Actually, pedestrian fatalities in NYC are WAY down from the time before cell phones became common. In the early 90's, there were more than 500 a year. In 2014 there were 132, the lowest number in a hundred years, down from 180 in 2013, which was a high number for the decade.

For sure - the New initiative send to be working, err err off to a record breaking high in January 2014...
BTW, the Times had an article saying that most are hit in the crosswalk while having the right of way.
I bet alot of people are taking pictures also..especially tourists around midtown
