Mike Maccagnan already has made one trip to Eugene, Oregon, to check out Marcus Mariota. That was Mariota's pro day, March 12. Maccagnan is planning another trip at the end of the month. This time, the New York Jets' general manager will be accompanied by coach Todd Bowles.

The Jets have scheduled a private workout for March 28.

When a team dispatches its GM and head coach for a private workout, it usually means they're very interested in a player -- or it could be an orchestrated smokescreen. You never know this time of year.

Nevertheless, the Jets are performing due diligence. So are the other quarterback-needy teams. Mariota already has worked out for the Tennessee Titans, and he reportedly has private workouts scheduled with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Diego Chargers.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Maccagnan declined to comment on Mariota or Jameis Winston, saying he doesn't want to let other teams know what he's thinking. He acknowledged he will attend Winston's pro day March 31, but that was it.

Chances are, Winston will be picked No. 1 overall by the Bucs, but there's a chance Mariota could slip to the Jets.

Don't see a whole lot of reasons the Jets would benefit from doing an elaborate smoke screen that would consume 3 days of their time in their busiest time of the year.

The only thing it would provoke would be for teams, that really wanted Mariota, to trade up in front of them.

The Titans have done the same thing...as have the Bucs. Standard operating procedure, IMO, except for those 2 teams the owner met Mariota. I didnt catch Woody participating here.

you need to assess this guy carefully - and given the disconnect between his college experience and his pro role that is hard to do merely from video etc

whether you want him, stumble into him or deal the right to get him, you have to have a sound evaluation of this guy

The further that Woody stays away from football operations, the better I like it. The fact that Woody isn't going certainly doesn't mean they are not interested.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Quarterback Marcus Mariota spent 90 minutes in a meeting room and 45 minutes on the field with the Tennessee Titans in a private workout after his pro day on the Oregon campus in Eugene on Thursday.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt was impressed with Mariota, who also worked out in front of Titans offensive coordinator Jason Michael, quarterbacks coach John McNulty and general manager Ruston Webster.

"He did a nice job for us; he was sharp in both the classroom and on the field," Whisenhunt told ESPN.com. "In the private workout, he handled everything we gave him well."

The Titans own the No. 2 overall pick in the draft on April 30, and likely will be in position to select Mariota. They have to decide if they want to move on from Zach Mettenberger to the Heisman Trophy winner, draft at another position or trade back.

Mariota's session with the Titans was with the same five receivers and center that helped him during his pro day work. Whisenhunt said Mariota wasn’t phased by much, showed good recall, processed things well and showed he understood protections and reads.

The Bucs work out on March 16 was at their facility. Yeah the owner was probably there. The Jets are flying to Oregon.

Whether Woody is there or not means zilch about their intrest

I'll have to disagree. if the guy who authorizes the pick and money isnt there, then Jets "influencers" (as we call them in white collar world) are there, not the "decision makers." Mac and Bowles will likely need to take the intel from the meeting and take it back to woody to convince him one direction or the other...making them influencers and woody the decision maker...because they need his approval. Sorry, but franchise Qb decisions for any team goes all the way up the owner...if he's not there, that tells me a lot.

My real point is I think the Jets are going through the motions with Mariota. i dont think its too serious and 3 days of that in mid March with the draft being at the end of April doesnt convince me they are doing more than just going through the motions. if he's in New jersey shaking hands with Woody on the jets practice field mid April like Sanchez was, well, Mariota is in play.

I think this sums it up well:

"Seriously, though, Maccagnan continually emphasized this offseason that he doesn't want to reach in the draft, simply based on filling a need at a position. So Maccagnan's decision at No. 6 all depends, obviously, on who is available, and also whether he values Mariota over an edge pass rusher like Dante Fowler Jr. or Randy Gregory."

OK I guess I can't argue with what
" we call them in white collar world)."

I guess that means that Winston might fall to the Jets because the ""influencers" (as we call them in white collar world)" were there for Mariota.

Cool, I like Winston a lot

Winston has met the Bucs owner twice already. He's going #1

I said I can't argue with what your saying. After all your a white collar worker who has his on cube . :)

:) I have my own cube...that's a good one. Good response.

Notice in this article the push is by the Glazers...and how little it matters what Lovie or the GM thinks of Winston, the key is what the Glazers think. I said "GM" in the previous sentence for a reason. Do you know who the Bucs GM is? Jason Licht is the answer to that question. Notice his name isnt even mentioned...because when it comes to franchise QB, the owners have to be onboard, or it doesn't matter what the coach and GM thinks. We can agree to disagree. But in my experience, you always find the answer to these debates by following the money, and whoever controls the money, is the real decision maker.

According to a new report, you can add the Bucs owner Joel Glazer and his family to those fully on board with the addition of Winston.

"After speaking with sources in Tampa Bay and around the league, we've learned that the Buccaneers' owners, the Glazers, are comfortable with Winston, and they are on board with the Buccaneers drafting him with the first-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft," writes Charlie Campbell of Walter Football.

"Sources say that entering the interview process, the Glazers want Winston. If he doesn't do poorly in the interviews and stays out of trouble leading up to the draft, Winston will be the first pick. The Glazers have a huge desire for a franchise quarterback, and have wanted that asset for years. Some sources say that the Glazers believe that Winston is that caliber of quarterback, and they want him to lead a resurgence in Tampa Bay like he did at Florida State."

For months now, every one has been saying that Winston is going to the Bucs, you seemed to put some special significance in the fact that an owner meets with a player, or doesn't.

He met, according to your post, with Mariota. I'm just questioning the significance of that meeting. Or don't think it matters if Woody goes to Oregon or not. Woody is a different owner then the Glazers. He is also a different owner then Dan Snyder, or Crazy Al Davis was.

Some owners believe in, designated responsibility, and some owners feel compelled to micro manage.

Woody hasn't been a micro manager in the past.

Where are you getting 3 days from? They were in attendance with many other teams for his pro day and have a scheduled private meeting on the 28th. That's it.

in the past, rightly or wrongly, woody has been accused of being a meddling owner. personally i think those accusations were off-base, but really have no way of proving or disproving this.

that said, i'm happy he isn't gonna be part of the contingent going out to meet mariota. hopefully this represents the fact that he has given full and complete control to macc and bowles and the football professional. and imo, one cannot read anything into their intention to draft mariota or not based on the presence (or not) of woody in the jets traveling contingent

You believe Woody has given a first time HC and first time GM full control? Your head, not your heart. You believe the guy who owns J&J has done such a thing?

They have to get there and get back. For a West Coast trip, on conventional air lines it will eat up the better part of 3 days. At least it does for me.

yes, i believe it. i think woody relies on the people he puts in charge to run his business and isn't meddling with draft/player decisions. i can't say whether he meddled in the past, but i would think after bringing in casserly and wolf to run his GM search, that he learned that owners should let the football professional make the football decisions.

and woody doesn't own J&J. he inherited a nice chunk of it from his family, but has nothing to do with the business of J&J. woody runs a private investment shop (thanks to inherited money) and owns the jets.

Bucs may have concerns about Mariota’s laid-back personality

Quarterback Jameis Winston presents concerns regarding his off-field personality. Quarterback Marcus Mariota may present concerns regarding his on-field personality.

Via JoeBucsFan.com, Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune recently explained during an appearance with WHBO-AM that the Buccaneers have misgivings about Mariota and his laid-back nature.

“The other thing that [the Bucs] are not a big fan of, and you’re going to hear more about this, they are not big fans of his personality,” Cummings said. “And you’ve got one very engaging guy with loads of charisma. He’s likeable when you get around him, in Jameis Winston. And then you’ve got another guy who’s very introverted, very quiet. He doesn’t really command your attention when you’re around him, a very quiet soft-spoken guy.

“The Bucs are looking at it and saying, you know, ‘I got a guy here that kind of grabs you by the throat when he’s in the huddle and says, ‘We’re going guys. We’ve got 82 yards to go. We’ve got a minute and 12 seconds to do it. We’re going to get there.’ And then you’ve got another guy who, I don’t know what he says in the huddle, but it doesn’t come across that way, at least according to scouts it doesn’t.

“So I think the Bucs are in the camp that they’re a little bit concerned about that guy, not the face of the franchise, the leader of the football team,” Cummings said. “I think they want the leader who has more natural leadership abilities.”

It’s a fair point, but weren’t folks saying the same thing last year about Teddy Bridgewater? Besides, it may be better to have a soft-spoken guy who leads by example than a guy with a propensity to stand on a table and yell an obscene phrase.

Despite Winston’s past issues, the Bucs appear to have no qualms about him. Based on Cummings’ remarks, the Bucs seem to be more concerned about the guy who has done nothing to make anyone concerned about him ever getting in any trouble.

If nothing else, it’ll make for an even more interesting comparison as the two men adapt to the NFL.
