.

Or as one NFL agent said, “The first day is for all the BS calls when everyone is interested in everybody. If they call back on Day 2, that’s when you know they’re serious.”

There was also no new news on any of the Giants’ 17 unrestricted free agents, many of whom seem destined to hit the open market on Tuesday afternoon. One exception could be safety Stevie Brown, whom the Giants had been trying to re-sign. They apparently would like to retain him and add a safety in free agency to go along with the two currently on their roster – Cooper Taylor and Nat Berhe.

I think saving on a safety like this would more allow for taking on a bigger salary for CB in Revis. This might be the financial strategy Mike is targeting. I only suggest this in seeing the Jets not being linked with McCourty. And he's now signed anyway.

Seeing the success that McCourty has enjoyed switching from CB to FS makes me wonder about Kyle Wilson and what if. From day 1 KW had difficulty playing with his back to the QB, but what if you turned him around and played him at S. I'm not saying the experiment would have been successful, but why not try it. He's a good athlete, appears bright, durable and is a decent tackler. To me this might be another example of Ryan not developing a player to his fullest capabilities.

Man, a division rival about to steal even the tier 2 free agents from under our nose. Does no one want out cap money?

Ron Parker - DB - Chiefs
According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins' interest in free agent DB Ron Parker is "quite real."
We keep seeing obvious agent-pushed tweets from reporters stating several teams have interest in Parker. This would seem to be the first team with a genuine intention of trying to him. Parker can play cornerback and safety and is an incredible athlete. He could start at corner in Miami.

Yeah I think that would be worth a shot. Wilson should be cheap enough.

I will be surprised if the Jets spend a lot of money on a S with all the other holes. Allen had a good year at S in 2013. Last year he was the best cover guy on the team. They tried to force him to CB. he didn't have the speed for it. Went back to S, but his head was spinning with all the change. Think he will be back to 2013 form or better at S this year.

Didn't like the Pryor pick last year, and he played as I thought he would. With that said he appears to be the perfect candidate for Bowles "big nickel" defense. Don't think S is a screaming need.

CB is another story though.
