Texans cut rookie Chandler Worthy from active roster, to rejoin practice squad

Ryan Mallett didn’t play well and left after he was drilled in the chest. Brian Hoyer played too well to be removed and kept the Texans in the game with an impressive performance. Grade: C
The Texans cut undrafted rookie wide receiver Chandler Worthy from the active roster.

However, the Texans are signing Worthy to the practice squad as long as he clears waivers.

The Texans also signed defensive tackle Brandon Dunn to the active roster off of the Chicago Bears practice squad, signed wide receiver Josh Lenz to the practice squad and cut offensive tackle Edawn Coughman from the practice squad.

Worthy has 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash and is one of the fastest players on the Texans’ roster.

He has caught three passes for 14 yards this season with three punt returns for nine yards and one kickoff return for 27 yards. He’s eligible to be signed back to the practice squad.

The former Troy University standout was signed to the Texans’ practice squad and promoted to the active roster after being cut during the final major roster cutdown.

Signed in May as a free agent to a three-year, $1.578 million contract, Worthy was an accomplished returner at Troy (Ala.).

The native of Griffin, Ga., had 1,919 total return yards, including two touchdowns with one 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also caught 137 career passes for 1,767 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Looks like he's a put and KO return specialist. Hope he makes it, we sure need one

So could All-Preseason team David Clowney.
Doesn't make him a good WR.

This is a futures contract, not first round draft pick. if he's still on the team in April it will be a surprise. Doesn't mean he can't be an impact punt returner.

Chandler Worthy did more than just show NFL scouts Monday at Troy Pro Day that he's fast, strong and has hops.

The former Troy receiver/returner assured them and anyone else in the NFL listening that he's all about business and drama free.

"I put in the work," Worthy said. "Always staying at home, trying to put in extra work. More than the next guy. Leaving all that stuff alone that most college people do just so I can make it and believing in my dream. Feel like I can make it just as far as anybody else that's going into the draft."

Worthy ran an unofficial time of 4.34 seconds in the 40-yard dash and posted a 39-1/2-inch vertical jump Monday, but felt compelled to say he's "leaving all that stuff alone that most college people do."

In other words, he's staying out of trouble.

With all the off-field issues regarding NFL players past, present and future, having good character is just as important as running fast and jumping high these days. Worthy made a point to say he's solely focused on playing in the NFL.

The more talent you have, the more nonsense teams will tolerate, but being a good guy can work in a player's favor. Worthy also showed he can flat out run and jump and has some strength packed into that 5-foot, 9-inch, 173-pound frame.

With drizzle falling on a slightly wet field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Worthy ran unofficial times of 4.34 on two 40-yard dashes. One timer clocked Worthy running a 4.27 on the second 40, but Troy listed him as running 4.34 for each dash.

"I felt like I could have ran a lot faster," Worthy said. "I'll take a 4.3. That's not bad, either. A little short of 4.2 that I wanted, but I'm satisfied with what I got."

At last month's NFL combine, only J.J. Nelson of UAB (4.28) and Phillip Dorsett of Miami (4.33) ran faster times at the receiver position than Worthy did Monday. Worthy said the NFL scouts told the players the weather could be taken in account as he admitted to slipping a couple of times on the turf.

Worthy thinks the scouts will shave 0.2 seconds "off a good amount of stuff."

The players started the pro day inside Troy's weight room and Worthy created an early buzz by posting a 39-1/2-inch vertical jump. He leaped 11 feet and a half inch on his board jump and had 17 bench reps of 225 pounds.

"I was blessed with big calves to be able to jump," said Worthy with a smile.

With scouts from the Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans , New York Giants, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars present, Worthy seemed to improve his NFL future with Monday's effort.

"I feel that anything is possible," Worthy said. "I put in the work. I'm just showing the results from putting in the work. Once I get on a team, nobody is going to stop me then. All I need is a foot in the door."

Last season, Worthy led the Trojans in receptions with 44. He was second on the team in receiving yards (428) and receiving touchdowns (3). Worthy would likely work in the slot as a receiver, but can make plays on special teams as he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns last season. Worthy returned 27 kicks for 704 yards in 2014.

An Griffin, Georgia, native, Worthy said that no one is going to outwork him if he gets a chance. Having work ethic is important, but talent always reigns supreme in the NFL.

Worthy has some of that and just in case the NFL didn't know, he let the league know he's not doing anything foolish, either.

This is just a sampling of whats to come in terms of a theme for player acquisition. We are seriously lacking speed in all three phases of the game. I would expect that the Jets are going to focus this offseason on improving team speed throughout the roster.

True dat.
Didn't mean to weigh in on the value, just that running fast doesn't necessarily translate to being a good WR.

Yeah, Stephen Hill would be going to the Pro Bowl if that's all it took

Fun Fact Tuesday: Dominique Williams and Zac Stacy are the only RBs on the #Jets roster presently under contract.
