Joe Douglas praise thread.

It seems that every year there has been a FIRE (insert present GM) now!!!!!! Started already, so I thought I would start a well deserved counter to that. And I’ll start with something I mentioned in a previous thread:

I wish I had a daughter that I could give to him.

I love the way he maneuvered the board. Really happy with everything except his 4th round picks. Really disliked the qb pick there and not impressed with the running back. We needed another WR or a CB in that round. Overall, I give him B. Still very confident that we have a good GM for the first time in decades.

I give him an A. I think our receiver room now has real potential and we needed to bring in a QB to groom for the #2 slot and this one has real potential. I also think our CB position has improved especially when you look at the undrafted free agent signings. The running back to compete with Powell who is going on 32 not a bad idea either.

I wasn't impressed with the RB until I watched his highlights, then I started liking the pick a lot. I saw a lot of things I liked on his tape.

As far as the QB goes, I saw some really good arm talent there, and I accept the school of thought that developing another young QB is always valuable, whether he ends up as a strong backup or a good trade chip.

Overall, excited about the direction the franchise is taking under JD. He said he believed in building from the trenches out, and that's what he is doing. Any era in which the Jets have been good, they have had a dominant O-Line, and we are headed back there. I also love the talent I see in Mims. He appears to have very strong quick hands, there were a bunch of catches on his tape where he suddenly reached out and snatched the ball before the defender had a chance to make a play on it.

We drafted players of need and potential starters at that. Even if most of these players don’t pan out at least he drafted positions/players of need. Same with the free agency moves. It all made sense and great job GM!

I really liked what Douglas did. These picks were Parcells-like, very Ravens like too. A lot of really good football players and leaders - and they took the most athletically talented players at their respective positions with the top 2 picks. I was concerned about the Becton pick because of the character issues, but after listening to interviews with the kid, and Douglas's call with him, I feel a lot better. I think he just made a stupid mistake and Douglas will get him going on the right track.

The rest of the draft is littered with players that are going to be tough, hard-nosed leaders that can play, fit our schemes well and can contribute. Great example is the CB/S from Cal. The kid is just a good versatile football player. And don't laugh, but the Punter could be a great pick - if he is like Shane Lechler, which is the player he's compared to, that's amazing. We're going to be in a lot of close games, and field position is huge.

And Perine I think was very underrated. He's a very solid back. He will surprise people on this board.

I thought he maneuvered up and down the board well, and filled needs across the board. Chances are that not all of these guys will work out, but I would be surprised if 75% of them don't stick around for the next several years and turn out to be good pros.

It's not a draft littered with stars and big names, but it's a draft that fits the plan for this team, and that's what we need. Great job by Douglas.

I have already sacrificed livestock in his name. In fact, I'll have a nice, big ribeye as a sacrifice tonight.

It wasn't spectacular, except in two big areas of need - LT and an elite top-end WR. But what Douglas has done this offseason is he has built a roster. He has brought in football players, not just guys who play football.

My guess is he ends up with at least 3 long-term starters out of this draft, maybe 4 (not including a long-term punter), and several solid role players. If that happens, that's pretty impressive.

Plus, with all the one-year contracts the Jets signed this past offseason, they will be in a position to load up on compensatory picks for the future.

I really enjoy how many of his picks were team captains at their perspective schools. 4-5 of them from what I read through the player profiles. He is building the locker room as much as he is building the team.
this is huge. and something that has been missing for a long time. we need smart hard working leaders. Thrilled that Douglas realized this ! and if 4-5 were captains, you know its no coincidence that Douglas picked them

The best part...BEST part...of this whole thing is that Douglas fleeced the Patriots - twice. First, he robbed them when they traded far more than market value for a decent TE. The Jets then used one of the fourth round picks they got from the Pats on the QB the Pats likely had as their guy in Morgan.

One can only imagine how Belichick felt about that out on Nantucket.

Couple of things said earlier that resonated with me:
- "Overall, excited about the direction the franchise is taking under JD. He said he believed in building from the trenches out, and that's what he is doing. Any era in which the Jets have been good, they have had a dominant O-Line, and we are headed back there." (Reallybigfan)
- "It's not a draft littered with stars and big names, but it's a draft that fits the plan for this team, and that's what we need." (LIJETFAN); and
- "It wasn't spectacular, except in two big areas of need - LT and an elite top-end WR. But what Douglas has done this offseason is he has built a roster. He has brought in football players, not just guys who play football." (Sack Exchange).

This isn't a one-year rebuild, but I feel comfortable that JD is a guy we can trust to do it the right way.

I am almost positive he could have got the QB way later so I'm not a fan of that pick at all. First two picks were exactly what we needed. The rest of the picks are probably not going to make an impact, but I think JD did a great job with the OL in FA.

part of what now needs to happen, is that the team needs to be behind the coach and the coach needs to be credible for that to happen. I hope Gase is that guy. We'll sure have a much better idea by the end of the season given what he will now have to work with

During his initial press conf., he postulated (conceptualized actually) about building a team. That resonated with me because I finally felt like this guy gets it and he has a plan. My hope was that the JETS would be a better team just having him and you know what we are. His manipulations during the draft were deft and logical... he not only drafted the people that were high on his board but also balanced that with NEED. Not easy to do, yet he did it with same patience he showed during FA. He stuck to the plan and executed it. We have our GM... Tk God!

BTW - here is a shout out to the JJ Bros who get a lot of heat (rightly so) but give them credit for not accepting NO when they hired him.

Finally, I have one concern and that is can AG/OC /PC get his act together? IMHO, there will be no more excuses for him not have an effective, efficient and competitive O. Lets hope my concern is unfounded and unwarranted... but I doubt it. AS usual, in this case, I am hoping for the best but expecting less.

I got to see it on the field first but just like the Cardinals this year they both look to be an A this year in the draft.

Good chance the Jets don't win a game this year..

Douglas did a great job - no telling how the picks will work out, but as far as working his big night I give him an A+. And for all you haters on the QB pick - it makes sense. Darnold has never played a full season - we need a backup. Darnold is in his third year and may not be a franchise QB - we need a backup. Good teams draft QB's, develop them, and sometimes trade them - we need a backup. 4th round is not a bad time to get one - sure we need other things - but if not now then when especially if Douglas likes him - you pick him, it is only a 4th and heck most 4th round guys dont start so its not like he subbed a starter - besides he also earned those picks - house money =)
