With NFL free agency about to commence, the trade market for veteran quarterbacks will heat up as well. There are a lot of teams that need a new starter, as well as a starter for the future while the 2022 NFL Draft is lacking quarterback talent. Hence, there could be some teams desperate for veteran starters.
One starter who has not received much trade speculation is the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff. With the Lions having not yet committed to Goff as their long-term starter, teams that can’t get the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, or Russell Wilson might kick the tires on Goff. Washington, Pittsburgh, Denver, Carolina, Tampa Bay and New Orleans are in the market for a starting quarterback. Even if Rodgers, Watson, and Wilson all get traded, some of these teams will still be without a starter. Goff is only a few years removed from helping to lead his team to the Super Bowl while also still being young, and signed relatively affordably for another season. With the Lions in the midst of a giant rebuild, they could consider trading Goff for draft picks to help add more young talent to their roster.
Listening to some team sources, that sounds unlikely because the Lions would not give Goff away. They say it would take more than a second-round pick for them to consider parting with their starting quarterback. Given Goff’s performance over the past few seasons, it seems unlikely a team would be willing to trade a first-round pick for him. Therefore, he is likely going to be the starter in the Motor City for what could be the most critical season of Goff’s career.
