Former Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau said during a radio interview with WOR that he’s been diagnosed with multiple brain problems, which he traces back to his days in football.

“When my results came back, I had dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” Gastineau said, via Seth Walder of the New York Daily News. “Those were three things that I have.”

The 60-year-old Gastinueau traced the illnesses back to his days in the NFL. He played 10 seasons with the Jets, registering 74.0 sacks, with 41.0 of those coming in 1983 and 1984. He also boxed professionally after leaving football.

And while he said football was the beginning of his problems (“I led with my head all the time,” he said) he also wanted to use his plight to educate others.

“You know, my first reaction was that I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it,” Gastineau said. “My second reaction was how can I help other people coming in to the NFL? That’s what it’s all about. . . .

“I know that there’s techniques out there that if I would have had ‘em, if I would have had the techniques out there that I’m teaching now to these kids, I know I would not be probably, . . . I know I wouldn’t have the results that I have now. ‘

Gastineau serves as an ambassador for USA Football, and said the Heads Up Football program was a way to protect future generations of players.

“I don’t want [my diagnosis] to over shadow the Heads Up Program,” he said. “I want it to be a warning to mothers and fathers to be able to put their kids in the safe places to be able to carry on a team sports that I think is going to be way more beneficial for them than if they didn’t have it in their lives.”

While Gastineau’s diagnosis is obviously terrible news, he wants to use his platform to make the game safer. Whether the moms who hear his message are able to separate the former from the latter might be a more difficult sell.

His sack dance was ridiculous. But Gastineau was a good player. I ran into him once at Giants stadium before a game in 2004. He was very cool with the fans, signing autographs and very conversational. Didn't detect much ego at all.

Hope his illnesses don't hold him back.

He was the beginning along with LT and Bruce Smith of the importance of having a dominant pass rusher.

Definitely a sad day

How about Deacon jones, Alan page, Philbin, Elliott etc etc.....he was in the middle

In my book he was a good player but a loser...Klecko was a winner not Gas

But that being said I pray for him

I dont slurrrrrrr my words too much. But hey, when I played I shook my junk in QB's faces after I knocked them out. No one ever seen Defensive player celebrating back then & it caused a lot of fights. Today its common back then I was first to do it. Called it a sack dance & I mean literal shaking my sack in QB face. Great times on the Sack Exchange! Lot of QB's seen all 4 of our sacks dancing in their faces. PS I'm not really Gasman except in honoring his play & name in here. Both Gas-Klec-Lions-Salam are great Jets that brought honor & heart to Jets ORG

Never a fan of Mark, thought he was a overrated because he was going for a sack on every play while the opposition just ran the ball at the position he vacated to get around the tackle while Klecko was being double and triple teamed but I did hear that he was good with the fans personally

However, if this condition is due to head-hits, he is in the this shape now because he was there to entertain us. Always sad to see.

BTW: Gastineau trivia

What HOF offensive lineman attacked him in the middle of a sack dance because he thought it was inappropriate?

Yea those guys were good and I was alive to watch all of them but Gastineau, LT, Smith, and Reggie White made it a science and part of the scheme IMHO

Lombardi would run at deacon for a good part of three quarters to slow him down just so they could pass in the 4th qtr. I think there was some science in those days also. Some say Deacon had 25 sacks in a year that would make LT a school kid

Now IMO I thing klecko was as good or better then Gas as a pas rusher as he played inside some of those years.

Now lets look at Elliott (no not Jumbo) Big Bad John......In 1970 I think he had 16 sacks in 14 games as a tackle on a bad line. Not a DE, or LB a inside tackle....Injuries did him in but I would love to have seen Elliott & Klecko as DT,s together.....How about with Philbin & Biggs ......lets put Gas in as the 3rd down rusher
