Mike Maccagnan says Jets will be 'very active' in free agency

Unlike his predecessor, Mike Maccagnan is planning to take an aggressive approach in free agency.

"Building through the draft is ideally what I'd like to do, but we'll very active in free agency," the New York Jets' new general manager said Tuesday via the team.

Maccagnan, who will be formally introduced with Todd Bowles in an 11 a.m. news conference Wednesday, touched briefly on his team-building philosophy. He said his objective is to fill "some" needs in free agency, allowing him to take a best-available-player approach to the draft -- basically, the Mike Tannenbaum model.

John Idzik tried it a different way, emphasizing the draft and using free agency as a supplement. That didn't work out so well.

Before we anoint Maccagnan as Spender Mike, it's important to note that he's required to dole out a lot of money. There's something called the "89 percent Rule."

The collective bargaining agreement requires teams to spend 89 percent of the salary cap in cash over four-year periods, from 2013 to 2016 and 2017 to 2020. In 2014, the Jets were 30th in spending ($106.295 million) and are below the 89-percent threshold since 2013 at 84.56 percent, according to CBSSports.com.

In other words, the Jets probably will have to spend a good chunk of the projected $40 million in cap space to remain on track for compliance.

Maccagnan didn't have too much to say about his quarterback situation. Asked if he likes Geno Smith, he said, "I do like Geno in terms of aspects of his play," adding that he hasn't had enough time to form a definitive evaluation. Maccagnan said he's looking forward to getting acquainted with Smith.

There's a trick to working free agency and not everyone can do it well, even if they want to be big players in free agency.

1. You have to map out your strategy well in advance, your priority free agents, Plan B and C's, and roster fillers.

2. Then, the moment the clock strikes midnight, you have to execute that plan at warped speed, speed & aggression.

3. Get the guys you want in your building first, then never let them leave without a contract.

If you can't do those three things, and you can't do 2 & 3 without 1, then you will lose in free agency every time.

That said, it sounds like the spirit is willing, but I need to see Mac actually work free agency like a boss.

That's a great strategy to use if you have one, tops 2 players that you have isolated as must have. In the first hours of FA history has shown us that teams over pay players. That's OK as long as the players are young (27 tops 28) and you really need/want them. You can't miss on these guys, they are going to be expensive. In the Jets case I would target a top CB. Haven't looked to see who's out there yet. It won't be Revis. Guaranteed. I might put a guard in that category also.

Would also pick up Cro for about 4 million again. Think he will sign. Believe he wants to be a Jet again, and he's off a pretty good season.

Have a feeling Gailey is going to want Fitzpatrick if he comes available, I prefer Matt Moore, but what ever.

Then sit back and see what happens with WR's and RT's

I'd be willing to bet they go after a veteran CB. If they don't pursue a veteran QB in Free agency it's safe to assume were picking up a QB in the draft. Either way I'm looking forward to whatever happens at this point. Free Agency is always interesting.

I'd be willing to bet they pick up a veteran QB, a FA CB, and a QB in the draft if the right guy is available. Don't forget Simms signed an extension. Maybe we'll find out if he has anything. If not, he's gone. I have a feeling there is actually going to be a QB competition in camp this year.

If Smith wins it, good for him.

I wouldnt be against a veteran QB. There's gonna be some legit guys available this year. And I agree on the Simms part. He deserves a chance to compete if anybody.

I'd take Cutler over Smith but for some reason I could see the Jets going after Hoyer. Cutler or Hoyer is an upgrade.

Hoyer 56% completions, pass
He's better than Geno. That was the point being made. His team won an acceptable amount of games. I'm sick of Geno's interceptions. Notice how Bowles and Macaggnan got real evasive when Geno's name came up. They know he can't take this team where it needs to go.
