Jets should start Bryce Petty and get a familiar backup

The New York Jets must give the earned position of starting quarterback to Bryce Petty in 2017 with a cheap veteran to keep building. Mark Sanchez is the man to bring back for this complicated task.

The New York Jets are on the lookout as the countdown to free agency begins. There are so many options flying around on whether to pick up a starter or draft yet another new quarterback. The Jets need to focus on rebuilding and give Bryce Petty the starting role and provide the support needed without breaking the bank.

The last thing the Jets need is breaking the bank, to have a “star” quarterback for a quick band-aid fix and be bitter when it falls through. We must invest money in building the line. Despite his past and bad history with the Jets, quarterback Mark Sanchez would be a perfect fit to back up Petty.

Although there is bad blood between the Jets and Sanchez, there is no denying he brought them to two AFC championship games under Rex Ryan. However, his last two seasons were hard to watch, and who can forget the haunting butt fumble?

Some speculated his very public breakup with celebrity Eva Longoria is what brought him down, since after the break up the once GQ magazine cover model began to decline in play and appearance was more scruffy.

This wasn’t the only break-up, though, as the Jets released Sanchez and was later picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanchez has been tossed around NFL throughout the past few years with the Eagles, Denver broncos and most recently the Dallas Cowboys.

Quarterback Tony Romo was injured and left the second string Sanchez to step in. The game took a turn for the worse and rookie quarterback Dak Prescott was thrown into the game allowing Romo to recover. However, Prescott winded up being Rookie of the Year and Romo stepped down as an NFL Playoff berth emerged.

This all led to the end of Sanchez in Dallas. The Cowboys still need Romo to keep building Prescott. That’s where Dallas is playing it right if that’s what they ultimately do. The Jets need to build Bryce with a supportive veteran just like the Cowboys are that understands not only the game but the New York market, fan base, and a franchise that is still rebuilding.

Sanchez knows both the good and ugly. With an inexpensive free agent contract, the Jets can continue spending on building their offensive line knowing they have a veteran quarterback to develop those around him. This is a win-win for all. This not only allows Sanchez to work with Petty but to groom Christian Hackenberg and help build his overall confidence.

It also ensures a veteran to be there in case Petty gets hurt again since it’s obvious Hackenberg is not ready. But with all the bad blood why would Sanchez agree? This would allow Sanchez to come together with Jets Nation one last time and let it all be water under the bridge and retire with an organization where he holds records with his two consecutive AFC championships as a rookie, where he originally started his career.

Overall, it’s best to see Sanchez get one last shot at redemption to not only end his career on a good note but also do his best to give something back to the organization he loved right from the start. The Jets need a veteran backup and well, it’s a situation that helps everyone out at least for another year or two while they see what they ultimately have with their young quarterbacks.

I think I would honestly rather see Geno Smith back than Sanchez.

This the epidomy of regressing. A move as such would mark the end of Macagnan as a GM.
The Jet need to make strategic moves at the QB position. Either a full out youth movement or again take a chance at a stop gap QB. Though no way choose a QB that is the BUTT of all jokes here.

Petty will compete with a journeyman like Brian Hoyer (or someone of that ilk) while Hackenberg continues his education on the sideline for yet another year.

My crystal ball told me so.

We need a minimum risk, low ego qb who can start or be happy backing up and be an example to the kids. Don't waste cap room until the right guy emerges.

I still believe Petty could start the year on the PUP list meaning whomever is brought in will compete with Hackenberg for the starting job... Should Hackenberg even compete is debatable but with a new group of coaches it is likely they will want to work with a fresh canvas like Hack...
