Jets Will Go Hard After C J Spiller

CJ Spiller is miles better than anyone in the 4th or 5th round of this draft. If he were eligible for this draft he would be considered a borderline 1st rounder. He has elite speed and open field play making ability.

Yes, he has had trouble staying healthy but that is the only knock on the guy. But then again, Percy Harvin has the same issues. The difference between the two players is that Spiller comes at half the price and he is a good guy and teammate. They are almost identical players on the field, however.

Well worth the risk.

Agreed...especially after he ran a 4.37 at the combine, i think he'd be a late rd 1 pick this year if he was coming out.

I'm fine with Spiller, but with our mountains of cap space, why not go after DeMarco Murray?

SHOOT HIGH for Murray and make Spiller your Plan B, thats what I say.

I like Spiller, but this is very true. One of the reason I think it is a priority to bring back Powell

Powell get no respect and he is durable and more of a complet back then spiller who is never on the field.

murray scares me. he's already been injury prone and the track record for RBs coming off 400 carry seasons is not good. it's usually down hill (and fast) from there.

I find my own perspective evolving to the place where I don't like the idea of spending significant free-agent dollars at the RB position. It's far and away the position with the skill set that requires the least NFL rep time to acquire, and when you factor in the injury risk, it just doesn't make sense to tie up big bucks at the position. I think the Patriots already figured this out, as much as I hate to give them credit. There are guys who can play the position in every round of the draft.

There aren't many RBs that combine all the following qualities: good blocker, good receiver out of the backfield, speed to gain the edge and take it to the house, and can pick up the tough yards. You have to pick someone possessing 2 or at most 3 out of 4. Shane Vereen might be worth a look.

I think Spiller is a better version of Vereen. I'd take Spiller over Vereen due to his big play ability. I think the top RBs in FA area:

AP - he stated yesterday he wants a fresh start from the Vikings.
Murray
Spiller
Forsett
Vereen
Ingram
Matthews
Powell
Ridley

I'd be happy with Spiller. He is an explosive RB as everyone knows and he had his best year with Gaily.

With that said, this is one of the best drafts I can recall at RB. Looking at the draft if a team were to go BAP the draft could fall in a way that a RB could be at the top of a team's board at every round. Including the first if Gurley is 100%.

I want the Jets to sign CJ Spiller just so everytime he gets the ball I can scream, "This... Is... CJ Spilla! This... Is... CJ Spilla!" to the tune of Judas Priest's "Painkiller".

I agree with almost all of this. I just hope if we don't get Spiller we do not use the 6th pick on a RB

I'd be willing to pay Spiller big money. He's entering his 6th season (28 in August), has a career 5.0 yards per carry average, and has been pretty durable other than that collar bone break last year. He's got big play ability, and can really turn it on in the open field. Nice receiver out of the backfield, too. He's a complete back, and still in his prime years.

I can see the Jets making a decent push for him because of Gailey. He would be a nice compliment to Ivory's thumper style. Ideally, he'd take a hefty 3 year deal from us.

We'll have about 50 million in cap space when free agency kicks off.

Now a nice chunk of that needs to be put aside for Wilkerson and other young, core players we need to lock up for the long haul, but any way you slice it we're going into free agency with a GOLD CARD this year, and here's the thing, we are mandated by league rules to spend a whole lot of it. We couldn't pull an Idzik this year if we wanted too. League rules are constructed so no owner can just spend the rest of his life hoarding money. You can get away with that one year, but if you have tons of cap space the following year you are mandated to spend it.

That said, we have a bit of a problem because the cap number was recently raised, and not slightly, but substantially. This essentially bailed out the teams that were up against the old cap limit and gave them a better chance to re-sign their own pending free agents, of course the guys who would have been most coveted on the open market, so it works to our detriment because now we will have boat loads of cash to spend, cash we are mandated to spend, and probably not a lot of young impact free agents to spend it on.

That said, if a player like DeMarco Murray hits the free agent market, it would probably behoove the Jets to designate him a high priority free agent, because again, we have to spend money and it would be nice to get some real bang for the buck, instead of being forced to throw it away on guys who don't really deserve it.

Murray may not be our biggest need, but he is a truly elite player in this league in the prime of his career, just turned 27 last week, and despite getting 400 carries last year, he has not really been over used in his career due to injuries (lost time) and being a member of a RBBC approach in Dallas for the early part of his career. So I would target Murray as a priority FA and make Spiller my fallback Plan B if we are unable to sign Murray.

Spiller open to re-signing with Bills?

Ideally, a player in the final year of his contract wants everything to go his way, because it should result in more options and a bigger payday in free agency.

Unfortunately for C.J. Spiller, pretty much everything went wrong in his 2014 contract year. He posted career-low numbers in games played (9), rushing yards (300), yards per carry (3.8), receptions (19) and receiving yards (125).

There has been buzz that he could reuinte with former Bills OC Chan Gailey, who holds the same position now with the New York Jets, but it sounds like the running back remains open to re-signing with the Bills under the direction of head coach Rex Ryan.

“There’s a possibility that I could be in a Bills uniform,” Spiller said on SiriusXM NFL Radio (H/T BuffaloBills.com). “We never know how this situation is going to play out. The organization knows that I want to be there, so pretty much the ball is in their court.

"At the same time we’re going to weigh all our options and see what suits me best. The biggest thing is you want to go somewhere where you’re wanted. That’s the biggest thing. That’s pretty much how I’m approaching this thing. I’m looking forward to it.”

Since his role was so reduced in recent years, Spiller has only 826 career touches as a pro, so he has very little wear and tear for a player about to turn 28. If he lands in the right spot, his fantasy arrow will be pointing straight up.
