Marcus Gilchrist - DB - Chargers
The Jets have expressed interest in free agent SS Marcus Gilchrist.
Infusing the secondary with talent is a priority for the Jets. Gilchrist has struggled in coverage of late, but is at least capable of playing both safety and some nickel corner. The Redskins are also among the teams expected to show interest.

We just drafted a SS in the first round, so why are we even looking at a similar player whose weakness is coverage?

I'm getting more nervous about this free agency by the minute, because its starting to look like last years free agency.

I was in the minority when I said we should make a run at Julius Thomas, an army of one, but if this thing keeps going the way its going now, in about three days you guys are going to be wishing to God we had spent that money we are mandated to spend on someone like Thomas.

I don't understand making a run at a SS, when Pryor is a better suited SS than FS. To me, it's not addressing a need.

Well, the Jets weren't linked to McCourty so maybe it's in their plans to get a SS and move Pryor to center field. The HC is a former safety so I'm going to assume they know what they're targeting here.

Report: jets trying to get deal done today:

The New York Jets are hosting Marcus Gilchrist and are hoping to sign him by the end of the day.

http://boltbeat.com/2015/03/11/marcus-gilchrist-new-york-jets-rumors/

Former San Diego Chargers S Marcus Gilchrist is in New York and the Jets are hoping to lock him into a deal by the end of the day.

With Marcus likely heading out of town, the team will need to find someone to fill his spot on the roster. The team is expected to bring in Miami Dolphins S Jimmy Wilson in for a visit on Friday. If the team were able to sign him, then he would be able to fill the same role that Marcus had with the Chargers.

Jahleel Addae will also get the opportunity to take a larger role on the roster with Gilchrist moving on. Addae has to stay healthy to take on a bigger role, but he has made a nice contribution when he has been on the field. He brings a nice presence in the secondary and is always looking to make a big hit.

The Chargers will need to add more depth in the secondary this offseason. Brandon Flowers was re-signed and Jason Verrett will be back from injury, but the team still needs other player to help back there.

Wilson would be a welcomed addition to the roster. The team will take any help in the secondary that they can get.

We need LB help not anymore safeties or CB's ? It was obvious to me that Pryor is not suited to play centerfield as a FS. Don't we still have these safeties on the roster:
1) Pryor SS
2) Landry FS
3) Allen SS
4) Jarrett S
5) Miles S

No to Landry (not on the roster) and barely for Miles (who is a PS guy who has been called up for 2 games and back on the PS).

We need 1 more safety

Landry's a FA and Miles has spent more time on the PS. Safety is worth addressing with Allen and Pryor (I believe) being benched during the season and to me, Jarrett is an unknown. This position will be closely monitored by a HC who played the position, I'm sure.

EDIT: 55 beat me to it

I screwed up, didn't realize Gilchrist runs in the 4.4's and can play FS too, or nickel & dime.

I saw "SS" and reacted to that.

This would be another good piece to the puzzle if we can swing it.

Personally I think Cromartie would be a killer FS for us. With his size & speed, he'd be rejuvenated playing centerfield.

He's not a strong safety. Read this:

Safety Marcus Gilchrist

For a second straight season, Gilchrist started all 16 games, finishing second on the team in tackles with 76 and playing a total of 929 snaps, second defensively to Eric Weddle (961). Gilchrist also had two forced fumbles, a sack and an interception that sealed San Diego’s victory over the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 23.

Chargers career: Selected in the second round of the 2011 draft by the Chargers out of Clemson, Gilchrist emerged as a full-time starter in 2013 at safety, playing in the defensive backfield next to Weddle. Gilchrist was drafted as a cornerback but switched primarily to safety in 2012. He started 16 games in 2013, playing 951 snaps and finishing third on the team in tackles with 77. Gilchrist also finished the regular season with two interceptions, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and five pass breakups in 2013.

Argument for keeping Gilchrist: The Chargers like to keep productive, home-grown talent, and Gilchrist is a good fit in defensive coordinator John Pagano’s scheme. Gilchrist can play nickel cornerback and safety. And he has proved to be durable, playing in all 16 games the last two seasons.

Argument for letting Gilchrist go: The Chargers have been grooming Jahleel Addae to take on a larger role defensively for two seasons, and Pagano could be ready to see how he looks as a starter next to Weddle.

What should happen with Gilchrist: The Chargers will likely let Gilchrist become a free agent on Tuesday and see what he commands on the free-agent market. If he can be brought back at a reasonable price, the Chargers could oblige. However, San Diego has more pressing needs to address first.

Strength: Coverage, speed, range, and durability.

At the combine ran a 4.45 with 38 inch vertical as a CB prospect.

Yeah, he can cover. He played nickel when asked as well. I think he's being targeted as FS.

EDIT: once again, 55 beat me to it, with great details.

If that is actually the case, that changes my thought process, sign his ass ! Speaking of signing someone, does anyone know the hold-up is on getting Wilkerson locked up ? I thought it was going to be done during the Combines ?

Bowles primary defense is nickel (63% of snaps defensive snaps for cards are nickel formation, despite Marshawn Lynch and Gore being in the division)...Revis, Cro, and Skrine will start...im sure that was the selling point for skrine who refuses to be categorized as a nickel back...

Gilchrist lined up at SS because the Chargers have All Pro Eric Weddle at FS. As mentioned above, he's got speed and athleticism and can cover. Pryor will be our SS.

Agreed! unless Bowles plans on using more DB's out there to cover and keeps the safety's in the box..... I guess we will have to wait and see what his plan is LOL

I was mistaken on where he projects. He will more likely project at FS.

Jets and Gilchrist trying to get deal done today but his agent is lining up his next visit in case they cant make it work by EOD... I just think his game compliments pryor's well and if Bowles wants him for his defense, the former NFL safety's stamp of approval is all I need to be confident with the move.

Jets to begin contract talks with free agent safety Marcus Gilchrist, per source

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Jets either are negotiating a contract with free agent safety Marcus Gilchrist, or plan to begin doing so shortly, according to a league source.

But Gilchrist's camp has started to schedule a visit with another team, in case Gilchrist and the Jets cannot reach an agreement, the source said.

Gilchrist arrived Tuesday for a free agency visit with the Jets that has continued into Wednesday, as scheduled. Gilchrist is still meeting with the Jets as of Wednesday afternoon, the source said.

The source spoke to NJ Advance Media on a condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk publicly about the matter.

The Jets and Gilchrist talking contract terms during his visit should come as no surprise. That is what generally happens when free agents visit teams. But the Jets have a hole at safety, and they have yet to sign a safety this offseason.

The NFL's free agency signing period began at 4 p.m. Tuesday, so any players like Gilchrist who were impending free agents became unrestricted free agents at that time.

The Jets had been interested in Gilchrist before the signing period began. Gilchrist, 26, has spent his entire career with the Chargers, who drafted him in the second round in 2011.

• Darrelle Revis's message after agreeing to sign with Jets: 'I never wanted to leave'
• Players connected to the Jets in 2015 mock drafts
The Jets need a safety to play next to second-year pro Calvin Pryor because they are likely to let 32-year-old Dawan Landry walk in free agency. Rutgers alumnus Devin McCourty, the highest-profile pending free agent safety this offseason, decided to re-sign with the Patriots, though the Jets were reportedly not in the hunt for him.

Gilchrist didn't have a strong 2014 season. He was rated No. 72 among safeties by Pro Football Focus. But in 2013, he was 20th. He has been a full-time starting safety for the past two seasons, after playing cornerback for his first two years in the NFL. Gilchrist started four games in each of his first two NFL seasons.

I like Cro a lot as a press CB. His main flaw when he is healthy is, he is a terrible tackler. You don't want him playing Center field
