Marshall: First Jet WR to have 3 straight 100 yard receiving games since 1988

According to ESPN, Marshall had his third straight game with 100 receiving yards or more, which is the first time a Jets receiver did that since 1988.

He's the best we've had since Keyshawn. Some would say, he's better than Keyshawn. I finally get to see what a true #1 receiver looks like.

Marshall has played with strong armed QB's in the past. Projecting his current #'s forward (always a mistake) he would have a career year. 120 receptions, 1,600 yards, 12 TD's

Somebody must be doing something right to get him the ball so far.

Besides last weeks game where really you could say he cost us that game with the dumb sh*t lateral that he tried, he's been nothing short of awesome. Besides, Chris Ivory this guy is a f*cking animal. His height and range makes him nothing short of a super star. This guy is ALWAYS double teamed and yet he's still open. I don't know how many times I've seen Ryan Fitzpatrick throw to him when he has a safety over the top or two corners defending him and yet he seems to always catch the ball.

I loved Keyshawn myself, but I do believe Brandon Marshall is better. The best WR this organization has ever seen. If we had a truly good QB in town, I would be convinced that we are ready to compete for it all.

Correction.
The best WR the Jets have ever had was Don Maynard, followed by the all-too-short career of Al Toon.
And to think Maynard was actually an NFL reject from the NYG who had to play in Hamilton for a year before getting a shot with the newly formed Titans in 1960.
Thank goodness Sammy Baugh knew a quality WR when he saw one & made Maynard the first - EVER - New York Titans player.

But Keyshawn Won a superbowl with a stop gap QB like Brad Johnson. Why can't we with Fitzpatrick? In this league you don't need an elite QB to win it all. What you truly need is a dominant Defense, Time consuming Run Game and play makers at WR, in which we have.

The only WRs I remember that were compatible to BM as a Jet were Keyshawn, Al Toon and Braylon and I've been a Jets die-hard since 82. None of these guys were better then BM. Toon could have been maybe, if it wasn't for his neck injury cutting his career short.

BM has HOFer written all over him and hopefully he plays 4-5 solid years for us and goes in as a Jet. In this case, he'll be the best Jet WR of all time IMO and the only HOF WR (if I'm correct). Wesley Walker was a great Jet and excellent WR but he ain't no Brandon Marshall and he isn't a HOFer.

Seriously?
No love for Maynard?
The guy is in the HoF, fer kreist sakes, and NOT because his QB was some guy that liked wearing pantyhose and fur coats.

I may be a johnny-cums-sooner as a Jets fan but even HYATT™ knows enough about Maynard to appreciate just how special he was, in an era where DBs raped WRs regularly and got paid for the crime.

Different times indeed... for his time, he was special! https://search.yahoo.com/search;_yl...hc3Q-?p=don+maynard+highlights&fr=yfp-t-667-s

Oh yeah, I figured I was forgetting someone but even Maynard wasn't no BM. Guess that's a matter of opinion. He is a HOFer and I will not take that from him.

maynard was the best i am to young to have seen him but watch some of the old jets games guy was always open even when he was being double teamed prob the best route runner the jets have ever had.

toon was great for us but not a great route runner he had size and speed and o'brien just had to bomb them

walker more of a possesion wr ran good routes in the 80's not sure he would translate to games of today to slow.

keyshawn's size was his only strength BM way better

so for my money BM is prob the best so far we have had since maynard

One of the biggest contributors to the New York Jets' 3-1 start is wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who has 30 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns.

Five things you need to know about his fast start:

1. Yes, it's a small sample size, but he'll break some longstanding team records if he somehow manages to maintain his current pace. His reception total projects to 120, which would shatter the mark held by Al Toon (93 in 1988). As for yardage, he's on a 1,600-yard pace, which would eclipse a record that has stood for nearly a half-century -- Don Maynard's 1,434 yards in 1967. Barring injury, Marshall is a safe bet to become the Jets' first 1,000-yard receiver since Jerricho Cotchery in 2007.

2. Marshall has been a high-volume receiver throughout his career, so there were questions before the season about how he'd react to fewer opportunities in a balanced offense. It hasn't been an issue because, even though they've been fairly balanced between the run and pass, Marshall is being fed his usual diet of balls. He's averaging nearly 11 targets per game, better than his career average prior to this season (9.5). How is this happening? They've all but eliminated the tight end from the offense and they don't throw much to the backs, gearing everything to Marshall and Eric Decker.

3. Marshall has helped the Jets become a good red-zone team. A year ago, they had the worst red-zone efficiency in the league. Now they're up to fifth, scoring a touchdown on 73 percent of their drives inside the 20. At 6-foot-4, his size and catching radius have been huge help toRyan Fitzpatrick, who doesn't have to be perfect with his throws. Marshall has three red-zone touchdown catches, including two in tight coverage. The other touchdown came on a play in which he used his power, carrying two defenders into the end zone.

4. The Jets have altered Marshall's role slightly. With the Chicago Bears last season, a fair amount of his production came when he was lined up in the slot. For the most part, the Jets have deployed him on the outside. In fact, 25 of his 30 receptions have come from wide left or wide right, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He frequently draws two defenders, creating single coverage for others, namely Decker. Truth be told, they should doing a better job of exploiting this, but no one other than Decker is benefitting.

5. Eyebrows were raised last spring, when the Jets sweetened Marshall's contract, following through on a promise they made during trade talks. As a result, he's making a total of $18.5 million this year and next, a $2.7 million raise from his pre-existing contract. So far, it's money well spent. Not only is he producing on the field, but he has distanced himself from his reputation as a locker-room problem.

CORRECTION.

Brandon Marshall is EASILY a better WR than Don Maynard ever was. His career statistics will easily reflect that. Brandon Marshall will EASILY surpass all of Don Maynard's statistics likely THIS season. Yet, Marshall is only in his 10th season as a pro. Don Maynard took 15 years to accumulate numbers that rival Marshall's in only 10 seasons.

The comparison is absurd. Brandon Marshall is head and shoulders better than Don Maynard ever was.

Some interesting information about Brandon Marshall thus far:

1) His 13.3 yard average per catch is the highest he's had since his rookie season in 2006.

2) His 100 Yards per game average is the highest in his career.

3) He has 30 receptions so far this season. Projected out that translates to 120 catches for the season. That would be his highest total ever. 2 more receptions than his career high of 118 in 2012.

Is it possible that Brandon Marshall has better chemistry with Ryan Fitzpatrick than he ever had with Jay Cutler? This is a small sample of games, but it appears that way early on.

Yep, that's exactly what it appears to be. The interesting stat there is the 13.3 per catch average.

Sorry then, we'll have to agree to disagree.
BM benefits from a much more wide-open offensive style than Maynard did.
Relaxed defensive contact rules, (which were put in place in 1978 and enforcement began in 1979 - SIX YEARS after Maynard retired), have allowed a strong Marshall to out-muscle defenders and get away with a lot more contact penalties than Maynard ever got the benefit of.

Let's do a little stats comparison, keeping in mind the tougher job Maynard had.
In the first 9 years of their respective careers;
Maynard (1958-1967) 68 TDs.
Marshall (2006-2014) 65 TDs.
BM will need an additional 10 TDs this season, (he's got 3 of the 13 needed), just to keep pace with Maynard's production through 10 seasons.

Marshall (career) averages 12.7 yards per catch. 2X he's averaged 15 or more yards per catch in 9 seasons.
Maynard (career) averaged 18.7 yards per catch, beating his own career average in 2 of those first 9 seasons and beating Marshall's 15.5 yard career best season average in EIGHT (8) of those 9 seasons.
In 15 seasons, Maynard only fell below 16.8 Y/R (rookie season), one time, with a miserable 14.6 yard average in his 3rd season.
Marchall's only topped that 14.6 yard average 2X in his career.

Maynard's best yardage total was 1,434 yards in 1967, on 71 receptions.
Marshall HAS beaten that number, ONCE, in 2012, with 1,508 yards (+74 yds.), but it took 118 receptions to get it done, (+41).

The total yardage nod, through 9 seasons, goes to Marshall as well - but we all know WHY that's true & it has a lot less to do with ability than the rules they played under in their respective eras.

Career longest pass reception, Maynard, 87 yards to Marshall's 75.

For all of his ability, Marshall has NEVER helped put his team into a playoff game - not once in 9 seasons.
Maynard was (3-2) in 5, including a win in SB III.

And again, I remind everyone, Maynard did not play in the tutu skirt era, he played football as a man among horrible monsters in scary outfits who bit people and poked fingers into eyeballs.

Those are just SOME of the reasons why Maynard was, and remains, the best WR the Jets have ever had - BM included - and HYATT™ personally has an ENORMOUS amount of respect for Brandon Marshall.
