Mac on Paxton Lynch (insight on Petty) and the fate of Geno

So Mac called Lynch an intriguing prospect with a a really good skill set and reminded him of Petty.... Stated he likes Petty quite a bit. Also talked about a QB pipeline..... I love Mac's thinking.

My take:

He is higher on Petty than any of these reports say and he knows he got a steal in the 4th round last year. I think he likes Lynch and is pretty high on him. Probably feels both guys can fit in and run Gaileys system. He knows finding a QB long term is important. I think he is ready to draft Lynch, sign Fitz and cut Geno.

Fitz starts this year. And he lets Petty and Lynch battle to start in 2017. I don't think drafting Lynch at 20 will automatically crown him the QB of the future. I think they are high on Petty and they are going to let competition drive the cream to the top... Petty or Lynch. And will probably draft another guy next year.

Just my thoughts. What do you guys think?

Like I stated to Elias; Paxton Lynch might be compared to Bryce Petty but would come in a year behind Petty on development... If Petty is one to two years away from competing for the starting job then Lynch would be two to three years away from competing...

Lynch has size but his development is raw, he is being projected as a first round selection but is a second round quarterback... He checks boxes for his size, athleticism, arm talent, field vision and appetite for football...

Now his weaknesses or needs of improvement:

 • Accuracy
 • Consistency
 • Snap under center
 • Footwork in the pocket
 • Footwork dropping back
 • Throwing mechanics
 • Understanding his reads
 • Internal clock
 • Touch
 • Timing
 • Calling the plays in the huddle
 • Basic Fundamentals

This kid is very raw, and would need a lot of work and might be too much for our team which is struggling for a average to good starter now...

Do you mean that literally? As in, Lynch is a 2nd round prospect while Petty was only a 4th rounder? If so, Lynch should at least represent a POTENTIAL upgrade at QB, and if so I'm willing to take a chance on him at 20 instead of 51 (it's still a WAY smaller price to pay than the guys jumping up to 1 and 2).

However, if Lynch and Petty are interchangeable (especially with Petty having an extra year in the system), I'd rather try to win the lottery with a mid-round pick instead of spending a top one on it . . .

Bryce Petty last year was projected as a late second early third round prospect that fell into the fourth round because of other prospects taken basically need... There wasn't a need at that point for many teams to grab a quarterback that being said yes I believe Paxton Lynch is a year behind development of where Bryce Petty is now...

Of the mid round quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Jacoby Brissett are more ready with their body of work to compete side by side with Petty moving forward...

Lynch's basic fundamentals are below many quarterbacks in the mid rounds, and that should hurt his stock but people are stammered by his size, athleticism and willingness to grow but is that enough?

Petty going nto his Senior year was projected as a late 1st Rd'er.. His back injury had him slip to 2nd/3rd and we got lucky he slipped all the way to the 4th come draft.

Which Lunch is a guy people can see going as high as 15 or slipping into the 2nd

If we can re-sign Fitzpatrick and draft a QB like Lynch, I'd consider that a much better situation at QB. And I never believed the speculation that the Jets were disappointed in Petty. There was never any indication of that from what I was reading.

This sounds like Petty last year except for accuracy, throwing mechanics...

Petty was capable of calling plays in the huddle, his timing and touch were better than what Lynch is now... His basic fundamentals made him a worthy candidate for us to draft and develop with hope he could develop into a starter... His main problem was and is his focus when dropping back he is worried about the pressure and gets flustered which could lead to bad decision making at this level... Basically right now that is the only thing holding Bryce back from competing for the starting job...

Coming out of Baylor Petty had to learn taking snaps from under center, but he was comfortable in himself to accomplish that which he has to this point... His footwork after the snap dropping back is good and his set up and release has been refined... So if he can show that under pressure he is unaffected and with his instincts can execute the game plan he will be ready to compete for the starting job... Figure this preseason will be his test to prove he is ready to start preparing for a chance to take the job...

I think we all want him to succeed, and from what we have seen of him in live action we are hoping he continues to be that player... I expect with a strong off season, training camp the team depending on the Fitzpatrick situation might have to give this kid a chance during preseason to take the job...

100% agreed and really what I've been clamoring for since the offseason started. That would be a great thing for the future of the Jets. It's called out with the old an in with the new. Geno Smith is a horrible QB and everyone knows it. So if the Jets did draft Lynch? Well, the Jets are not going to carry 4 QB's on the roster, that doesn't make any sense. They will cut Geno and honestly I think that move is long overdue.

Actually before the Senior Bowl he was considered to have a late first round grade, early 2nd.

He showed an inability to play under center during Senior Bowl week. He fell to the 4th.

Last year in camp he had improved dramatically under center. Not saying he was ready to start but particularly in the Atlanta game, which he played 3 quarters in, he looked like he belonged.

Judging by the Ranger game pics it appears he is still attached at the hip to Fitz. I'm really excited to see him in camp this year. If he made the same level of improvement he made from the Senior Bowl, to the Atlanta game last year it might get interesting.

If not hopefully they will draft another mid round QB, like Hogan, or Jones to step in as the developmental guy. petty will still have one more year to get it right, but he's got to be ready to go by 17, or he'll be gone.
