Great points, but are those the circumstances during these practices?

I know at the combine they made it sound like he was missing wide open receivers 10 yards away . . .
I'm sure he had a ton of bad habits from trying to not die on the field. The kid had only one real college year, how many qbs play 4 seasons under good coaches and still bring in bad habits. He's not our savior, he's a terrific project.

I completely understand where this kid is coming from and have tempered my expectations accordingly.

That doesn't change the fact that is SOUNDS like he struggles with the short pass more than the long one. To someone who has never played the QB position that sounds strange -- backwards even. I'd find it hard to believe he only has "bad habits" on some throws but not on others.

I'm fine with there being no rational answer -- for all I know it's not even an accurate assessment of his skill set (no pun intended). But I come here to learn from people more knowledgeable than me, so I just throw all my questions out there and see which ones stick . . .

You don't need to defend yourself, you asked a question, I offered a thought.
I hope I didn't come off snarky. I'm far from a guru trust me.

I did offer a thought on short throws too. It's not the expert analysis, but from what I know, the nfl short pass is a paradox. Remember in most offenses the qb is throwing to a spot before the play even develops. If protection holds up, you can set your feet and let it fly.

On a short pass, you have traffic, coverage in close quarters, giant defensive linemen blocking the lanes, and most importantly it's bang bang play. Coverage is closing in so you zip it in, but then it's too hard to catch. To me, it's like using a cannon to trim a rose bush, and it's an art form.

More importantly, hrs doing everything on the fly right now, and they're just doing a rush job to get him reps.

I know about the inaccuracy issues -- it just seems like they're specific to the short throws, as opposed to an overall inability to consistently put the ball where it needs to be.

Personally I hope that's the case -- if he's gonna struggle with accuracy, let's limit it to the short stuff and find another way to get that kind of yardage. OTOH there's not too many ways to get the ball 50 yards down the field if it isn't coming out of the QBs hand . . .

Short and intermediate throws take timing and touch. He obviously has work to do in both of those areas which is why he is struggling. His footwork is bad which is causing problems with his release which causes issues with accuracy and touch. They will fix his footwork which will help him tremendously with the issues he is having.

A year holding a clipboard watching Fitz, and a year working on fundamentals/technique and developing a rapport with receivers will do wonders for the young QB.
