Report: Delvin Breaux moves to first-team nickel cornerback Tuesday

The story behind Delvin Breaux seems to be getting more and more interesting as the offseason rolls on. While Breaux made some noise last week with a few big plays, they apparently didn't go unnoticed. Larry Holder of NOLA.com reported that during Tuesday's minicamp practice, Breaux was moved to the first-team defense.

"Breaux took nearly all of the snaps with the first-team defense as the nickel cornerback during Tuesday's minicamp practice. Breaux replaced a struggling Kyle Wilson in the slot after playing primarily on the outside during the first three weeks." Holder explained.
Sean Payton spoke about the move, as well as a few others that were made during the minicamp practice.

"The key is to get your best players on the field," Saints coach Sean Payton told NOLA.com Tuesday.

It's one thing to make plays, but another to be bumped up to the first-team this early on. The hype behind Breaux was interesting, but it's seeming like there's a good chance that he may be able to live up to that hype. Only time will tell, but he's off to a good start.

OOOOHHH... The 2010 draft, I'm still sick about it....I remember the guys that I wanted still... We missed on Dez Bryant, so I wanted McCourty... the others that I loved were Worlids, Navarro Bowman and Decker....Coulda, shoulda, woulda, SUX THOUGH

Maybe if he could have gotten his head turned more quickly he would have seen the kid coming up behind him on the depth chart.

What you are seeing now is the NFL career of a first round bust coming to an end.

This is the same pattern it always follows:

First the team that drafted said bust sticks with him a lot longer than they should have, because they had a first round pick invested in said bust, so they give him every chance to justify the selection or at least contribute as a role player, they even hang on when its at the candle lighting stage (i.e. going to church and lighting a candle in prayer, as in, PLEASE GOD, just make him a decent player so we don't look like complete idiots), and then, when even prayers and lighting candles doesn't work, they are finally forced to face the inevitable and cut bait.

The next phase is a lot shorter, but it usually follows this pattern too. Some team quickly scoops up said bust based on his prior first round pick credentials (even Vernon Gholston found another sucker), only that team does not have a first round pick invested in said bust, so his leash is a million times shorter at the next stop.

Next it quickly occurs to his new team that his old team had it right, THIS GUY STINKS, so first they drop him on the depth chart and next they drop him altogether, and he's back on the street hoping for at least one more sucker, uh, I mean one more chance. Sometimes that one more chance comes because the league is filled with HC's who believe they can get the best out of anybody, whereas their peers couldn't, so there's a 50-50 chance Wilson finds one more sucker, but either way, he already has one foot out the door.

Sounds like Geno...

Actually it will be Geno if he flops again in year three and with a much better supporting cast, much better receivers, and a terrific defense too, so he doesn't even need to score a ton of points to win games. He just needs to be decent, make a few big plays, and not give games to the other team with Pick 6's and killer INT's.

Anyway, if he fails again he will be looking at PHASE TWO of the above scenario I posted. He'll be on another team next year with a very short leash, but QB's can hang on as backups longer than the proverbial bust at other positions, especially if the QB has impressive physical tools like Geno, he can probably make a career for himself as a backup if he's satisfied with that and doesn't sulk, but if he fails this year his starting days are over.

this is a Kyle Wilson thread....... right?
Somehow every thread has a way of working its way back to Geno :)

NOT BY ME, at least until training camp and the preseason all we're doing is repeating ourselves on Geno, at this point there's nothing we can say that hasn't already been said, even what I posted above is just reiterating what I've already said elsewhere, but I took the bait and couldn't resist. :)

Well said and exactly what happened with Wilson, Gholston, Ducasse, Hill, and how many others on the Jets alone?

In that he's always had trouble turning his head, why is no coach smart enough to give him a shot at FS. That way he's looking forward or side to side. Lowery switched to FS and did very well because of his lack of speed. I think QB, LT & CB are the toughest positions in the NFL.

Sometimes all of us need to admit when we are wrong.

I was wrong about Kyle Wilson. He's terrible.

I was thrilled when the Jets drafted Coples in 2012. Even before the draft started he was the guy I wanted. I thought he was going to be something special. While I still think there is a chance for him to be dominant, to this point, he has not been up to the level I thought. So maybe I was wrong too!

I think the draft picks of the 2009 to 2014 were all, to some extent, compromised by bad coaching and by being shunted and moved around to positions, especially on defense, that did not fit their skills but fit some cast in concrete required position in Dad's dated defensive scheme of the 80s that we were desperately trying to recreate. This seriously deterred the development of Coples,.Allen, Davis and Pryor. For the offense draftees the coaching problem was a different one. The HC didn't know or care beans about offense and just threw guys out there with no coaching or development until they all failed.

Thankfully, those days are over and we have a new coaching regime dedicated to building their schemes and plays to fit the talents of the players they have

A refreshing change for the Jets
