Defensive Back Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama

"He's not quite on the same level of Jamal Adams when it comes to changing the entire culture of a locker room, but he is just as talented and probably more versatile."
-- AFC executive on Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick

Strengths:
  • Versatile defender with the size, athleticism, instincts and play-making skills to handle multiple roles in the defensive backfield
  • Once he locates the ball and is in position to make a play, it’s his
  • Understands his run fits and responsibilities with the ability to marry the desired amount of patience as plays develop
  • Strong initial punch allows him to challenge with mirror technique to flatten receivers at the line
  • Marriage of instincts and football intelligence highlight his feel for developing routes, limiting early separation
  • Possesses a smooth gait with the long-speed to prevent vertical separation and challenge throws over the top
  • Active and disciplined eyes efficiently work through combos and read 2-to-1 to quickly pick up his responsibilities
  • Aggressive downhill pursuer with the closing speed to cap run-after-the-catch opportunities underneath
  • Isn’t content with simply laying his hands on blockers, looking to forcefully strike and displace
  • Blend of reaction time and balance and twitch when driving rarely gives quarterbacks underneath opportunities
  • Provides special teams experience
Weaknesses
  • Propensity to deliver forceful impact on ball carriers when he has chest-up tackle opportunities lands him in trouble
  • Motor and hustle tick at an incredibly consistent level, but he’s still learning to harness both in tight confines
  • Occasionally commits his hips and feet to the release before the receivers have declared their stem
  • A handful of frustratingly dropped interceptions are found in his film
  • Smooth, methodical flow in off-man isn’t as consistent as one would hope, providing extended amounts of space
Pro comp: Tyrann Mathieu

Draft projection: Top 10

Arguably the draft’s most versatile defender, Fitzpatrick is a ready-made defensive back who can handle duties as a safety or cornerback. Fitzpatrick’s strengths check the requisite boxes for back-end NFL defenders and his weaknesses are that of consistency over skill and technique, suggesting he should crack an Opening Day starting lineup. That, in addition to his elite technical refinement and athletic profile, make it difficult to suggest he won’t hear in his name called within the draft’s first 10 selections.

A position of need, would you be okay with the Jets taking this prospect with the 6th pick?

if the jets take another safety in the first next year, the stadium deserves to be burnt to ashes. That would be absolutely unfathomable

he has the versaitlity to play corner... has the twitch for the position... arguably will be considered at Top 5 prospect the time the draft comes along...

Unless hes a legit shut down corner and a cant miss corner prospect, no thanks. We need offense.

for me I like Quentin Meeks and Kevin Tolliver in rounds two and three to fill the corner need... But this just another example of what the great expert Mel Kiper says the Jets will or should do in the draft...

as for the 6th pick there are three options:
  1. draft ER Arden Key
  2. draft RB Saquon Barkley
  3. trade the pick -- stockpile more picks

Barkley will be gone. How can anyone disagree with Kiper? We don't need offense. Our offense is a juggernaut. lets spend our top pick on defense for the 20th year in a row. Its worked so well for us. We don't need to score points to win games thankfully.

The way I look at we might have a shot at the 4th best QB prospect, OL or EDGE rusher which we need more than a CB/Safety. We need to get the OL fixed otherwise it won't matter who the QB or RB is.

we need a center but the 6th overall is way too high for Billy Price... He is rated as high second round but with the limited offensive line talent he may be selected in the back half of the first half...

with that stated if we were able to double down (two trades within the first round) stockpiling a few extra picks then taking the likes of a Billy Price from OSU then I would be on board...

have to start somewhere and there is plenty of other talent for the offensive line in the mid rounds...

We need way more than just a center. Our LT sucks. Winters is barely average.

like I said plenty of talent to fill those needs in mid rounds...

Brandon Parker North Carolina A&T would be an ideal option 6'7" 300 lb left tackle with the athleticism and technique to develop into a mainstay for us... Currently ranked 4th round b/c of school but with a good combine and pro day expect him to raise his stock to 3rd round...

We need to be looking interior as well not only Brian Winters but replacing James Carpenter, if could would trade them but it is harder nowadays to move older linemen... Wyatt Teller, Virginia Tech is one option in 5th round... We also have Ben Braden who was on the practice squad all season long... Also have restricted free agent Brent Qvale who showed some promise as an interior lineman...

But starting up front with a center who can make the proper line calls getting the rest of the lineman situated on blocking assignments is a must...

Kelvin Beachum is a right tackle pretending to play left... Ben Ijalana is a journeyman backup... Brandon Shell has potential but will never take the job 100% he will develop into the next Ben Ijalana unless he works at his stamina...

So in this draft we can fill a couple needs... But free agency has a few other pieces as well...

Agree here. Jets haven't selected in the first round for their offense since 2009, and it shows!

if Todd Bowles has any say in the selection expect Demario Davis replacement to be an option in Roquan Smith... Just saying, he loves his UGA prospects...

I can't even fathom this happening. The only reason why Mac would go corner at number 6 is because Fitzpatrick would be the BPA.

It's also going to piss off Jets fans something awful. If he does make that pick he'd be delaying, yet again, urgent needs like OL and QB. I don't believe Mac could survive if he picks Fitzpatrick and he goes on to have an Adams like season. He'd have to be much more dynamic, especially if two more franchise QB's are passed by on Mac's watch. That's the only way I see Mac surviving a risky move like that...........

No more Alabama corners...we've been down that road before with Dee Milliner. And we have bigger needs at other positions. I do believe in BPA, but I'm not convinced he's the best player available in that slot. I'd rather take the top o-lineman on the board. I would prefer to see us trade out of the spot if there isn't an offensive player worth taking there.
