Jets’ safety on his regression: ‘I’ve got nothing to prove’

If you had to identify a Jets player at the beginning of this season who was primed for a breakout year, safety Calvin Pryor would have been an understandable choice.

Pryor is in his third season. He seemed to improve in 2015 in coach Todd Bowles’ system, and Pryor appeared ready to take the next step toward realizing the potential he showed when the team drafted him in the first round in 2014.

But you would have been wrong.

Pryor has not progressed this season. If anything, he has taken a step backward from last year. He has no interceptions and no sacks, despite being a frequent blitzer. His only impact play has been a forced fumble. He has delivered some big hits, but he also has shown an inability to play in space and has been a liability in coverage.

On Thursday, Pryor said the season has not gone the way he had hoped, but did not give a very expansive answer when asked why he thinks things have gone wrong. He said he is not worried about how fans view him.

“I’ve got nothing to prove to the fans [or] the outside world,” Pryor said. “It’s all about me. I’ve got to look myself in the mirror. That’s all I’m worried about.”

If he is being honest with himself when he is looking in the mirror, he has to be upset with the way he has played. While Landon Collins has become a star at safety for the Giants, Pryor has been a disappointment for the Jets. The high hopes for him coming out of Louisville have shrunk. There is a question of whether the Jets even will pick up his fifth-year option for 2018, a decision they must make this spring.

“He’s made some strides,” Bowles said. “He’s had some good games. He’s had some not-so-good ballgames. But from an experience standpoint, mentally, yes, physically, out of position at times. There are some things that he’s still growing on as a player, which is getting better, but he’s making some strides.”

Coaches chose their words carefully this week when asked about Pryor.

Pro Football Focus has Pryor rated as the 81st safety out of 91 graded. He ranks 86th in coverage.

Still, Pryor had an interesting answer when asked if he has progressed as much as he had hoped this year.

“I’m in a comfortable place,” Pryor said.

“When I look back at [Pryor], early on I thought he had a slow start, but as the season went on, I thought he kind of really made some plays and kind of steadied out,” Rodgers said.

Pryor, 24, agreed he started off poorly.

“The first couple of games I got off to a slow start,” Pryor said.

Why?

“I have no idea,” he said.

Pryor is part of a secondary that has allowed 12 passes of 40 yards or more this season, tied for fourth-most in the NFL.

“It is what it is at this point,” Pryor said. “I think we’ve gotten better as a group. There’s going to be plays that are made out there on the football field. Everybody gets paid to play this game. We’re playing with the best of the best, so things are going to happen.”

There was another site that had another web page where the FO is thinKing about trading him after the season... I hope they do and can get a 4th because he is not worth more... bad attitude, poor play outside the box and even when he is in the the box his play is not that great.

Time to get rid of all the underperforming stiffs on this team and get people in her with a FB IB, good attitude (williams and lee as examples).

i have never had the pleasure of rooting for a more unlikable/gutless group of jet players/coaching staff in my entire life..

this season has really tested my belief of why i should continue to invest so much of my time & energy into this cluster**** of an organization..

keep williams, petty, hackenberg, powell & maybe gailey.. as for the handful of other guys that still could be helpful, restructure, or GFY!!

the rest of the 2016 jets needs to GTFO with bowles' jock sniffing ass being the first to go.. enough of this amazing horse shit!!

When he looks in the mirror? that asshole should just be looking at the game tapes to realize he is doing absolutely nothing to help the Jets win games.
He's a safety that can't blitz, can't cover anyone that runs a route and is usually the third guy in on tackling the running back, maybe.
I'd trade him for whatever you can get for him, which won't be a lot, then play R.Miles or Middleton at that spot.

It's amazing how there were so many players "on the rise" after last season. Pryor, Sheldon Richardson, Skrine, Mauldin, even Fitzpatrick was supposed to be productive.

And they all took a huge dump. I question how prepared this team was all season. Even with Revis, you don't just get old that quickly. He fell off a cliff, and that speaks to conditioning and preparedness.

And that's why I'm not confident in this coaching staff. Say what you want about disciplinarians, but I'd rather have a Coughlin or Parcells-type here right about now.

Meet Mainejet playing devil's advocate...... I think you all are being unfair. Look back at his rookie season? Rex Ryan forced him to play FS because the secondary was so lacking talent. He stunk at it and now this is his 2nd year playing SS, what he was drafted to be? He had one very encouraging seas on and one very bad one. He's been saddled with a bad HC the last two seasons. Why not cut the kid some slack? Objectively speaking, I would like to see Pryor being coached by another competent HC and then draw conclusions from there....

I actually would like to see the Jets keep giving him a chance. I'd be hesitant to throw away any young player who has shown some level of talent and ability. The vets, fine. But if a guy has been young and inconsistent, give him more time.

Fans almost always want disciplinarians coaching their team. It's what makes the Rex phenomenon fascinating. He's the antithesis of a disciplinarian, yet he's quite popular with many fans.

Before the 2014 draft someone asked Pryor where the draft advisory board told him he is projected, and he said maybe late first round, but possibly the second round. That answer stuck with me because we were picking 18th and Pryor was being mentioned as a possibility. When Idzik pulled the trigger on Pryor at 18, that answer rang in my ears and it gnawed at me.

For that reason I couldn't get excited about the pick when we made it, that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Idzik's shit drafts have ruined this team for many years to come. No one he drafted has stuck on this team and those
who remain Sheldon and Pryor have such an unlikable attitude that make it hard to root for them. His best picks are Winters and Enunwa.
