Jets’ Petty, Hackenberg get equal first teams reps

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles gave equal first team reps to quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg during practice on Wednesday in anticipation for their Week 8 meeting with the Cleveland Browns.

After practice, Bowles said will use those reps and the ones to come later this week to determine which of those two will be Ryan Fitzpatrick’s backup.

The power of deduction suggests Petty will eventually get the nod. He has been in the system for a full season and displayed what coaches called important strategic improvements during his showing in their offense over four preseason games this summer.

Hackenberg, on the other hand, is a rookie who even team officials are publicly stating is not nearly ready to assume a starting NFL offense.

The one question that could put that order in doubt is how well Petty has rehabbed from the shoulder injury he acquired in the exhibition finale. Though that looks to be in the past, as he has taken part in practices for over a week now.

...so hackenberg is now competing with petty for the backup job?? really?? really??

the same hackenberg who has been essentially "redshirted" since training camp??

yeah, bowles isn't trying to cover up his mishandling of the non backup QB competition, competition..

who's kidding who?? if petty has finally recovered from the worst "bruised" shoulder ever, he wouldn't be splitting reps with hackenberg this week.. my two cents anyway.....

This says how the front office feels about either Petty or Hack.

I really hope it reflects what they think about Hack.

Why not split the team reps? Have Petty and Hack practice with the 1st team unit. Their time will come soon.

I don't think they doubt Bryce's ability, it may be that he is fragile and that Hack is one hit away from stepping in? Until Petty can prove other wise

If this is how this regime is developing our young guns, so be it. It's been a long time we haven't even had a process of helping a Rookie or 2nd year player groomed the right way. Hopefully FItz can continue his play from Sunday and help this team get to .500. If not then we will see one of these guys in there rather quicker than expected.

I'd rather the organization following their plan than to expedite the process just to appease the masses and create a farther set back, just so that the same fans clamoring for one of these players to play on the pitch now, can gather their pitch forks and go after the QB and GM when they fail.

Give it time fellas. Their time will come in an ordily way. Not the "REX" way.

Geno was the backup, and now he's gone for the year. It doesn't surprise me to see the team looking at both unknowns as potential #2's for the time being. We don't have a choice anymore: we've gotta speed up the process because of Geno's injury.

I think some people are assuming that Petty's closer to a sure thing than he really is. He could just as easily be a bust as a revelation.

they are giving both equal reps to both... listen Geno was in for one half of football and sideline on one play for the rest of the year...

this regime doesn't like to tip their hand on anything...

but my feeling is Petty is the number two in this game with getting Hack's feet wet if FizzleMagic gets hurt we would not have to sign a veteran off the streets to be the backup they would roll with these two on the depth chart...

Nothing to see here... This was just a way to get Hackenberg extra reps to guage his progress... Petty will be the backup and will be the first in line to take over for Fitz this year.... But this gives the Jets CS and opportunity to see what is sticking with Hack and where his progress is......

With that small chance the light switch went on and he is ready..... Not likely....

Just gauging progress guys.

This. I loved the Hackenberg pick--yes I'm the 1 guy. Look at Dak, Kesler, etc. I doubt most fans have seen Hackenberg play, with the exception of highlights from the Temple game. This kid isn't a 3 year project. Letting him take reps with the 1's may give him confidence and let him take the next step. If Fitz sucks, and the season is lost, I wouldnt be suprised if Fitz becomes the 3 and Hack is the 2, possibly 1. Fans make this big deal out of mechanics. It is footwork. Peyton had backwards footwork out of college. This isn't a bust pick. To me, it is Chan/Bowles taking their time to ensure he is ready.

Hack has everything you want in a franchise QB... Size, Smarts. Arm Strength, great release... Watched him play a lot at Penn St... I like the pick as well, though I'll be honest I think Petty is better, but his mechanics are off because his footwork is awful. Definitely fixable... Hack comes across as very moldable so with the right coaching I see a QB problem on our hands in the next year or 2 and not our Normal problem.. I think Macc picked 2 great QB's that will be very good starters in the NFL..

too much made of this - they need to decide who is the #2 - they rationally decided to get some updated data as best they can by giving both some reps. Simple and not stupid.

This is something i always enjoyed from how Ron WOlf operated in Green Bay. Keep Acquiring players at the most important position until you get it right.

If we have learned anything about Bowles is that he is patient and probably conservative to a fault. I don't think it has anything to do with liking or disliking a particular player. JMO.

+1. I agree with you on this. I am still reserving judgement on whether or not he is a good HC but he and Mac are both mushroom "feed sh*t and keep 'em in the dark" guys.
