Joe Douglas plan B?

Plan B looks pretty damn good! I like the patience and filling needs with good solid pieces. Nothing spectacular like Trumaine Johnson :batoverhead: but cost effective moves. He (JD) is really showing his pedigree.

patience over pedigree... only re-signing our own players to simple one year deals... the new OL jury still out on or if they can be good...

Joe..... now its time to sign a WR and another CB. Still have quite a bit of cap room I don’t want to draft and start 2 rookie WR Perhap a trade deal with the Rams for Cooks

Looking forward to seeing what JD does in the draft, because IMHO he has been spot on in his handling of free agency.

If I had to guess - at THIS point in time, the 1st and 2nd rounds are going to be a OT & WR(the order of which will be determined pursuant to their grading at actual selection time). The 3 picks thereafter(in the 3rd and fourth rounds)probably 2 CBs and possibly an RB(depth behind Bell) or another WR(particularly - if the 1st round pick is an OT).

Of course - there are still free agents available - which could alter the above

Saw this draft scenario on Turn on the Jets assuming top 4 OTs are off the board and we trade with Eagles who want Lamb:

Makes a ton of sense for both parties particularly in that Jones is probably the 2nd best fit at OT in Gase's system. 3 future OL building blocks (although Muti is a bit of a health risk), 2 explosive WRs and McFarland (another great fit), talented CB, etc. I would love to see this happen.

I think the team needs a lot - but - I would be very surprised if they don't grab a dynamic WR in first 2 rounds(barring a trade), and I'm even leaning toward the 1st round(Jeudy or Lamb). Of course, much depends on Douglas's final grades. If they do take a WR with the 11th pick - then I think they are out of the WR selection business till the 3rd day if at all.

I'll also add - every team wants a grade "A" edge rusher - but - they are very hard to find and virtually impossible as the draft goes on, As we saw last year its a risky choice as we wasted a valuable 3rd round pick, I see Douglas picking higher percentage & possibly immediate contributing players with the first 3 or 4 rounds. I think the team(especially with DC Williams & his manufacturing of pressure)can live next year with Jenkins and Basham)

I would just say relative to the draft - much will be revealed in this 2nd week of free agency. Such as if the team - for example(only) - signs CB Logan Ryan, OR J Clowney(doubtful), OR say a friendly 1(ONE) year deal with a vetaran OT( Jason Peters or even Beachum type) - same will give an indication as to what their draft thinking might be.

From what I read, Douglas wants a self-sustaining roster. His approach towards the OL during free agency seems to be him following through with that. With the exception of McGovern, these signees are temporary placeholders. It will be extremely important to drafting future cornerstones such as a LOT and at least 1 interior OL. I will not be surprised to see 2 of the top 4 picks be OL.

The OL free agency signings to date are with a couple of exceptions(as Parcells' used to say) seemingly "hold the fort" players - with that said - Douglas may view the rebuilding of the OL as a 2 year draft project and not just this one.

I think you are right. And Douglas recognizes the importance of C with a young QB like Darnold, so he felt getting McGovern, who isn't too much older than a kid coming out of college, would provide continuity for him. Going into last year, I had argued for an overhaul of the OL with younger talent. The only place I thought it best to go a bit more veteran was C because of Darnold, and perhaps a little bit LT.

We have to assume - Douglas is really really tight with Gase(who seemingly lobbied hard for him to get the GM job and a huge contract) - and - Douglas has to know anything less then say a 500 season(this year) and Gase's seat is going to become very hot creating a most awkward situation for Douglas - that is why I think - these first 4 picks(this year) are going to be picks that Douglas thinks can best offer as much immediate help as possible as opposed to 2 years from now.

If he is that tight with Gase, perhaps part of his agreement was that Gase would be around at least two years. Regardless of what you think about Gase, he was given a really weak roster in all of the key areas by MM and his predecessor. Lets see what the team becomes with two guys on the same page before we plan on tearing it all down again. We've waited this long...

well you may be right - but regardless - it would certainly seem that a 5(or arguably even a 6 win) season, the outcry for Gase's scalp is going to be deafening particularly with Darnold playing in his 3rd year

You're absolutely right, there will be calls for his scalp if the Jets win 9 games. There are calls already and we haven't even played a game.
