Looks like we got a new Kick Returner

The New York Jets claimed wide receiver Lucky Whitehead off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday.

Whitehead, 25, was placed on waivers this week after news broke that he had been charged with shoplifting in West Virginia in June. Whitehead proclaimed his innocence, which was confirmed by the Prince William County Police Department on Wednesday when it confirmed the man arrested was not Whitehead.

The police department said that the man arrested for taking items from a Wawa on June 22 without paying didn't have identification and had verbally provided the name, date of birth and Social Security number of Rodney Darnell Whitehead Jr. to police officers, who checked the information through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles database.

Police also compared the DMV photo on file with the man in custody and "acted in good faith that, at the time, the man in custody was the same man matching the information provided."

Despite the fact Whitehead was cleared, the Cowboys said they stood by their move and cited a pattern of behavior in justifying it.

Whitehead told the Dallas Morning News that he was "blindsided" and "no one [in Cowboys management] had my back in the whole situation. I knew about it at, what? 12:45. By 2:30, I'm released.

"Let's not sugarcoat anything. I was pretty much being called a liar," Whitehead told the Dallas Morning News in a telephone interview.

The Jets have been seeking to improve their kick return situation this offseason. Whitehead had returned kickoffs and punts for the Cowboys in each of his two seasons with the team. He returned 44 punts for 305 yards (6.9 yard average) and 33 kickoffs for 846 yards (25.6 yard average).

Jalin Marshall was the Jets' leading punt and kickoff returner last season, but he was inconsistent and faces a four-game suspension for PEDs. The only other experienced returner on the roster is running back Jordan Todman, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts. In the spring, the Jets auditioned several current players at both spots.

There's no financial risk for the Jets, as Whitehead is due to make a non-guaranteed $615,000. He will join a young, unproven receiving corps.

The Jets waived wide receiver Devin Street on Wednesday to make room for Whitehead on the roster.

Whitehead's agent, David Rich, told ESPN's Todd Archer that he will consult with Whitehead and Whitehead's family over what direction to pursue next, either legally or with the NFL Players Association.
"Right now he just wants to play football," Rich said. "He had a challenge ahead of him, and he was ready for the challenge. He was tweeting 20 minutes before the first practice how excited he was. It's been a tough 24 hours. I think it will make him stronger."

"We got made an example of," Rich added. "They needed to make an example of somebody to get those boys' heads on straight. It is calculated. But I get it. It's business ... [coach] Jason Garrett said it. They needed to do what's in the best interest of the Cowboys. I think they're wrong, but I get it."

Whitehead made headlines last week when he announced on social media that his dog, Blitz, was kidnapped and being held for ransom. He later announced on social media that the dog had been returned unharmed.

Young, talented, and after how Dallas treated him, he comes here with something to prove. These are the additions that the Jets need to make. Of course, the move will get mocked, whereas if the Pats did it, they'd be lauded.

i say, whoever wants to mock this move, let them..

i was going to list the upside of the signing but what's the point?? what's really needs to be added (aside from maybe his age) to what both the article & you brought up??

bottom line, anyone who wants to be taken seriously will call this signing what it is.. the jets filled two starting ST positions with a 25 year old, for essentially nothing..

Exactly. It fills a pretty strong need with a young guy, not some older stopgap, and it came with no compensation and at the veteran's minimum. It's a good deal, period, whether it works out or not.

Cowboys got rid of him because they have the talent to fill his spot. He is better than Marshall.

who, as you & almost all of us here know, is suspended for 25% of the season..

like sack mentioned, this move makes sense even if the kid flops..

Definitely doesn't hurt. He has some ability as a KR. I know they didn't always trust him in Dallas on PR.

The other good thing for him is he going to get a lot of kickoffs to return with the Jets.

One of the most disgraceful articles I've read in a while. If the Jets had not taken him, they would have been bashed for putting character over talent. LOLJets is so fashionable these days - which makes this no different than ever.

BR is reporting out 4-6 weeks, so if Lucky is the guy he should be back between week 2-4.

After initially being quite impressed Jalin Marshall, as the season wore on and the dropsies continued, I came to realize he's barely clinging to a roster spot. So I ask the question a loud:

Does Lucky Whitehead permanently take Marshalls roster spot?

Look at the reasoning for such a move:

1) I'm certain Toilet and the CS must realize they need competition because we're sunk if we have all our eggs in the Marshall basket? He's been way too inconsistent.

2) It could be debated if Whitehead is a better player, but there's no denying their responsibilities are the same. Marshall catches passes and plays ST, Whitehead was the same guy in Dallas.

3) Whitehead could not have asked for a better opportunity. He's doing the same thing as in Dallas. He'll get an exclusive tryout period to unseat Marshall.

4) Whitehead catches passes and the Jets WR's have been a big, fat disappointment in TC. He's got yet another golden opportunity to be even more involved in the offense than he was in Dallas.

So I truly wonder if Whitehead gets cut after 4 weeks or does Marshall never come back from his drug suspension?
