I'm not saying Marrone is terrible. I'm saying possibly hiring a coach quickly, with many candidates, before a GM is typical #Jets insanity 45m

I want the #Jets to interview everyone, not jump at a coach who went .500 at Syracuse and 15-17 with the Bills. 48m

If I were the Terry and Kim Pegula, I wouldn't have given Marrone an extension either. 40m

Would be a certain irony in Marrone drafting another FSU QB as Jets head coach, I suppose. Marrone was not a Geno Smith guy at all in 2013 36m

Marrone has a heck of an agent. To quit and still get your $4 million salary for the coming year is quite a nice loophole. Good agent. 33m

If Jets do hire Doug Marrone, he would be their first head coach with an offensive background since ... wait for it ... Rich Kotite in 1996. 31m

Marrone getting $4M in opt out doesn't matter. Good on his agent for negotiating it. I do however have questions about him as a coach. #Jets 29m

The best part of Marrone's Bills teams were the defense the last two years, which wasn't his responsibility. Offense was not good. 25m

I saw a headline, "Jets to make run at Marrone." I personally think that's a little strong. He should get an interview like other candidates 23m

If he brings Hackett with him I won't be pleased. But he was smart enough to hire Schwartz and Pettine which is a good sign. 23m

It's not like a Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh or Bill Parcells-type just sprung free. 22m

Don't assume this is a done deal. Marrone is just another candidate right now. Trust Casserly and Wolf and let process play out. #Jets 20m

#Jets would be wise to treat Marrone as just another coach. Rushing to hire him because he's from the Bronx and went 9-7 is rash. 21m

Doug Marrone? Are the Jets out of their minds? If this is true they're hopeless. 19m

If Marrone is really a candidate for the Jets then they should roll the red carpet for Greg Schiano. Better coach. 12m

Hearing that Jets new consultant Charley Casserly is a Doug Marrone supporter.

Why Marrone left his job with the Bills

So why would Doug Marrone do it?

Why would he walk away from his head-coaching job with the Buffalo Bills?

Here are a couple of major reasons, gathered during a wild New Year's Eve of making phone calls and texting in the wake of Marrone's decision to exercise his right to opt out of his contract with the Bills.

A big one was the uncertainty over who the Bills would bring in to oversee their football operation, which is something team owners Terry and Kim Pegula plan to do in the near future.

Marrone apparently was happy with the organizational structure that had him reporting directly to ownership. According to NFL sources, he did not like the idea of having another layer separating him from the owners, especially without knowing that person's philosophy. And this apparently applies to the man frequently mentioned for that role, Bill Polian, even though the former Bills general manager thinks highly of Marrone as a coach.

Another factor was Marrone's relationship with the local media. He was said to be upset with what he saw as constant criticism and a general lack of support. He was particularly infuriated by the questions raised about whether he should remain as the Bills' coach after the team recorded one of the biggest victories in franchise history against Green Bay.
