Jets QB Zach Wilson Learning Virtually

The Jets' 22-year-old rookie quarterback Zach Wilson has been learning from three Super Bowl champions of late -- one in person and two virtually. While recovering from his PCL sprain, he's been eyeballing 36-year-old Joe Flacco's process throughout the week. Flacco, who was acquired in a trade with the Eagles in November.

"Even if I could never ask him a question, just seeing how he goes through his process is probably the most beneficial out of anything. Just seeing how he approaches practice and in certain plays, what his mindset is," Wilson said. "I think just seeing how he thinks about something, for me, has been huge. … He does a really good job of making a very complex thing very simple. And so, I feel like I've learned a lot and just the way he approaches something. You can see the experience that he's had over his 14 years of just playing ball and how quickly he can eliminate. He's seen every look possible. So, it's cool to be able to just kind of hear some of those from him and just see how he plays ball."

The virtual signal-callers are Bucs' QB Tom Brady and Packers' QB Aaron Rodgers. Wilson tries to watch their film throughout the season and he went back to watch how Brady dissected the Eagles defense in Week 6.

"I thought it was really cool to see kind of how [Brady] went through his whole process, how he navigated the pocket, different things like that," Wilson said. "Aaron is another one that we watch a lot of the time, too. In season, I always try and do that. Just to be like, OK, here's what I'm doing. Here's what these guys are doing in the similar type of offense and what things stand out to me, what things that they consistently do each and every play to just be a quarterback."

In Wilson's return against the Texans last week, he threw for 145 yards, 0 TDs and an interception while completing 58.3% of his passes (14 of 24) in the victory. He wasn't pleased with his performance, didn't blame it on rust and was happy with his pre-snap reads as was OC Mike LaFleur. Gearing up to face a Philadelphia defense that is good at applying pressure to opposing QBs, Wilson wants to be more decisive in Week 13.

"If I'm out there, we go to certain coverage, I'm looking at a route, how soon can I tell if that has a chance to win or not?" he said. "And then can I say yes or no quick enough and just be decisive and get off of it. The last thing you want to do is pass something up and it ended up being open. So, you have to be decisive. You got to be able to just make your mind up and move on and I think the coaches have done a really good job of just stressing that with me and making sure that process of just be decisive.

"If you pass it up and it ends up winning, then great, you learned for next time. That's been a big focus and I think I've improved a lot obviously since the beginning of the year in each and every single game, this week in practice specifically. So, now, it's just how can I apply that to the game and then just keep working each week?

I like everything Zach is saying here. But if Zach cant put any of it into use in a game little by little its a waste. Learn it, use it,do it! Worked with guys like this, always talking about they have learned this or that and never able to use it. One of 2 things =no production, full of crap or cant do it and only talk a big show. 3rd thing is...stop talking about it and Do It!

I wasn’t a Zach fan at all pre-draft but training camp and pre-season changed that. I think we have our guy but he has to prove it. At least show it more than one game and the only game he’s truly done it so far was against the Titans. I’m giving him till next year before I start thinking otherwise.

I think that is a reasonable attitude and I agree.

Watching it is a lot easier than doing it. If he was watching those 3 during his time off then I guess he didn’t learn anything or understand what he was watching. He will be given ample chances to make progress.

I just think its ludicrous to think that Wilson will be a bust after only a short time in the league. There are a lot of very good if not great QB's who took a couple of years either before they played or 'became' great. JMHO, but I think patience is in order here.

IMO Zach is more of a riverboat gambler, Favre type of QB. I hope he has learned from Flacco.
He has the tools Zach, the arm, the head, the desire to make it. He just has to find his own NFL groove and give us the wins ,

Patience is given when progress is being made.

The kid has the tools in his skill set and the desire to want to be better . I happened to believe that he has a solid coach and scheme that will allow him the chance for success.
It’s all up to him and I think he will get there .

It doesn't matter, to me anyway, how he learns if he can't apply what he learns to his game effortlessly. In today's NFL there isn't time for a QB to think. The action must be instinctive and fast. I believe he has the ability to be that kind of QB without trying to be a copycat. He needs to learn to recognize what the defense is going to do pre-snap and react accordingly and fast. With 32 different defenses in the NFL that will take time. I'm willing to give him that time as long as I continue to see improvement.

All of this CAN'T CAN'T CAN'T talk.

He's a freaking ROOKIE on a 2-14 team from last year.

How many rookie QBs ever won a SB as a Rookie? Oh yeah. That's right. 99% of them struggle and most don't even see the playing field.

Year #2 and year #3 is when I'll JUDGE Zach Wilson.
Sorry but he plays he gets a report card and as of right now it’s a D . However, he has the rest of the season to improve and I believe he can . I can live with a C+ this season.

He’s got receivers . He’s got to learn how to read a defense and throw accurately to them 1st . A franchise QB is supposed to make everyone around him better, not the other way around .
We drafted this kid with the 2nd pick in the 1st round and 2 kids we signed off the scrap heap made his same teammates look like actual football players .
Time for the hero to play like a hero and stop having Jet fans make excuses for him. Zach Wilson has been the worst of the 4 QBs to take the field for the Jets this year and it’s not his teammates fault .

Oh yeah. He has great receivers. Just ask bust Denzel Mims and FA hype Corey Davis lol.

He has crap at Center, TE and OT too.

Where is his Franchise LT Mekhi Becton? Lol.

You wanna make a reference towards Mike White and Joe Flacco? Um. They've been in the league for YEARS now.

Zach is a freaking Rookie behind a CRAP Offense that went 2-14 last year.

Stop with the excuses? No. Stop being BLIND.
No need to get personal. We’re having a conversation with a difference of opinions. I want what I believe you want for our team . We just have different options on how to achieve that .

With that I will stop
