I totally respect the Sirius guy's, but they (x-GM) said we are headed back to CAP HELL with $127M invested in just our NEW DB's. Crap like that makes me nervous because we still have to pony up for our whole DL ? Any Cap experts out there ?

The deals are all front loaded. no cap hell in sight.

Looking at details on the Revis deal - little guaranteed money after the first two years. Jets structured it EXTREMELY well. Can get out.

#LRT - Outside of Macc, credit to Rod Graves and Jacqueline Davidson for work they are doing on #Jets contracts

I think we are fine inside.... Davis is solid and young.. I believe Harris is still an above average LB'er that will fit better in Bowles system (won't be in coverage)

The Key are the OLB'ers... Something in my gut says Bowles is gonna unleash Coples talent... and he will be 12-15 sack guy this year...

Want Gregory at 6 if Mariota isn't there But I wouldn't mind getting Cooper or White either. Our D should be good no matter what... the more weapons we can give Gailey to work with to helop Geno or Fitz... I am good with.

I'll be surprised is the Jets take a WR at 6. Maybe 2nd 3rd round.

Couples certainly has the measurables . gets a ton of QB hit's and hurries, which are good, but always seems to be 1/2 step late

Right there is our problem, we see these stud pass rushers like Gholston, Maybin & Coples and it's hit or miss, and we hit on Richardson, but another Gregory, Ray, or Dupree or Beasley, who knows, it's a crap shoot.

Take the sure bet in Amari Cooper WR, he's the next Julio Jones. He makes catching a pass look so easy. That kid was raised on a Jug machine !:football-catching-s

I listen to Pat Kirwan everyday on Sirius... It was a caller that asked if we are headed back to cap hell. PK responded with it's a lot of money for one position after he talked about all the guaranteed money for Skrine, Revis and Cro and we'll see if the Jets are headed to cap hell, maybe.... to summarize his statement.

And as pointed out all of these deals are clear and free in 2-3 years... Should be long term cap friendly but the point of cap hell could mean we may have no in season flexibility if there is an injury...

I think Vic Beasley is going to be a BEAST, and that's before surrounding him with ridiculous talent.

I was on the Cooper bandwagon for a while (and wouldn't be upset if we took him), but pass rush is a WAY bigger need right now, and I'll take Demarcus Ware over Dez Bryant all day long . . .

In the old days the Cyborg visited Clemson & Furman on recruiting trips (with my folks), so I love Clemson , and Beasley was a monster and sack history leader (33) and @ the combines he was one of the best work-out pass rushers, no doubt. Some College Scouts feel he is a one trick Pony which scares me.With our 37th pick, get Eli Harold OLB 6'4"/240 who played in a 3-4 D @ UVA. And get the sure pick Cooper @ # 6.

I liked Beasley at the Combine, but didn't he play at 235 in college and added weight for the Combine. If he can maintain the 255-260 frame, great. If not, well another wasted pick!

Well with the new secondary, that half step should be a sack now, Hopefully.

That's exactly what I'm hoping. Coples isn't Gholson. He's a pretty good football player.......We'll see what happens

So the Gilchrist deal is essentially a two-year, $8.5M deal. Pretty reasonable deal for #Jets.

LRT - Important. #Jets can actually get out of Gilchrist deal after 2015 season.

another team friendly deal for the jets. looks like the trend is to lower the signing bonuses and guarantee 1 or 2 years of the contract. this is smart as it increases your flexibility down the road if you want to move on from a player as their is less unamortized signing bonus that would accelerate against the cap.

Good article. Interesting Jets were the worst against TEs in the NFL last year, giving up 75% comp and 14 TDs on throws to TEs (worst in football) and 0 INts.

Also note they (SD) had him covering Welker, Edelman, Crabtree, and Amendola in the games referenced below...I think he can cover TEs if he can cover them and cover them well. Still very happy with this signing.

The AFC East is turning into a tight-end hot spot.

In addition to New England Patriots' star Rob Gronkowski, who has terrorized the East for a few years, the division added Jordan Cameron, who signed with the Miami Dolphins. Charles Clay could be changing addresses, as he signed a five-year, $38 million offer sheet with the Buffalo Bills -- and the Dolphins have seven days to match. There's also Jace Amaro, who has a chance to be a pretty good player for the New York Jets

While Marcus Gilchrist is a versatile player, he may not be able to handle the division's elite tight ends.
The bigger issue for the Jets, however, is defending the tight end. In case you forgot, they weren't too good at it last season. They allowed a league-high 14 touchdowns and a 75-percent completion, third-worst in the league, according to ESPN Stats & Information. They didn't intercept a single pass intended for a tight end.

Enter, Marcus Gilchrist, their new safety.

Team officials haven't commented yet, but we can only assume that one of his jobs will be to cover the tight end -- and that's not in his wheelhouse. As far as I can tell, Gilchrist didn't cover too many elite tight ends last season for the San Diego Chargers.

I studied the tape of four games -- two against the Denver Broncos, one against the Patriots and one against the San Francisco 49ers. I picked those games because of Julius Thomas, Gronkowski and Vernon Davis, respectively -- three of the league's most dangerous tight ends.

Conclusion: You can count on one hand the number of times Gilchrist was in single coverage against one of those guys.

Against the Broncos, Gilchrist didn't play much safety at all. He was the nickel back, spending a vast majority of the plays covering Wes Welker in the slot. He did a very good job, as Welker caught only four passes for 21 yards in the two contests. You could tell he played cornerback at Clemson; he was smooth with his hip turn and back pedal. He looked comfortable with his back to the quarterback in man-to-man coverage. His one hiccup occurred in the end zone, where he was flagged for a holding penalty that nullified an Eric Weddle interception.

As for covering the ultra-athletic Thomas, Gilchrist got beat once, maybe the only time he covered him -- a shallow crossing route that went for 17 yards.

Gilchrist played a variety of roles against the Patriots, but he wasn't involved in any Gronkowski coverage. He covered Danny Amendola in the slot and, occasionally, tight end Tim Wright. In this game, he was used a little away from the line of scrimmage, as the Chargers used some two-deep safety looks against Tom Brady.

Actually, Gilchrist was lined up as a single-high safety on his worst play of the game -- a 69-yard touchdown pass to Julian Edelman, who beat Brandon Flowers on a deep seam. Gilchrist provided deep help, but he took a bad angle and got turned around, allowing Edelman to break into the clear.

Against the 49ers, Gilchrist was used mostly in a traditional safety role, occasionally providing over-the-top help on Davis. He covered the slot on a few plays, matching up with Michael Crabtree (two nice plays) and Anquan Boldin (a 10-yard catch). His signature play was a blow-up hit on fullback Bruce Miller, who fumbled at the goal line.

In short, the Jets are getting a versatile player whose man-to-man skills are good enough to defend No. 2 slot receivers (i.e. Welker and Amendola) and No. 2 tight ends. It's a misnomer to say he's a safety; he's really a safety/nickel back hybrid.

Gilchrist's skill set will create game-plan flexibility for Todd Bowles, but he doesn't appear to be a lockdown safety that will solve the Jets' tight-end issues. This isn't to suggest he can't do it; he just didn't get many chances last season.
