Jets think facing Gregg Williams in practice helps Sam Darnold

When the Jets hired Gregg Williams as their defensive coordinator, head coach Adam Gase said that Williams’s competitiveness in practice will “be the difference maker for us” because it will be like playing a game every day.

One of the players the Jets expect to benefit the most from those practice clashes is quarterback Sam Darnold. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said the sheer number of different looks that Williams throws at the offense over the course of a practice session will be a plus for Darnold as he tries to take a step forward in his second season.

“I think it helps Sam a lot, just seeing all of the different looks and he has so many different, multiple personnel groupings that you know. You’re seeing different fronts, different coverages, especially in the third-down stuff,” Loggains said, via the team’s website. “He’s going to accumulate and stack reps of odd floater, overload pressures and trap blitzes and all of those things he’s going to get to see. It’s going to be tremendous value as the season goes on and it’s stuff that he can put away in his toolbox and it’s going to come up in Week Six, Seven, Eight, and he’s getting a lot of good experience from that stuff.”

Darnold had a rough time against a Williams-run Browns defense in Week Three last season as he went 15-of-31 for 169 yards while throwing two interceptions. He posted better results as the year went on and the Jets are pinning a lot of their hopes on more frequent bouts with Williams continuing that trend.

Williams defenses are usually top notch and super aggressive. This will only help Darnold and we should definitely see an improvement this year all around from him and the team. I can’t wait to see our team this year! J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets

These articles are a load of crap. Sanchez went against Rex Ryan's top defense for two years. Didnt help him at all. Only thing that will help Darnold is Darnold himself.

It didn't help Sanchez because he was a tier three QB at best. So no matter what they did it wasn't really going to help him. Talent is talent and if you don't have a ton of it, then all the training/practice in the world won't take you but so far. Darnold seems ALOT different, better and I believe we all can see that. Darnold, I'll admit he played majority of the year as a whole at a tier three level but showed signs of getting better to being a tier two QB.

This is all in his first year/rookie year at 20 years old. That is a very positive thing and a Gregg Williams defense can only help make him better. Imagine what he’ll be with the the help of a Gregg Williams defense and Gase training three-four years from now. Unlike Sanchez who pretty much was on his way out the door after four year with the team. Only time will tell how good Darnold will be but I believe we have ourselves a great one here!

I disagree Elias. The Sanchez comparison isn't a fair one. Darnold is much more talented player than Sanchez first of all. Secondly, I think the tempo of the practices and how Gase runs the offense will help Darnold a lot. You can throw every defense at a QB in practice but if the tempo is not fast enough, it won't help as much on Sunday. I think seeing Williams' defenses in a real game style tempo will help Darnold to process information faster. He already throws with good anticipation. He just hasn't seen everything yet at game speed. I think the pairing of Gase's tempo on offense and Williams' playbook and tempo at practice on defense will be a big help to Darnold this year.

It certainly isn't going to hurt to put him under pressure before the season starts and get him used to making good decisions faster.

It's like practicing golf in more game-like conditions, rather than "hitting to nowhere" on the range.. Helps a lot when on the course.

Parcells instantly turned Vinny into a great qb. Then when Vinny got but the went to Miter and after a few weeks have up on him. He then turned Ray Lucas into a pretty darn good qb, who very well may have gone to the superbowl had he had those extra few weeks that were wasted on Mirer.

A lot of it is the system, like I always say about the cheetahs. No matter who plays qb, there, they play great. (Same Parcells type system by the way). That said, the qb has to have some smarts and talent to succeed.

When Sanchez was here, I never felt like we would score a point consistently. Not sure if that was all in Sanchez or on the offense as a whole...but I did have more faith in him in a big game.

I haven't seen enough of Darnold to know what to think of him to be honest. I am not excited yet

I don’t see how you can’t be excited about Darnold at this point. Sanchez had a playoff contending team around him from day one and he had to be carried both years to the AFC championship games. Now I’ll admit he stepped up surprisingly in the playoffs and in a game here or there in the regular season but he was very inconsistent those first two years. After that, they started stripping away the team and more weight was put on his shoulders and Sanchez couldn’t handle it. He got worse as the team and coaching got worse.

Now Darnold comes to a Jets team that is horrible from day one and he held his own. In spite of the bad coaching, GM moves, lack of talent around him and suspect oline he actually held his own. Imagine Sanchez playing with the team last year. He wouldn’t of thrown a TD period and probably would have thrown about 30 ints and fumbled 25 times. Darnold struggled last year but held his own. He really was impressive those especially last 5 games of the season. Now you give him these weapons, better coaching and GM and a year experience under his belt. Gotta be excited about that!

I don't know. We won 5 games right? Darnold ran for his life. Alot! I always have said, that that fear stays with you, so I hope he can have protection from now on and forget last year where his first thought was to run for his life. Brady had all day from day one of his career and that's why the few times that he sees pressure he cried hard. I just wish Darnold had that advantage.... And I would have liked to see how he plays in a protected pocket on a regular basis.

He played well in the run. The plan is for him to not be on the run. What if he's better in the ad lib situations. Plus nobody mentioned the sophomore slump. We also have new everything and they all need to adapt quickly to a new culture and gel quickly. I just hope it's not asking for too much

Plus. Belichick is winning the division. Not a doubt. Hard to be excited for a second place in the division best case scenario. I really hate to say it

I agree Darnold ran for his life because Mac was useless at building an OL, but I will say Darnold can scramble and is actually pretty good at improvising. I don't like second place, but I will be happy with a WC appearance next year.

I just don’t see Darnold getting that mental block of feeling the pressure and folding under the pressure of it like what David Carr went through or a Eli Manning right now. Darnold seems to be a ton more tougher, mentally strong and talented then that and he will adjust to the better oline and talent around him. Now if he went that for another 2-3 years then that could effect him. Getting beat down like that can wear down any player after awhile but it will take more then one year to get Darnold like that.

I don't know if Williams defense in practice is going to help Darnold or not, but I can say that I love his coaching style and I'm excited to see what he is going to bring to the defense. We are still lacking any talent at rushing the passer but I think he will elevate the rest of the defense.
