Yes, he's probably the best backup qb out there right now but how much does he acut ally have left? I rather sign him at the end of the preseason so Petty can continue to get valuable reps.

If he's healthy he has plenty left, he's only 30 years old, just turned 30 in June.

But this will be his fourth team in two years. He was with Seattle lost to Russell Wilson, lost to Derek Carr in Oakland, got released by the Pats and now us. Probably has another team in between there too. Lll

In retrospect there was no shame in losing out to Russell Wilson, the kid took them to back-to-back Superbowls in his first two years. Carr was a projected first round pick who fell to the Raiders at the top of round two, so they were committed to him from the moment they drafted him. Brady is Brady and the Pats are high on Jimmy G.

I'm not saying Matt Flynn is Joe Montana, but he hasn't been in a spot like this, where the competition at the position was this weak. I wouldn't be surprised if he started for us at some point by default, he has a much better arm than Fitzpatrick, but at the very least he should be a quality backup.

I hope so Ham. The jets need a backup until Geno's recovery. I don't see anyone better than Flynn out there.
Hoping Kyle Orton reconsiders. I think I read somewhere that he'd consider coming back but not until camp is over.

Wow. I like this idea. Is he great and is he going to lead us to a SB? No way. But at least he's going to keep things competitive for Fitz and he could possibly beat out Fitz altogether.

Bryce Petty needs to sit this season out. He's just too green and he could not possibly be understanding how to diagnose NFL defenses, find 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options on the field. Putting him on the field would be rushing him and I'm afraid that might ruin his career.

Yes. No way the Jets should gamble with Petty as the #2 for this season. I envision him as a 2 next season, and possibly challenging for the starter job then, or in 2017. He's too raw right now, guys.

Petty's future will depend on what the Jets do next off-season and in the draft.

Well, let's wait until the end of pre-season to make all our judgments on BP. We will have to bring in a 3rd guy so if Flynn is it, so be it. He fits the bill for what we need; a journeyman back-up. Still, I would like to see BP get the reps with the 2's in pre-season. If we shut him down after that then so be it.

Now that the Jets have a workout scheduled with free agent quarterback Matt Flynn on Friday — an audition for the No. 2 job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick, as Geno Smith recovers from jaw surgery — you probably want to know about Flynn.

First, let's point out the obvious: Flynn getting a workout with the Jets does not mean they are definitely going to sign him. They are clearly considering him, yes, but he isn't a member of the Jets yet, and he might not ever be.

Now that we've established that, here are six things to know about Flynn:

1. He's been around. The 30-year-old Flynn was a seventh-round draft pick by the Packers in 2008. He has played for a total of six NFL teams, including the Patriots this offseason. They cut him earlier this week.

2. He is a career backup. Flynn has started just seven games in his career. He has appeared in 53 total games. The bulk of his work came with the Packers: 46 games played, including six starts. He was in Green Bay from 2008-11, and then again from 2013-14.

3. How'd he do as a starter? Just OK. In 2013, he played in five games for the Packers, with four starts, because Aaron Rodgers and Seneca Wallace got hurt, and Scott Tolzien struggled. Flynn re-signed with the Packers in November of that year, shortly after the Bills cut him. In five games with the Packers in 2013, he completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,146 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. The Packers went 2-2 in games he started that year.

4. He had a chance in Seattle. After he backed up Rodgers in Green Bay from 2008-11, Flynn got an opportunity to compete for a starting job with the Seahawks in 2012. They wound up giving him $8 million guaranteed in his new contract. But some rookie named Russell Wilson won the starting job, and Flynn was traded to Oakland the following spring.

5. He's made a good deal of money. Considering he hasn't done a whole lot in his NFL career, Flynn has padded his bank account quite well. As Pro Football Talkpointed out when the Raiders released him in October of 2013 — after he failed to impress them as a starting quarterback — Flynn got that $8 million from Seattle in 2012. He was due to receive $2 million more guaranteed from Seattle, but the Raiders bumped that up to $6.5 million, for his 2013 pay. (Of course they did.) So Flynn got $14.5 million combined from the Seahawks and Raiders — for five total games played and one start (with Oakland).

6. He has two Packers records. In the 2011 regular season finale, the Packers rested Rodgers. Flynn threw for six touchdowns and 480 yards, both franchise records. It was just the second start of his career. And while it paved the way for that lucrative contract with Seattle, it proved to be an aberration for Flynn, who has never been able to establish himself as a consistently successful NFL starter.

Sign Flynn and then cut Geno, but let Petty get most of the reps in PS.

Flynn, Thigpen, Grossman, Quinn.........God help me, but I'd take Vick over all of them.

Apparently we reached out to Vick's agent but then decided to go another direction.

All options are useless at this point.

Matt Flynn was long gone from the Raiders, when Derek Carr came into the league last year. ( Matt Schaub) Terrell Pryor was the Qb who beat out Matt Flynn. Matt Mcgloin surpassed Matt Flynn on the depth chart also.
