33 years old. Undrafted FA in 2010 with the Ravens. Seven year mostly backup/ST player with the Ravens. Had a cup of coffee with the Patriots last season, too. 24 career starts in 103 games. Career stats: 3 sacks, 2 FF, 5 fumble recoveries. 153 tackles. Part of 2 Super Bowl winners. Obvious Joe Douglas connection.

Even though he was primarily a special teams guy and 6 years older than Avery he has experience and might wind up being better than anyone currently in position to replace Avery. I'm going to trust that Joe knows what he is doing in this instance and wait to see what develops.

One thing I'm noticing about Douglas is he loves signing the vets. 33-years old and probably nothing left in the tank. Which according to his record of starts and playing, doesn't appear he ever had anything in the tank in the first place. HARD PASS on this one!

Not much Douglas can do during the PS. Mac ruined this roster and we have zero depth with major holes at starting positions. This year will be a tease of what next year could look like. Our offense will be really good though for the first time in decades.

The way I see this - one of the other LBs is going to have to slide into Avery's spot, and that was likely going to a be a Special Teams player. This guy knows how to play teams and is probably a consummate professional. It's a logical signing. It's not a splashy sigining, and that's not going to happen at this point, but given the current circumstances, it makes complete sense. Nothing really to pass on - this is a signing for depth and to fill a need on Special Teams.

My guess is that James Burgess, who has history with Williams while with the Browns, will be the favorite to start opposite CJ Mosley. Neville Hewitt is also in the running. He’s developed into a nice player.

Blake Cashman, unless I’ve missed something, isn’t quite up to that responsibility just yet. He’s a mid round developmental draft pick. He’ll probably see more ST this year.
