The Jets made some big changes up front this offseason, but they want to make sure to keep one key part of their defense.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets plan to pick up the fifth-year optionon defensive lineman Leonard Williams‘ contract for 2019.

The Jets have been encouraged by the play of the former No. 6 overall pick, and after letting former linemate Muhammad Wilkerson this offseason, need the stability up front.

The 23-year-old Williams could also be in line for an extension sooner rather than later, as the Jets are sitting on a pile of cap room and hope to keep him around for the long term.

2 times in the last 3 NFL drafts, the word was the jets got the best player is the draft with the 6th pick.. what an absolute crock of shit that was both times!!

williams is a nice player & i can still see him getting better.. he's still a kid & hopefully he hasn't picked up any awful habits from a couple of ex teammates that played in his unit.. so yeah, i can see wanting to extend him.. but according to this report the jets already have seen enough to want to extend him long term?? well if that part is true, this regime needs to be gone before they get the chance.. because these two dopes reward mediocrity/JAGs like nobody's ****in' business!! the culture of shooting for the occasional road playoff game loses is bad ****in' comedy!!

you don't build your team around soon to be expensive "nice" young players, you complement a team with guys like that..

hell, adams wasn't even our best rookie safety on the team much less in the league last season.. but not to worry, apparently he's put back on his recruiting cap.. word is he's already campaigning for dez bryant..

jeezbus..

Awesome. Leonard Williams is an important building block on this team. We need to lock him up long term after next year.

I agree. He's only 23 and has shown a lot of potential. There is still growth to be had, but he has the potential of being a dominant force on the DL.

we definitely need to surround him with some young talent so they can grow together...

what lead you to that conclusion aside from we burned up a 6 to draft him?? what do you consider dominant for a 300+ pound non edge rusher?? 6 to 7 sacks?? doing a nice job against the run?? going forward do you envision him somehow becoming an explosive freak of nature athlete?? he won't.. he's a nice player with some upside..

much like adams, just because we drafted them & other NFL fans know their names does not change that..

Leonard Williams did his job, pressuring the QB and stopping the run... If there was some more comparable talent with him on the line then his pressures can turn into sacks and/or turnovers... Mclendon not really an every down player but isn't a normal nose tackle either for a 3-4 defense... Mclendon is only a two down player even tho he is in there the majority of the snaps...

Not to mention only our inside linebackers were dominate last season... Jordan Jenkins did good on his side, but the other side was a revolving door... Sewing up the front seven this year will be key to allowing Leo the ability to be relentless and pin his ears back to attack...

Well, the Jets drafted him, so he must be mediocre at best. Same with Adams.

Leonard Williams isn’t going to be the force he can be until we get another dominant player or two around him. He excelled with Mo and Sheldon there, but Wilkerson took the season off, Sheldon got traded, and as you said, no edge rusher doesn’t help either. He’s not going to throw a Superman cape on and dominate all by himself.

With that said, I thought both he and Jamal had good seasons. Adams has got star written all over him.

not worried about Adams he showed his potential in year one... was he dominate, no but he was never give up attitude and made everyone around him better... I expect big things for Adams in year two not to mention for the secondary to take the next step especially with TJ now on the roster...

The Jets secondary has the potential to be very good next season. Even dominant if everyone plays up to their potential.

problem with that is our run defense suffered in that progress...

This is true. Hopefully they will address that as well, if not in free agency, there isn't a lot to choose from there, or at least make an effort in the draft to shore up our run stuffing ability. Hankins is still available and run stuffing is his forte. I never heard how his visit here went, but he has not signed anywhere else yet and the Jets can offer the most compensation.

Jets have their idea of what he is worth and he has his idea... Unfortunately they are far a part and is why he hasn't signed... But soon enough he will see he will have to choose which team has the best chance for him to reap the rewards from this small pay day into a sizable one after this one/two year deal...

Again, so true. No one else, obviously, is caving to his demands either so with that in mind I think the Jets are still going to put forth the best offer simply because they can afford to. I believe for him it's mostly about the money or the potential for big money so he might still migrate to the Jets before it's all said and done. He wasn't best against the pass, but we have that covered pretty well now, but he is really good against the run and I think would be a good defensive investment.

I like Leonard Williams, I did not on Draft night, but the way he was talked about on Draft night, I figured by now he would be like Mark Gasteneau or Joe Klecko. I liked the Adams pick, but he didn't dominate the way he was supposed to. All i hear is, "he's going to be great" . When? Sure they both had good games, but where's the Domination? I;m not looking for an argument because I like them both. Other teams, there players dominate. Ours don't.

williams is not an "all pro" kind of kid.. he just isn't..

i don't remember who loved or hated the pick here anymore.. but to hear some tell it, now williams is a beast getting ready to set the league on fire... of course he will.. he got drafted by this regime what else need be said??
