The Jets are showing interest in Brian Hoyer, who threw for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with the Browns last season.

The Jets are looking for their next Michael Vick — a veteran QB who can compete with Geno Smith (but actually!) for the starting job — and a pair of former Patriots backups are names to watch. The Jets have inquired about both Browns free agent Brian Hoyer and Texans free agent Ryan Mallett, according to sources.

Neither of those names will electrify a fan base, but it’s a thin quarterback market and the Jets have to deal with the players available.

Hoyer started 13 games for the Browns last season but became certain to hit the open market when Cleveland signed veteran Josh McCown. Hoyer threw for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season, leading the Browns to a 7-6 record in games he started. He was eventually benched for Johnny Manziel in December.

Mallett was dealt by New England to Houston last year and was named the Texans’ starter in November. However, after just two starts he tore his pectoral muscle and was out for the year. In Mallett’s two starts the Texans were 1-1 and he threw for 400 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Jets could also end up playing quarterback carousel with Houston. The Texans have said they would like to re-sign Mallett, and are also interested in Hoyer, according to ESPN.com. Both Mallett and Hoyer have played under Texans coach Bill O’Brien with New England. Should the Texans sign Mallett and/or Hoyer, they could release Ryan Fitzpatrick who in turn could be another option for the Jets. GM Mike Maccagnan is familiar with Fitzpatrick, having been in Houston before joining the Jets. Fitzpatrick played relatively well for the Texans last season, earning a quarterback rating of 95.8.

A Jets reunion with Mark Sanchez, which wasn’t going to happen anyway, became an impossibility on Sunday when the quarterback reportedly re-signed with the Eagles.

ON AN ISLAND

The cornerback market is already looking thinner for the Jets than it did just a few days ago. And that only increases the pressure on Gang Green to land Darrelle Revis.

Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell told ESPN Sunday he is going to sign with the Eagles, and Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers will reportedly re-sign with San Diego. On Saturday word got out that Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson would reportedly re-sign with Houston.

The Jets can’t afford to do what they did last year — strike out on cornerbacks — so the next couple of days will be particularly nerve-wracking for Jets fans waiting to see who the team lands.

Of course, the biggest fish of all is still out there. Revis is technically still on the Patriots, but New England is expected to decline the cornerback’s $20 million option for 2015. The Patriots have until Monday to make that decision. Should the Jets sign Revis, it would massively improve their beleaguered secondary. The News reported last week that owner Woody Johnson was involved in discussions with Maccagnan about pursuing the elite corner.

Should the Jets miss on Revis, they would have to settle for an option that most would consider a tier below the corners that have already found homes. One choice would be Antonio Cromartie, another former Jet who had a good season with the Cardinals last season. Other candidates could be the Packers’ Daven House, the Browns’ Buster Skrine or 49ers CBs Chris Culliver or Perrish Cox.

BUFFALO SOLDIER

Bilal Powell could defect from the Jets to join his old coach.

The Jets would like to re-sign the impending free agent running back, but think Powell is leaning toward a reunion with Rex Ryan in Buffalo, according to sources.

Powell, 26, is considered a jack-of-all trades who is useful on third-down because of his pass blocking ability. Powell's best season came in 2013 when he rushed 176 times for 697 yards and one touchdown along with 272 receiving yards.

The Jets are lining up contingency plans should Powell go elsewhere. Patriots running back Shane Vereen would be a potential target for the Jets if the team lost Powell.

In addition, Bills running back C.J. Spiller, out in Buffalo after the team traded for LeSean McCoy, told the Daily News in January that a reunion with Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey would be a "perfect match."

Elsewhere the Jets have also inquired about Cowboys right tackle Jermey Parnell, according to a source. It's interesting that the Jets have inquired on a right tackle considering they already have one: Breno Giacomini, who was signed as a free agent a year ago. It's unclear what the plan would be if the team did decide to sign Parnell or another right tackle

Both are at least something of an upgrade, particularly Hoyer. I have concerns about Mallett, but he has great physical skills for a pro system.

Hoyer is an upgrade? His comp%, TD/INT ratio, and QBR were all worse than Geno's last year...I'd consider it a bit of a stretch to call adding Hoyer an upgrade of any kind...

Then let Geno prove it and beat him out, legit.

I'm good I guess with any of the 3 QB's mentioned. Both Fitzpatrick and Hoyer are decent place holders. Could get the Jets to the playoffs, but very unlikely win a Super Bowl. Mallett might have some potential, or he might be a bust.

The CB situation is starting to worry me a bit.

My fear is that the Jets are hell bent to get Revis, and Revis and Beli have reached an agreement, and are sitting back laughing while the Jets let these other CB's walk.

The good news is that Revis is to much of a mercenary to let stupid money walk away.

If I'm the Jets I get Culliver, and Cro to agreements tomorrow.

Gonna miss Powell. Thought he brings a lot to the table. Not a star, but solid

I like Fitzgerald, but only if he is a placeholder and a guy to teach a young QB about making reads and progressions. I think he's great at that, while limited physically.

If the Jets got Mariota, I'd love Fitzpatrick. If they sign him and keep Geno, and don't do much else, then I'm skeptical. If they get a Hoyer, Mallett, or Foles, Fitzpatrick isn't coming here, anyway.

Jimmy Miller for Sirius thinks Hoyer can still be a player in this league. Last season was his first year he was groomed and prepped to be a #1 , and Miller thinks he had one down period and they flipped the switch. He never had a chance to fight his way out of it but he felt he had the skillsets to be successful. So there are some who believe in him. Im just saying he hasn't shown yet that he can be a #1 , even if some scouts still think he can. Will be interesting to see if Gailey looks at him as a better Fitzpatrick when he got his hands on him.

I think we have to trust Gailey looking at Mariota, Mallet, and Hoyer if that's all we really get to pick from (Winston, Foles and Bradford are probably lowest probability to get here, even if they're our most desired targets...not saying we dont get them, just saying least likely).

This is a good point.

Because the Jets sign any of these QB's doesn't exclude them from signing Mariota. Winston is my favorite QB in this draft, but I also think Mariota has a very high ceiling, if used in the right offense, and brought along properly. I think our friend Gailey is an elite QB guru. He has in the past made chicken soup out of chicken s.....Well you now what I mean.

I've seen the Jets pass on some great QB's in the past............................

Hopefully Gailey and his team have a white board session with Mariota and when they leave the meeting I am sure Gaily and crew will give a thumbs up or down. I trust him to pick his QB. He's done a lot with a little historically. He knows who fits his system and how to fit his system to his players.

Hey Seth

Hi Manish

You know the paper is demanding 750 words about the Jets for Monday and we both don't know sh*t and, because of you, neither Maccagnan nor Bowles will have anything to do with us....

I have an idea Seth....we'll throw together some fabricated garbage naming every possible free agent QB in the league, especially all the former Patriots and write that league sources tell us the Jets are hot on the heels.

Even the ones crappier than Smith, Manish? Will the editors and readers buy our bullsh*t?

Of course Seth, they will buy anything especially if we include ALL the former Belichick guys....I bet Benigno and Evans will be calling for an appearance within 30 minutes.

Sounds good, Manish...let's do it.

I hope they are both signed by the Texans, so we are forced to do something smarter. Our efforts should be focused on acquiring Foles or Glennon

Please NO! I'd rather the Jets stick with Geno then either one of these guys. That includes Fitzgerald also. If the Jets don't make this phila trade then it makes since to get either of these guys as BACK UPS. I guess they would push Geno or Mariota for the starting position. I honestly don't think they would beat Geno or Mariota out. So what's the point really? If they do pull off this trade for Foles then this really makes no since because these back-ups would never see the field unless Foles got hurt. I guess these are insurance cases but you can't find better insurance cases then this?

Just to add another name to the QB front, the Niners are putting CK on the trading block.

http://sfo.247sports.com/Bolt/Report-49ers-put-QB-Colin-Kaepernick-on-trading-block-36076777

This shakes up the landscape.

And is it any surprise the Frickin' Eagles are in on him too? Sheez.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Certainly an upgrade over Geno. I could see the Jets inquiring about this. Big development. CK really struggled with adapting to what defenses took away from him (first option). I'd get the film out and ask why myself SF is so willing to unload him.

As for backup, it speaks volumes that Houston and the Jets are looking at Hoyer over Mallett. He seems to be the hot backup target in spite of some of his inconsistency in Cleveland last year. He should get at least one free pass for playing there as that place was a dumpster fire.

Hoyer a Texan

Brian Hoyer - QB - Browns
The Texans have reached a deal with Brian Hoyer, according to NBC4's Dianna Marie Russini.
Aside from maybe the Jets or Bills, no team was more desperate for a quarterback than the Texans. Hoyer isn't a game-changer, but he's about the best Houston could do in a thin quarterback market. It's still possible the Texans could bring back Ryan Mallett and have him compete with Hoyer for the starting job. It's been reported by the New York Post that the Jets would likely pick up whichever quarterback Houston decides to discard, likely Mallett or Ryan Fitzpatrick. The latter of those two is still under contract.
