Breno Giacomini likely to miss opener, Jets seek help at right tackle

FLORHAM PARK. N.J. -- For the first time in 11 years, the New York Jets will open the season with a new left tackle, Ryan Clady. Barring a miracle, they'll have a new right tackle, too, because incumbent Breno Giacomini still is battling a back problem.

Coach Todd Bowles acknowledged for the first time that Giacomini may not be ready for the Sept. 11 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"I have no idea," Bowles said on Thursday. "It's getting close and he hasn't done anything."

Giacomini was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list at the start of training camp and still isn't practicing. With only six practices remaining before the opener, Giacomini is a long shot. By his own estimation, he's at "80-percent speed." On Wednesday, he was able to get into a three-point stance and practice basic blocks against air.

"It's not where I need to be to be on the field," said Giacomini, speaking to reporters for the first time since the injury.

Giacomini called it a lower-back strain, saying it occurred at the June minicamp. The worst pain, he said, was over the July 4 weekend. He didn't say how it happened, but it apparently occurred while lifting weights. He said it's not a disc-related issue, although sources described it as more than a strain. He declined to comment when asked if he has received epidural injections.

This is a concern for the Jets.

The in-house options are Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale, neither of whom has started an NFL game. They've been rotating throughout the preseason, trying to win the trust of the coaches.

"They've been going back and forth," Bowles said. "This game [on Saturday] will be big. [The Giants] have two premier defensive ends over there. It'll be good to see them against those type of people."

Bowles also confirmed they're exploring options outside the organization. Aside from the quarterback situation, the right-tackle search will be one of the main storylines as teams cut their rosters over the next 10 days.

"We'll consider it," Bowles said of outside help. "We've talked about it and we'll continue to talk about it. We'll see how [Ijalana and Qvale] come along and see if we're going to add anybody."

One team to watch is the San Francisco 49ers, who have two experienced right tackles -- Trent Brown and Anthony Davis. A former first-round pick, Davis has 71 career starts, but he's working behind Brown after returning to the team following a one-year "retirement." The 49ers are giving Davis a chance to play right guard, so maybe he won't be expendable.

Any decision will be based, in large part, on Giacomini's prognosis. Initially, it was projected as a six- to eight-week injury. He just passed the eight-week mark, so he may not be far away from returning. The question is, do they carry him on the 53-man roster or place him on regular-season PUP, meaning he'd have to miss a minimum of six games.

"Is it a possibility? Probably," Giacomini said. "It's something I don't want, but that's something I can't control.

"Right now, I'm considered day-to-day," he said. "I don't know when I'll be back, but I'm progressing."

This has DISASTER written all over it. I question Mac for neglecting the OL to take a little twerp LB. Every Jets fan knew the OL needed an overhaul. It has reported on and written in the newspapers for weeks prior to the draft. How do you dare do something like this when you have finally rounded up some very good offensive weapons????? When you have the kind of talent that the Jets do on offense, you MUST get a good OL to guard those players and allow them to do what they do best.

JMO, but I think Mac had every intention of selecting an OL in the 1st round, but he simply didn't plan well enough when things did not go in the draft the way he had figured. He ultimately panicked and made a very rash decision to take Darron Lee.

I simply do not like the pick and really never have. I do not believe he has the size to be successful in a 3-4 formation. I think he's a Safety masquerading as a LB and nothing more.

The ONLY way I see Darron Lee becoming an important part of this defense is if Bowles decides to switch to a 4-3. That only makes sense given all of the talent they have along the DL, but Todd Bowles is too dumb to realize that. He very stubbornly stuck to a 3-4 formation even last season when everyone was dying to see all of their DL talent on the field at once. OR he switches Darron Lee to Safety. Darron Lee has GREAT size as a Safety. As a linebacker he's a joke that will inevitably cost this team this season.

Meanwhile, by going down the road of the abortion that the Darron Lee pick is, he completely ignored the OL. What Mac essentially did was erect this massive, beautiful home with no foundation. So inevitably the entire building will fall. The OL, being the foundation, is in serious defect right now and this massive beautiful home that Mac built is going to burn and crash to the ground.

Now I may have used some very extreme words to describe the Jets current state of affairs, but I cannot possibly imagine no one else having very real concerns about how the season will play out knowing that the OL could, and probably will, fail the offense this season???

Wait - so Idzik gets a free ride for bringing in Giacomini, but Maccagnan gets bashed for not replacing him?

For the time being, i would mind taking a flyer on Jake Long. Maybe he (like Ryan Clady) is completely healed from his past injuries.

The neglect of the OL was a collective effort. Idzik started it and Mac has allowed it to fester on his watch. FA, the draft???? They are there to be used. If Mac knew he wasn't going to use FA to grab a suitable replacement for Breno, he should have known that drafting a starting RT in the draft was NECESSITY......

That actually sounds like a great idea. How long has he been out of football???

At the same time, if he had drafted a RT, at best arguably the third most important OL position, he would have been bashed for taking a RT so early by the same Jets fans who bash him for not addressing the OL.

I'd rather either work out a deal with the Niners, who are deep at RT, or wait to see which veteran RTs are late cuts.

If some how can swing a trade for Anthony Davis, we'd be set. Though i doubt San Fran would move him....But again, Chip Kelly likes to trade every one, so its always an option.

They might hold onto him, but that is a pretty valuable asset to leave sitting on the bench.

And HOW is that possible???? It's not like everyone and their brother didn't know the Jets needed OL help. It's no secret. So you think they would bash him for taking a player that was perfectly necessary??? That's doesn't make sense. Now, if the GM had decided to take a situational and very undersized LB and completely a gigantic need for the offense???? Well, that right there could get you in a lot of trouble from fans.....There's a million questions they could ask about the logic behind this. And if by chance Lee turns out to be a disappointment?!? Jets fans will be screaming from the rooftops about Mac ignored a massive need and went with a two down, situational, undersized LB...........

I absolutely think Jets fans would have bashed the Jets for picking a RT. It's the way Jets fans work. I can hear it now.

"You don't waste a first round pick on a RT."
"SOJ. If you waist (sic) a pick on some dumb lineman, make it a left tackle or something."

There are plenty of Jets fans who would bash the Jets, no matter what they do.

Not really sure Idzik got a free ride on anything. Seem to remember planes flying over practice, and his being fired in 2 years. Very rare for a GM

I actually wanted a T in the first 2 rounds. problem was, as MJ said, things didn't go as planned , and IMO all the T's with a first round grade were gone at 20. Fans would have squawked with a RT in top ten, but if there was a good one there at 20 most fans would have been good with it IMO

Well, in another thread, it seems like his decision to sign Giacomini was getting a bit of a free ride, yes.

Well, first of all, if Mac is worried about what the fans think he should do then he simple shouldn't have the job to begin with.

What Mac should do is what is best for the team. I do not believe he did that this offseason for the reasons I just laid out. He has thereby left himself open to criticism. There's always going to be Jets fans that don't like their pick, no one should care, but he also should not be setting himself for the MASSES to start criticizing him. By drafting Darron Lee and ignoring the OL I believe he could be sending himself down the road of coming under fire. Especially if the defense is not much better than it already was and the offense fails big time due to the OL and causes the Jets to have a losing season. All of those factors will result in the fan base not being very appreciative of Mac....

Or what about trading down? Accumulating more picks and taking Jason Spriggs who was available in the 2nd round? Or maybe just packaging our 2nd rounder to move up a few spots in the 2nd round? And like I posted, Mac knew he needed a Tackle. He should have said, if I can't get a Tackle through FA, I'd BETTER get one in the draft. It appears on the outside that he didn't have a plan.....

I would have been good with the trade down, or with Spriggs in the 2nd. Then again I'm not a GM. We'll have to see how it all plays out. Lee seems to be getting mixed review's in camp.

On one hand he has been "flat backed" a few times at the POA, on the other hand he has made some nice plays with his speed and hustle.

We'll see

So why did Mac not do what is best for the team? What is his motivation to act against the best interests of the team he runs?

Or is it that he just didn't do what you would have done?

Look, I am one of the biggest supporters of building up the OL. Hell, I played OL in college.

I think Macc has been universally praised for the job he's done with this team. Of course there are some outliers but that's to be expected. That said, I would have preferred and was hoping for an OT in the second round. If he chose LaRaven Clark or Shon Coleman, this draft could have been a grand slam. Without that we have to hope that he's got his eye on a potential cut by another team to fill in the right side, EVEN IF GIACOMINI RETURNS.

Can Ron Leary play rt or is he stricly a guard? A geno for leary trade would make a lot of sense right about now.
