theJetsblog -- The New York Jets have picked up the 2017 option for defensive end Sheldon Richardson, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.

As New York's first-round pick in 2013, Richardson's fifth-year option is guaranteed only for injury and would pay him about $8 million in 2017, according to Mehta.

Richardson will earn $1.78 million in 2016, according to Spotrac. He signed a four-year, $10.05 million deal with the Jets after he was drafted.

The 25-year-old Richardson recorded five sacks and two forced fumbles in 11 games for the Jets last year. Paired with rookie Leonard Williams and veteran Muhammad Wilkerson, whom the Jets franchise tagged this offseason, the three linemen combined for 20 sacks last year.

Richardson served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, and could face more discipline by the league stemming from a road race last July.

He has 16 1/2 sacks and four forced fumbles through 43 career games with New York.

Curious to why it was picked up now. Is there a reason not to do it next year?

teams need to pick up the option by may 2. pretty much a no brainer decision

nj.com ...May 2 is the deadline this year for teams to exercise the fifth-year options for 2013 first-round picks.

Almost all first-round selections have their fifth-year options picked up. It is a low-risk move for teams, one that gives them another year of relatively cheap contractual control of a high-performing young player (like Richardson).

Here's why this is a low-risk move for teams: The option's monetary value does not become fully guaranteed until the new league year begins, next March. Until then, it is guaranteed only for a major injury (one that would sideline the player for all of 2017).

Exercising the fifth-year option now lets teams prevent a player from becoming a free agent next March. And if the player happens to underperform or get in trouble, the team can cut the guy before next March and take no future salary cap hit, since the option's 2017 money figure is essentially hollow right now.

Remember, last offseason, the Jets picked up rush outside linebacker Quinton Coples' fifth-year option for 2016. But that move meant nothing. The Jets wound up cutting Coples during the 2015 season — as they would've done after the season anyway, once it became apparent he did not have a significant role in new coach Todd Bowles' defense.

Richardson, by all accounts, hasn't gotten into trouble since last offseason, when he was arrested after a high-speed chase with police, and also suspended four games by the NFL for repeated positive marijuana tests. But if he does screw up again, the Jets still aren't committed to him for 2017, despite the news that they have picked up his fifth-year option.

Presuming Richardson stays out of trouble and the Jets keep him, he is now set to play 2017 on a one-year, $8.069 million contract — and the money will become fully guaranteed next March. Unless, that is, the Jets sign Richardson to a long-term contract before next season.

Fellow star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson played 2015 on his fifth-year option, and then the Jets this offseason slapped a one-year, $15.701 million franchise tag on him. The Jets and Wilkerson's camp don't appear close to agreeing on a long-term contract, so the Jets could trade Wilkerson.

Thanks, I understand the option, just not that it was due a season early
