I never knew that??? This article from 2012...Mike Tannenbaum recalls 'dynamic, smart' Jim Harbaugh in 2009 interview for Jets job

NEW ORLEANS -- One of the coaches in Super Bowl XLVII was once a candidate for the Jets' head coaching job.

That would be the 49ers' Jim Harbaugh, who made the jump to the NFL head coaching ranks in 2011. Back in 2009, when the Jets were searching for a head coach and Harbaugh had just completed his second season at Stanford, the club secretly interviewed Harbaugh during a West Coast trip that also included a meeting with Russ Grimm in Arizona.

Former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum's impression of Harbaugh in that interview: "Dynamic. Smart. Could light up a room."

The Jets, though, hired Rex Ryan that year, who led the team to AFC Championship Games in his first two seasons but has missed the playoffs the past two years.

Harbaugh has been quickly successful in his first two seasons in the NFL, taking the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game last year and the Super Bowl this year.

When the Jets interviewed Harbaugh, he had a 9-15 record in two seasons at Stanford after three seasons as head coach at the University of San Diego. He had a 15-year NFL playing career as a quarterback but his only coaching experience at the professional level was two years as an offensive assistant for the Raiders. The perception was he may have been still relatively green to come to the NFL.

"It was one of those things where I think everyone kinda felt like – we felt good about Rex, I think he felt good about where he was," Tannenbaum said this week during a round of interviews. "I can’t speak for Jim. That wouldn't be fair to me to say. It was just one of those things where both parties just went their respective ways."

Has this organization ever made a good decision? ? I'm starting to believe this is Joe Namath fault.

First I hear of it is this year. I recall reading an article that said that we probably will not hire him bc Woody didn't like Harbaugh when he first interviewed him. This story kind of goes against that.

Here's the article I was talking about. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2014/12/24/7446335/report-jim-harbaugh-unlikely-to-go-to-jets

Pete Thamel of SI says the Jets are an unlikely destination for Jim Harbaugh.

Given that Harbaugh rebuilt two teams into powers since that interview six years ago, maybe an owner would look back and realize he was wrong.

At any event, Harbaugh feels and has always felt like a longshot. It would require the Jets to pull off a very complex deal without any sort of leaks while not giving up too much. That sounds like a fridge too far.

The Jets and Harbaugh sound like any number of John Idzik free agency courtships. There was an initial vague story about the Jets possibly having interest without much action to follow.

Like Harbaugh or not, I tend to think this report is in all likelihood accurate.

Not necessarily. If he's the man for the job that Casserly and Wolf think then we should get him. An interview from six years ago should not mean anything. He now has the NFL resume to overcome that interview.

I mean I doubt he would want another interview here coaches are prideful people. We passed on him once already.

Harbaugh is probably a pretty tough interview. Not sure he would really be a good fit for the Jets. More then likely he would have been fired 2 years ago

Well he had a great first 3 years but if the 49'ers are looking to dump him after 1 7-9 or 8-8 year depending on Sunday, he must be a real prick to deal with..At least Rex was lovable..LOL
