Josh McDaniels withdraws from Colts' coaching job

Reading reports that Kraft gave him some more $$$, speculation that he's next in line there. Have to believe Belichik is going to step down in a year or two, otherwise I don't see how he could stay.

Josh McDaniels withdrew from an agreement to become the Indianapolis Colts' head coach and will remain the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator, sources informed of the situation confirmed to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo on Tuesday. McDaniels' decision was confirmed by the Colts.

"After agreeing to contract terms to become the Indianapolis Colts' new head coach, New England Patriots assistant coach Josh McDaniels this evening informed us that he would not be joining our team," the Colts said in a statement. "Although we are surprised and disappointed, we will resume our head coaching search immediately and find the right fit to lead our team and organization on and off the field."

The surprising development comes after the Colts announced Tuesday morning they had reached an agreement for McDaniels to become their new coach. The team even scheduled a news conference for Wednesday.

ESPN first reported McDaniels staying in New England.

Compounding the issue is that multiple assistant coaches have signed Coltscontracts thinking they'd be working under McDaniels. Former Cowboys linebackers coach Matt Eberflus, who was pegged as McDaniels' defensive coordinator, is among those under contract already. Garafolo reported on NFL Total Accessthat all indications are Eberflus -- and possibly other coaches -- will remain with the Colts under whomever they hire.

Rapoport added that McDaniels was even offering Colts jobs to prospective assistants on Tuesday before changing his mind about the job.

Multiple reports last month had pegged McDaniels as the Colts' next coach. He was considered one of the top NFL head coaching candidates heading into this offseason. Over the weekend, ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reported McDaniels was thinking about staying in New England.

The big question is why has McDaniels chosen to stay in New England after being so close to his first head-coaching gig since his stint with the Denver Broncos from 2009-10? The reversal comes two days after the Patriots' 41-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

McDaniels won five Super Bowls in New England since joining Bill Belichick's staff in 2001. His tutelage of Tom Brady has played a role in the Patriots' success during the Brady-Belichick era.

The Colts were hoping some of that success would rub off on their franchise, which hasn't made the postseason since losing to the Patriots in the now infamous 2014 AFC Championship Game.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard now faces the unenviable task of trying to find a coach with the prime pool of coaching candidates no longer available. Getting a new coach into Indy before the start of the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine likely will be a priority for Ballard.

Just watching it on NFL network. Wow! I think this tops when BioShock shafted the Jets.

Let me speculate. Belichick threw the superbowl and is leaving.

Thing is, if Belichick were to do that then it is because he wants to screw kraft, in which case he would wait until all coaching prospects are gone and then quit.

This is so f'd up. Maybe Kraft is going to screw belichick. Get rid of him just as he nears the end of his usefulness. Like belichick does to all his players. This is nuts.

Only thing for sure is colts are screwed and th

Coincidentally they are the ones who reported bradys ball deflation

To quote Bart Scott "Can't Wait" to see what happens

Watching replay of Superbowl right now. Hope the Eagles win when I watch it too. One thing for sure is "Cheetahs can't stop a nosebleed" . Very unbelichickean. He threw the damn game

This is a plenty of time wide open fest for brady. No one has gotten anywhere near him and it's the 4th quarter. Looks like he's writing a sequel to his book in the pocket. Wow!

Ok. Just finished watching the superbowl and the cheetahs lost again even with me watching. Glad I didn't watch it live cause it sure as neck looked like a typical cheetah win in the last minutes. Brady had so much time and his receivers were so open. That was ridiculous.

McDaniels has to be getting the NE job. He'd better, because no other team will ever trust him to make him their HC.

Thing is, when Belichick and Brady leave, the Pats are going to crash hard. They've traded draft picks, they've deferred salaries, and they got rid of their QB of the future. They mortgaged the future for the present, and the future is going to look bleak for them. McDaniels is going to be stuck with an old roster, no cap space, no QB, and no picks. He'll struggle as much as he did with Denver, if not more.

After further review " the Colt's did not maintain possession of McDaniels and fumbled the HC out the back of the end zone. By rule , the result of the play , is a touch back and the Patriots will receive possession of the HC" ....

Agreed. He just hitched his wagon to the Patriots for life. I don't think any other NFL franchise would touch this guy after pulling this stunt.
Nor should they.

Make no mistake, this whole thing is a warning from kraft that you don't mess with bradys deflated balls.

I'm starting to think that I have been wrong. belichick is not the evil emperor. kraft is. belichick is just his pawn.

Surely kraft promised mcdaniels the cheatahs job. For now. if anything changes, mcdaniels will be out with the trash

Anyone seen the napkin on which he wrote "I decline the offer as HC of Colts" ?

Typical Patriots behavior. Sort of like Belichick did to the Jets except that Belichick waited a whole day before resigning.

I've always thought Kraft and Belichick are like the Emperor and Darth Vader. None of this surprises me. It's typical Patriots as Gramaoh said. McDaniels has pissed off a lot of people around the league I'm sure. Not that he probably cares...but he has no change of getting a HC job anywhere else. No owner is going to even bother interviewing him. If he wants to be a head coach, the Pats are his only option. He boxed himself into a proverbial corner. Which is fine, if that's what he wants to do. It's his career...

I feel bad for the Colts organization. Hopefully it will work out for the best for them, and they will kick the crap out of the Pats when they play them.
