and most of the time it is their own fault since they are on their phones BSing or trying to cross when they shouldnt..NYC is a challenge to navigate..have to be patient

Actually, pedestrian fatalities in NYC are WAY down from the time before cell phones became common. In the early 90's, there were more than 500 a year. In 2014 there were 132, the lowest number in a hundred years, down from 180 in 2013, which was a high number for the decade.

BTW, the Times had an article saying that most are hit in the crosswalk while having the right of way.
I bet alot of people are taking pictures also..especially tourists around midtown
I have no idea how/if it figures in, but I'm appalled at the number of people I see texting on the tunnel approaches and even driving on the city streets. It's like 1in 3 on the approaches. And on the streets, you see someone driving erratically and catch up to them and sure enough, they're texting. I feel this is the next big push, and unfortunately it's going to take a big tragedy, like someone plowing into a group of preschoolers or something before it gets the attention it deserves. I feel that this could easily be remedied with phone software/hardware too.
