Josh McCown will begin training camp as the Jets’ starter, but he will have to fight to keep the job.

“Josh will go into it as the starter, and by the end of training camp, we’ll see who the starter is,” Jets coach Todd Bowles, via Calvin Watkins of Newsday. “It’s competition at every position, even with the two young safeties. Whether it’s Leonard Williams or anybody else, everybody has competition going in. If they’re not performing well enough, they won’t be the starter at the end of August, and that goes for every position. So that’s never changed since I’ve been here.”

The Jets also have Teddy Bridgewater, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty on their roster and are expected to draft a quarterback with the third overall choice.

The team tried to replace McCown in training camp last year, giving more reps to Hackenberg and Petty in hopes of getting younger at the position. Neither won the job, and McCown started 13 games before breaking his hand.

“You want a long-term answer at every position, not just quarterback,” Bowles said. “So we’re trying to find guys and Josh, again, he played well last year, and we got the addition of Teddy and we’ll see what he can do and the young guys are still practicing. But you want a guy that has stability at the position for a long time.”

At this point, I don't think we have a choice. Unless of course either Bridgewater or the rookie light it up in pre-season.

why do you feel bridgewater or the rookie have to "light it up" in pre season to beat out mccown?? he's a 39 year old JAG..

it's absurd & its even trickled down to our fan base, for whatever reason.....

my question is why is this allowed by ownership?? we all know bowles can tell maccagnan to kick rocks.. so this horse shit falls at the feet of ownership..

We think about these things from a fans perspective. “I want to see what Bridgewater can do, or put the rookie in now and get the learning curve started”.

But from a coach’s perspective he’s gotta play the guy who’s earned it. McCown played pretty well last season until he got hurt. We all see him for what he is: a bridge QB. Teddy Bridgewater is a great unknown who hasn’t proven anything yet, and until he shows that he’s past the injury and can outperform McCown, he’s 2nd on the depth chart. Same goes for the rookie. Doesn’t matter who it is. Even the most NFL ready guy like Rosen will have to show he’s better than McCown right now to earn the job. Understanding all the plays, chemistry with receivers, understanding NFL defenses. It’s a lot, and I don’t expect any rookie to be ready right away.

We can call it BS all we want. It’s not going to change the fact that you have to beat out the guy ahead of you.
